WIW: Slouchy Trousers (a.k.a. it's not easy being different)

It’s very chilly here today – a perfect day to bring out my slouchy trousers back from hemming. I never would have thought in a million years that I would buy trousers like this, let alone feel really good in them. I love this outfit and have already thought of several ways to wear these trousers. But for their maiden voyage, I thought I’d stick with the original outfit. So wearing my magenta blazer, silk blend taupe/cream/pink tee, taupe silk slouchy trousers, Boutique 9 peep toe booties and my dark brown leather Brighton handbag. For jewelry, my Michael Kors mesh gold bangle.

I work in a pretty conservative office and “out of the box” dressing is definitely NOT the norm here. Now people have been slowly getting used to me dressing differently in the last year but to say this outfit has been met with sidelong glances and unflattering comments is a bit of an understatement. However, as Angie has pointed out, you need to develop a thick skin if you’re going to put yourself out there with your style. So to all those naysayers in my general vicinity, I’m telling you I FEEL GREAT!!!

So how does this work to your eyes? I know the slouchy trousers look is not everyone’s cuppa and I’m ok with that. As always, all comments/suggestions welcome.

I think this outfit works very well. Although the pieces may be more daring than what your office is used to, it still looks pulled-together and office-appropriate. I'm sorry it was met with disapproving looks or comments, but that seems to be their issue and not yours because you look great!

I agree -- this outfit is a TEN!!!

And I also agree that to my eye, it is far from the most adventurous look you've shown us lately. It surprises me that this is the one to draw a lot of negative attention, because I think it looks utterly business-casualpropriate! Must be the shape of the trousers combined with the bright jacket, I guess.

I pity the fools who can't appreciate your fabness.

This is pure lovely, Shannon! And I'm sorry, unless there's something we're not seeing in the pictures, like the word "PRINCESS" across your backside, then I don't see anything particularly glaring about this outfit that would cause someone to look askance. Are you sure these are unadmiring looks? Are you getting wretched comments? I know you don't want to dwell on those - just making sure you're interpreting them right!

I agree with bj1111 that at least here, this would be quite a conservative look. Maybe it's because people are still wearing slouchy pants from the first go-around. I see only a fun, professional, office-appropriate look!

slouchy trousers are not an easy look. and for those of us not 6ft tall and uber slim its even more of a challenge. but we can do it with panache and style like you've shown us today TS.Sure for me a loose tunic and tight straight jeans will always make me look thinner and taller ( and you have your own go to silhoeuette for that willowy look TS: in your black skirt) but you know what all women of every size,shape, height have thr right to experiment with fashion and under Angie's tutelage we ar learning to do it right. You are doing it 'perfecto' in this wiw example. Way to go you gorgeous gal!!

MaryK/Una - I think it's definitely the slouchy trousers and no other part of the outfit that's causing some pause with some folks. Where I live, it's a little slower to catch up to the style trends so literally, I have not seen another single person wearing slouchy trousers - at work or outside of work. I think it's just different. The looks I may be misinterpreting, but believe me, some of the comments are quite obvious!

You know what though? Months ago I would have cringed, now I'm ok with it. Not everything is everyone's "cuppa" (as Angie would say). I'm digging the outfit and it seems to be getting some love here and that's enough for me!

This feels pretty conservative to me, too - if you ever need to feel more conventional, you can come to work with me, ok? With the long blazer covering a lot of the pleats, the trousers look mostly like straight-legs to my eye, so you must have really conservative coworkers... oh well, sign them up for the desensitization program with my DH!

I am with Mary K - in both loving it and not understanding why it gets negative comments. For sure it is a leap from skinnies but I would not think that skinnies is a uniform in your office, isn't it?
BTW, did all those negative comments come from the same co-worker you had issues before? If so that would explain it...
I really love these trousers on you - wear them proudly. Maybe I will join you some day too!

What a perfect outfit, I love the taupe of the trousers with the red of the jacket. Those are great colors to combine. And the more I see those shoes...the more tempted i get! Are you suuuure they are toe friendly comfy?

That jacket is an amazingly good color for you! I know we all want to focus on the trousers but really, the magenta jacket is a star.
Trousers are perfect at that length (Wonder Woman strikes again!) and the combo is dead on. I love it and more than that, love that you are confident and happy with it.

Dianthus - the hemming just makes the pants hang/drape perfectly, doesn't it?I'm soooooo glad you talked me into trying these on - thank you!

Jayne - I love these shoes and they are indeed toe comfy but I'm still having some issues with the elastic at the heel so am taking them to my cobbler to see what he can do. Other than that, they are very comfortable.

Christieanne - thanks for the magenta jacket love! And if Wonder Woman ever retires, I'm doomed!

It looks gorgeous! I love that color combo. It is absolutely lovely and even you look great in the slouchies! Those Boutique 9 are just perfect with the pants and make your legs look really long!

yup, angie, it seems conservative in the context of other outfits shannon and others have posted. to my eye this is a grey pant, colored blazer, blouse combo that i see all the time. i agree that the shape of the trouser is fashion forward, but to me, the package tones down the super edgy aspect of the pant shape.

I love this so much I can barely stand it! The bright pink blazer totally makes this for me. I am SO filing this away as slouchy-pant copycat inspiration for when I get mine hemmed up.

This looks great, Shannon, and I agree that it does seem more conservative than some of your other outfits.

I bet they'll stop noticing after a while, by the way... at this point, nobody in my lab bats an eyelash at the weird things I wear (weird compared to them, anyway). The only time people noticed was when I wore something very conservative, buttoned-up, and classic, and then I got lots of "what's the occasion?" comments. Go figure.

Wow! Some of you and I are not on the same wavelength about what constitutes "conservative". Apart from the handbag - this is not a conservative outfit to my eye. Fashion forward shiny trousers and peep toe booties, graphic tee, classic blazer in a bright with fun lining. Throw in the statement hair and specs as the cherry on top. Ladies!!! - what are you smoking???

Bootcut trousers or plain pencil skirt, classic pumps, knitted mock wrap top (or the like) is what I would call the more conservative side of Shannon's amazing sense of style. By NO means unstylish outfits, but more conservative than this ensemble.

Don't mean to talk about you in third person Shannon (*blowing you a kiss*!)

Regardless of whether it is conservative or daring, it is a gorgeous outfit. I am really glad you took the chance and tried the pants and that you decided to go back for them at the end of the evening.
