WIW: Sunray, my way...

Wow, a midi sunray skirt is fun but challenging to style! Without having a real waist, it was hard to find a way to make this look flattering. Enter my low contrast cropped sweater with holes in the elbows, which didn't get much love here but makes me happy. I added my studded belt to give it a RATE element and hopefully give me some waist definition.

How did I do? Be honest, please!

OK, honest: I have the same problem with midi skirts - I find them difficult to style in a modern and edgy way. I think your outfit look fine but I am not sure about this sweater shape with this skirt. I feel it should be either more cropped - finish more above your waist - or more fitted. But again - what do I know about styling midis and cropped sweaters - i don't own either at the moment!:-)
OK, I went and looked at Angie's post about cropped sweaters and it looks like you did it bu her instructions:
"When the cropped sweater is a little longer and finishes on the waistline, you’ll achieve a similar look to a tucked-in top sans the tucking. These types of cropped sweaters work best over more voluminous bottoms with a high rise. By volume I mean front pleated trousers or shorts, wide leg pants or jeans, and flared skirts. The high rise on the bottom keeps the belly covered, while the banded bottom adds structure to the ensemble."
So see, I was spot on: what do I know about cropped sweaters? Appears not too much! it means your outfit is great and my eye needs adjustment!

Why is this not wonderful! I love the idea of the sweater with holes paired with it. Perfect to get rid of the fuddy duddy element. (I like pleated skirts, too)

LOVE! Love the peekabo tough belt - I think the curved hem of the sweater gives the illusion of a smaller waist, too.

I think this outfit works. The belt and a short top is the key here for me. Also you can try a tucked in knit with a belt next time too. Keeping the top slim and short and adding waist definition with a belt is the right way to pull off this midi skirt look on lovely you.

Thanks, ladies. Sunray skirts are really tough! I think they are easier to style when there is a flat waistband and the "rays"/pleats don't go all the way up to the waist...

If I tuck into this skirt, it looks lumpy and wide. I know this look is not everyone's cup of tea, but I'm actually enjoying it and glad I found another way to wear this sweater. It is as fitted as I am comfortable wearing in a knit item.

cobaltblue, you are right, it does look like a demi-tuck!

I like everything except the shoes which are your personal style so no judgement there. Love the color combo, belt makes it. Love the skirt. Way to overcome the challenge!

I like it in pic #1 but when you hold it out like in #2 I can see why it's a challenge. With the dark colors I can't make out the details of this on my monitor but it seems like doing this with a boxy, cropped sweater on top and hitching the skirt and belt up so it's fairly high on your torso might help? In a sense this is what it looks like, but I think that's a long top with a half tuck? Maybe something boxier and cropped with emphasize the silhouette I see and like in pic #1? Or maybe I'm full of it! LOL...At any rate, it's a lovely skirt but I see why it's difficult to style for you.

Jeneva, this is a cropped sweater with a curved hem so it looks like a half tuck. I have a cami underneath so as not to flash belly. I fanned the skirt out to show the sunray style but on its own picture 1 is more accurate.

I would love to see how others have styled this kind of skirt (a couple of us have posted - anyone else have one?)...

I just got one, Una, in lipstick red! It is a true midi and has pleats all the way to the waistband, so I know exactly what you are talking about re. the bulkiness thing. I got it off of Etsy and it was very cheap, so I thought I would try it out and have a bit of low-risk fun.

I was thinking I would wear it with this turquoise crewneck sweater I just got, but it's just too bulky through the hips to do that. After trying some different things, I decided that paired with one of my fitted, slightly-short trusty black jackets, with a slim-fitting blouse tucked underneath, was the way to go. When in doubt, I head for the black jacket :)!

The waistband is an issue for me because if there's any belly pooch (as there is in my case) it just emphasizes that. So a belt was the only was to smooth things out.

I really wanted one in red or grey so I could pair with black jackets, but this was under $5 so I figured I'd start with black.

Hi there, I'm new, thought I'd drop in to say that I think your outfit looks great. I love the navy and black, the shape of the top looks perfect and the belt is inspired - it's just a really cool look. I'd wear it without hesitation, except maybe change the shoes to my new ankle boots with buckles and stack heel, which are currently looking for a midi skirt to pair up with. Love it!
