It's funny because I have a totally different take on this. Some of my children live in apartments in big cities, or cabins in the woods where the deer and rabbits devour anything that isn't protected by a cage. And my elderly parents had to give up a home with 3 gardens to move into an apartment with limited balcony space. All of them can't wait to mess around in my flower garden and vegetable patch when they come to visit, and I'm sure would be thrilled to have such an offer where they live.
Perhaps there is some climate effect. Maybe you aren't exactly in sunny southern California, but compared to Canada you might as well be... Here where the winter feels like it lasts for 8 months of the year, even the blackest-thumbed of us can't wait to dig our hands into real dirt and see green things grow once the spring finally arrives. (My fingers are getting itchy just typing this!)
