2023 Pantone Color of the Year

Despite what they say there, magenta is one of my most flattering colours. I will be thrilled if more of it shows up in retail. It's hard to find. A few years ago they had "radiant orchid" which was a slightly lighter version of this -- and it was weirdly difficult to find at retail. Never really did make much of a splash.

Tonally, it works with burgundy, cranberry, fuchsia (at times), orchid, and (I suppose) cooler paler pinks. It works with navy and grey. It's brilliant with mustard.

Bring it on, I say! But I won't hold my breath!

Yes! It’s a berry good color. I can’t name a fruit that looks just like it, but it’s certainly in that spectrum.

Pretty color, but wasn’t this year supposed to be periwinkle? A color I love but found almost nothing in it, so my hopes are not high for seeing much of the “color of the year” at retail. Everyone still seems to be on the pale pink, mustard, and tan kick. All colors that don’t speak to me. Bring on the lovely saturated jewel tones!

Janet: I concur with your statement regarding "the color of the year" and retail availability. Unfortunately, jewel tones have been pushed to the retail sidelines in recent years and they're overdue for a comeback.

Oh wow, not for me. I’ll stick to muted pinks. I’d like this in the garden, though. Is it a real color in nature? Some of the NYT pictures didn’t look real.

I love this color and also loved Radiant Orchid. Unfortunately, I've never noticed that these colors of the year have much impact on anything at all. I've come to think Pantone is just doing it for themselves really.

I like the color. The tone in Kate’s dress works for me, the brighter one, not so much.
The “new” color I’m seeing at events (dressy clothing) is bright and somewhere between hot pink and purple but I have no idea what it’s called. It’s similar to the bright mustard color in both brightness and intensity.

Rachylou, I don’t even know which exact one the NYT piece means; the swatch midway through the piece is a very different color than the pullover the model is wearing in the photo.

There's definitely a wide range on that article. The redder, quieter versions I like and may wear, but the brighter is way too much like Radiant Orchid.

Well, I’m not sure that I’ll actually see people IRL wearing this color, but its fun…
I think I’ll stick to an occasional pop of fuchsia, burgundy or just plan pink.

one thing i will mention, colors and color trend are not just about fashion. As someone who works in retail, but not in fashion, we follow and are very invested in color trend, and often look to car companies as trend leaders, but home decor, appliances etc are also very very invested in and influenced by color

I once read that Oscar Wilde "had a horror of magenta." Luckily for him, he died 62 years before Pantone became a company.

April, I think in Wilde's time magenta was a Victorian colour of mourning...probably only worn by rich society women. I wonder if that would have affected him?
