“Hipster” shopping haul: updated with new styled photos

NOTE: These were hastily tried on. I also do not have leggings to pair with the mini dresses yet. Might try to update with styled photos, but not sure if that will happen.

My mini “hipster” haul arrived from Maurice’s. Give me your honest awesome Fabber feedback!

1. Floral mini dress. The print and colors are fantastic. The dress shape itself is a miss. The very full, short skirt adds a lot of visual appeal width, beyond anything I feel remotely comfortable with. I also don’t have the patience to try salvaging this into a top. I think it’s a return.

2. Plaid mini shirtdress. Biggest surprise of the entire haul! I fully expected to hate this on myself. And… I love it! Great colors. Soft rayon woven fabric. It definitely needs leggings and some short booties or 70s knee high boots. (I’m just not a combat/Doc Martin boots girl, though I know that’s the current trend.) I think it’s darling. It gives me 70s vibes, which I oddly love something about.

3. Teal dolman top. I’m wondering if I need to size down on this? It’s incredibly soft and comfortable, but I feel it’s rather shapeless on me.

4. Rust knotted top. I’m not sure on this. Excellent color. Super soft and comfortable. The waist detail is great. The neckline would be infinitely better as a scoop or v-neck. I want to keep it and yet, I don’t want to settle—not even for a comfortable house top. Look how you’ve all rubbed off on me!

5. Wedge shoes. These were a gamble. I’m not sure about them. I need to try them on with jeans and maxi t-shirt dresses to see if I like them better or if they’re a miss. They are super comfortable, so that’s a bonus. I also have ZERO winter shoes at the moment. (And no, I’m not exaggerating.)

Floral dress: agree that the colors are great but the shape is a pass. (Something about the print is not sitting quite right with me either...that in-between quality that is not quite realistic and not quite watercolor floral gives me granny's couch vibes.)

Plaid tunic: keep. Can we see it with jeans or leggings and the wedge shoes?

Teal top: Color is great but I think this would be a miss even in a smaller size. I like pieces with some kind of waist definition better on you.

Rust top: this is actually my favorite piece of the whole haul! I think it's great. Color is perfect, waist detail is awesome (adds definition without constriction), and the slight boat neckline adds enough open-ness to the neckline, IMO. I even think it could be dressed up if you wanted? Keep!

Wedge shoes: definitely have potential. Put them through their paces!

Ok. I am with you on the floral dress. Pattern and colours are super for you but it would be much better as a blouse, and luckily, similar blouses do appear, so you will find your perfect version in good time.

What Sarah said re the plaid. I'd love to see it styled up. I can see you getting use from it and you enjoy it so that is a huge plus -- tends to mean high happiness factor.

What Sarah said about the teal, too. You can (and will) do better.

I like the rust top, too! Try it with your jeans.

If the shoes feel good and are walkable, I might be inclined to keep. They seem like the kind of shoe that could work really well for your lifestyle. I had a pair like this that were lined and were essentially winter sneakers a few years ago and I really enjoyed them as long as they lasted.

Floral: very good point about the print quality! It does feel like a granny couch... Too bad, as I still really love the colors.

Plaid: I will post updated photos of the plaid tunic with leggings and wedge shoes! I do really love it, and it surprises me. I don't normally gravitate towards blues. But I do love plaid/tartan. So I'm happy about it!

Teal top: I do prefer some waist definition as well; maybe I need to find a dolman top with a very defined waist. This one is going back, to my great sadness.

Rust top: OOOO! Okay! I like this feedback; I'm no opposed to keeping it; just wasn't 100% sure bout it.

Will also do some updated photos of wedge shoes! I need to just undo the tether between the two shoes and really give them a decent try-on.

Wow you really nailed your color palette with this haul! All the prints and colors look wonderful on you. That rust color is especially lovely on you.

Now on to the fits.

1 - I agree the shape of the dress is very full on the bottom, maybe if it were longer in the length that higher waistband would balance out more? If you don’t like the vibe of the full bottom I vote return.

3 - This plaid beauty is excellent on you. Lovely print and colors, good fit. I can’t wait to see you style it with leggings and maybe the wedges from photo 11? Definitely keep!

5- The teal dolman top is a great color but this top has no structure or shape to it and no details for visual interest. It looks like a nice but also very basic lounge top. I don’t think a size down will improve the lack of shape. I vote return unless you need a lounge top.

8- I like this top more than the teal one. Not only is the color great on you but the waist detail adds nice visual interest too. I vote keep!

11- This is a great looking wedge shoe with a casual sporty vibe and a lovely neutral color. If it works for your wardrobe and they are comfortable I vote keep!

