Interesting commentary about Mrs. Obama, whose birthday was yesterday. Do you really think she’s thrifty, Babe? I know she wears an occasional piece of J Crew, but I still believe she – like most first ladies – has more than her share of expensive clothes. And as far as the most American influential style-setter ever in public office (or married to a person in public office), I’d wager that this position is still held by the late Jackie O… although who knows, perhaps Michelle O will surpass her in the years to come as she hits her fashion and beauty stride.

The reason I called Michelle Obama thrifty is because I have seen photos of her wearing the same clothing and accessories more than just once. I like the way this simple act flies in the face of conspicuous consumption, and the trend towards excess and waste. It makes the first lady seem more approachable.

Our leaders are not royalty. They’re elected officials, and although they deserve respect and to be treated with appropriate dignity, they also serve as role models for all young Americans. Wearing J. Crew and jewelry she’s owned for years, and wearing the same wardrobe items more than once publicly, sends a subtle message, an example of use-what-you-have.

No one can match Jacqueline Kennedy’s exquisite sense of style. The reason I say that Mrs. Obama is so influential is that she appears in clothing most of us would actually wear. Mrs. Kennedy’s was usually photographed in suits, with coordinating or even matching hats, with gloves and purse. Or in sequinned and satin evening gowns (sometimes designed in France and then made in America). In the 60’s American woman may have worn clothing like this to church or to rare special events. In contrast, Michelle Obama was photographed last week serving food at a soup kitchen in cropped brown pants, blue shirt, green apron and purple Converse hightops.
