GREAT read.

Pattie Smith and Selma Hayek made me laugh.

Jane Birkin was WAY ahead of her time. What she said is soooo true, and I never thought about it that way.

Iris Apfel is astute and candid. Although extreme, there is a strong element of truth is what she's saying.

And I'm still deciding whether Miuccia Prada is being deep or shallow.

Interesting link. I dislike Diana Vreeland's remarks though-"without it( style) you're nobody" ? That's incredibly judgemental to all the people who either don't know or don't care about style. I feel every person in this work is of value and not "nobody" and I don't care how famous Diana Vreeland is!

I think Jane Birken just summed up my style exactly. I like what Nina Garcia says, but it's easier said than done. And perhaps Mrs Prada's genius is that she is both deep and shallow at the same time.

I sort of agree with Iris, and think she might be saying what Diana Vreeland is saying - but in a nicer way. And that is, to have style, you have to know who you are. If you don't know who you are, then you and your style will probably be all over the place, neither here nor there.

But I say sort of, because I don't quite get what it means to know who you are. Lol!

Like how many people really understand why they do things when they do them? I mean, you know how everyone says, 'Omg, I'm turning into my parents!' Why are we always surprised?

Jane Birkin is probably most closely aligned with my own attitudes. And Isabel Marant's 'I need to have something easy that I’m not afraid to break.' That's my first thought most mornings, and when I shop: "How long would it take me to destroy this?"

Fun read!

I relate to bits and pieces of all of them. Yes, I like to start with what works for my body, like Nina Garcia says, but I don't want to be too complacent or comfortable in that definition, so I also like what Rei Kawakubo says. Pushing the comfort zone a bit is important to me to keep me interested and a little challenged, but I'm finding it a little tougher with an aging body.

ok....i've admired Isabel Marant's fashion but i think she just moved up to my fashion guru.... think most of the time when you dress in the morning, you go toward something that’s very pretty, but at the end you say, ‘Ah, no, I’m having a hard day, I need to have something easy that I’m not afraid to break.’ It’s a balance of fashion and a way of life.”

Take Patti Smith, Fran Lebowitz, Iris Apfel, Nina Garcia and Salma Hayek sayings together and you have my own personal approach of style/fashion very well covered. Funny thing, they are all women I admire not just by their styles, but also professionally and as public figures. Thinking about it, I guess this is in sync with viewing style as and extension of ones persona.

I think Diana Vreeland made a career out of saying obnoxious things . And I'm not super fond of Rei K's assessment that life is over if you are comfortable wearing the same things again and again . I'm also hoping Ms Prada's statement was a poor translation from the language she delivered it in but I have read that she can be obnoxious too . Solange is articulate and works to her strengths- I really like her style far better than sister of hers, that whatshername .

What a fun read! I'm another fan of Isabel Marant and Jane Birkin. And I think Iris Apfel is so right, until you know yourself you just want to look like everyone else.