Oh, Suz, you made me blush with your adorable compliment <3 Thank you for the helpful feedback! I agree with you on all of this. I do hope I can find a similar color print to the floral. I also do love the color of the teal -- which I can't believe. Blues are usually tough for me. As for the sneakers, excellent points! I actually do like something about them; they're just not my usual look, so felt kind of out there to me.

Lisa, thank you for the lovely words about my color palette! I feel I've gotten pretty comfortable with my dark autumn palette. The gamble is if the stock photos are true to life ha! The print dress I think could maybe work if it was full-length maxi? And maybe even a size smaller in the bust?? I love the colors so much, but it just has so many issues otherwise. I'll be returning it. And returning the dolman top; I could actually do with a basic lounge top, but not sure if I really want it to be this one, either.

Alright, ladies! I will style-up the plaid tunic, rust top, and wedge shoes and return with some photos of them! Hopefully tomorrow. So stay tuned!

Before reading all the comments I too decided I love the rust top the most. The shoes are good too. Looking forward to seeing the plaid styled. Yes Angie will be interesting to see it without the tie as I would wear it like that, but I am a rectangular block!

Okay, as requested... styled the tunic/mini-dress and rust shirt. I also took the new wedge sneakers out for a spin. Unfortunately, and sadly, they're going back. There is a seam inside the shoe that began rubbing a blister on each of my little toes :'(

The rust top is super comfortable!! I do really love it. It was fun to wear a more casual look. I like it with the wedge sneakers, and I want to try another pair.

Plaid mini dress. I don't have any leggings to wear under this, so I tried it with my Eloquii straight leg jeans. Not sure if I like it with the jeans?? I feel it's better belted, but then it feels a bit "pregnancy shirt" maybe worn belted with jeans?? I wonder if this is a tunic that's better worn with leggings? I did not wear this with the wedge sneakers because well, my pinky toes hurt. It's possible booties could make a difference but I'm not sure.

Angie, keeping the rust top! I took a photo of the tunic with my jeans. I think leggings or even opaque tights would be better with it?? The shoes are sadly not comfortable So... on the hunt again.

Star, the rust top is definitely the winner! Thank you for your feedback <3 I think the plaid tunic without the belt is a bit refrigerator on me! HA! So, I need leggings or some opaque tights.

Oh, I'm glad to see the rust top and jeans outfit. I was going to suggest a pendant with it--and that's what you chose to wear! I think a little longer and bolder pendant would be nice, too. (A way to create the V you're after at the neckline.) But I do think this neckline is open enough and looks terrific.

Too bad about the shoes!

I felt the same way you did about the teal top: it looks shapeless, though a really gorgeous color on you.

I actually like the floral dress on you, but reading your comments about how you felt in it, I would not urge you to keep it.

The plaid dress is great on you. I do like it with the jeans, and I agree it will be good with tights and boots, too.

Love the top and the idea of a longer/bolder pendant. I like the colors and pattern of the plaid but not unbelted and probably not with jeans. Though I guess another idea is unbutton it and wear as a duster type of thing? Just a thought.

Sharan, thank you so much!! I love the idea for a longer, bolder pendant. The rust top's fabric is very, very fine knit and I already caught it once while shopping on a bit of velcro. (Thankfully the snag pulled back into shape with a little tugging.) So, I might need to find a pendant that is snag-free and that I love. Mine have some snaggy points. (I'm never opposed to more shopping ha!) The plaid dress... I do love it but the longer I try it on and mull over it, the more I wish it was longer. (I really didn't think the shorter length would bother me, but it is.) Also, the fabric is a brushed woven rayon, and worry it will eventually pill. I'm debating to return it and find or sew something similar, but longer length. (See attached photos.) I think that would make me happier, ultimately.

Cookie and Star, I love the idea of it as a duster. I'm just not sure I would actually wear it that way? I've been thinking about it and honestly, I would prefer the dress longer. It's certainly okay as is and I can make it work. But I'm starting to find I don't want to make things work versus have them just work from the get-go. I think I might try to find or sew another tartan shirtdress in a longer length, like one of these. Though maybe not full maxi length, more midi length.

Also -- packaged up the wedge shoes for return. I really hope they take them back! Their return policy states you can return an item at any time (no time limits), except really worn or damaged items wouldn't be accepted. I'm not sure how what that means for a pair of shoes worn once. I documented that I was returning them due to a quality issue causing blisters. SO... we'll see!!

I was also wondering about the plaid tunic worn open as a topper...in fat I thought it might look nice over your jeans and rust top outfit. But if you wouldn't actually wear it that way...forget it. I agree, don't settle!

Fingers crossed on the shoe return....
