In many of life’s dressier situations, we will be seen only from the bust upwards. Standing at a podium to speak, sitting in a cafe with a friend, etc. In these situations we can focus our effort on makeup, hair, jewelry, maybe a nice collar. No need to worry too much about pants or shoes.

But there are a few situations where our whole body will be on view: standing and mingling at a gallery opening or wedding means that others can see shoes, purse, all of it. Or a young woman sitting at a bar might want her legs to look great in fabulous slacks or a short skirt. Of course, walking down the street on a normal day also means our whole bodies and all our fashion choices are visible to passersby.

What are the implications for you? For me, I realize I don’t bother with “fancy” heels anymore because my husband can’t even see them on date night (they are under the table).
