WIW: Saturday Dress-up Again (pic heavy)

Tomorrow is my birthday, and I decided that I'd like to dress a bit 'special' for church (which is quite casual for us). So I think I'll wear either lace or a dress.

The complicating factor: even though it's wonderful outside today for taking pictures, tomorrow's high is 30 degrees (78 today, gotta love the midwest!). That means that any dress will have leggings, and need a layer over them too probably.

What's your vote for what I should wear?

#1-6, Flower dress, various toppers (green cardi, aqua sweater, boyfriend cardi and cascading cardi)
#7-11 Snake print dress, various toppers
#12 red lace (with my head cut off) with my newly-lengthened black slacks.
#13 blue maxi-dress with jean jacket
#14 plum lace with the same black slacks.

Happy early birthday!!!

I like #9 best out of these combinations. I also like #1 if you wear black hose instead of the skinny pants. But that could be too cold to wear tomorrow..No?

I do think the jean jacket would work with the snake-skin. And I just remembered that I have another black cardi - the same size and shape as the green one in #1. I feel like the snake-skin would benefit from a pop of color - maybe a bright necklace?

And it may not get as cold as they predict, (in which case I could wear tights with a warm slip, maybe, under whatever dress).

I like #9 if it is warm enough, and #14 if it ends up being really cold!

I am not sure if the shorter cardigan would be better with 9 or not; I guess you'll have to try it out and trust your eye.

I like the first dress, but I don't think it works with leggings. With the black jacket and a pair of riding boots, it would be great.

The second dress does work with the leggings though, although I prefer the cardigan to the jacket, myself. The dress itself is very flattering on you, and looks better on its own than the first one.

I love lace, so I like both of your lace tops, although the V-neck tank underneath is not as nice, I find. Looks a little clunky somehow. The burgundy shoes with the burgundy top is a very nice touch.

The dress in 13 just doesn't feel special to me, and that's what you're aiming for here, right?

Thanks for the help! I like the #1 dress the best, followed by the snakeskin print. So it's the leggings that make it not work...... Hmmm.. maybe I need some of those fleece-lined tights for my birthday

Do you have fleece lined tights? Those will help keep you warm without wearing leggings.

I like the dress in the first picture but not with the leggings or the heavy shoes you have on.

Yes yes yes to fleece-lined or thick Smartwool tights! They look SO much better with dresses than leggings and expand your winter wardrobe mightily... promise!

I honestly wasn't a fan of any of them other than #14 because the leggings cutting off at the ankle were so jarring to me, but I'd love to see those dresses with tights!

I couldn't get past the shoes. Do you have shoes that are more delicate to wear with dresses? I think to my eye it was the shoes and the pant length that threw me off the dresses. If these can be remedied I like the snakeskin print dress the best. Otherwise I vote plum lace top!

I would have never thought of the snakeskin with the dark brown boots - I'll try it! (And with the light boots Ceit mentioned).

I'm really surprised that you all like the snakeskin - I have always felt like black isn't a very great color for me, white is even worse, and that's all this dress is... I thought the flowered one, with a little color in it, would be better on me.

But then, I'm also realizing that my sense of my own coloring is incredibly lacking. I took 'color' pictures today to try to see whether I'm warm or cool toned, and even after pictures, I can't really tell (but I'm leaning toward thinking I'm cool, right now)

And I'm definitely getting fleece or smartwool tights. I can't believe I've lived until now without them - and I'm looking forward to wearing skirts in the winter!

I think you look great in BOTH color and neutral pallets, FWIW. For me, its' the shape, not the colors, that makes the snake print dress the winner. (-:

It is SO hard to fit into predesignated color categories. I've completely given up and just go by trial and error these days!

PS, I just have to add...has anyone told you you look like Amelia Earhart? I bet you'd look fantastic in a leather bomber jacket and scarf!

It is a good point about the shoes. I have some just like them, but I only wear them with pants. Ballet flats would work, booties would work, oxfords could work...

Ahh -- the SHAPE. I'm so not even there to consider shape of anything yet! I'm glad you pointed that out to me - someday I want to learn what shapes and silhouettes work on my body - I guess the snake-print dress shape is one of them (Even in the super gusty wind of my photos)

And yes, I have some black ballet flats. I'll wear those with the dress. And tights. No where locally has fleece tights, so I'll end up waiting to check the weather in the morning.

Your Amelia Earhart just made my evening Jeneva! I've never been told that I look like her, but I've always admired the name, Amelia (my name is Amy - and I love it when people mistake that it's short for Amelia). And I'd never wanted a leather bomber jacket before - but since joining ylf a month ago, I've decided that a moto is on my must-get-someday list. And I'd definitely wear it with a scarf just like her! (Is a bomber kind of like a moto? I guess it has a band on the bottom that a moto doesn't...)

Off to peruse Amelia Earhart for style inspiration!

My father was an RCAF fighter pilot in his younger days. I went around in his genuine bomber jacket as a teenager. :o)

Was it like this one? This is a silhouette that I definitely want to wear - long coat, skinny pants, tall boots.

(ETA: Oh wait, this one isn't a bomber jacket, is it - those are short...)

Yes, Amy, you do look like Amelia Earhart, and you have her "vibe," too, at least in pictures. Jenava hit the nail on the head! In addition the the leather coat (which is fab, by the way), you'd look great in her signature loose, pleated trousers and flowy blouse.

I like #1 and #9 (preferably with your jean jacket) best. I think mixing in brown boots would be a great idea, as would buying a pair of fleece lined tights. I just saw a legging version (no feet) at the Rack for $7.

Sorry I'm late to the party but wanted to wish you an early happy birthday. I really like the feminine shape of the dress in #8 and would vote for that with legging and taller boots if you have them of hose and whatever black shoes or pumps you have!

Thanks for the birthday wishes! Looking forward to dinner with my family, my in-laws and my parents all together!

I wore the dress in #1 to church, with two pairs of black hose (which were quite warm together - it'll tie me over until I buy a warm pair online), and black ballet flats. I took a pic, but don't have it uploaded yet.

And just wanted to say a birthday thank you to you all for your patience and help to me as I try to learn and develop my style. Before yesterday, I had no idea that wearing leggings and black socks would look at all different than wearing black opaque hose under my dress. Thanks for gently correcting my clueless-ness!

And I'm so excited to try out Amelia Earhart inspired looks! I love her 'vibe', as a pioneer in a man's world. I do that too, in a more minor way, by writing software for the steel construction industry.

Yeah, bomber jackets are short. And yes, it was a treasure, with the real gold buttons and his wings sewn on it. Apparently I was breaking some kind of law by wearing it... You had to actually be in the services to wear those buttons with the insignia on them. Or something like that. Nobody ever stopped me.

Steel construction industry, eh? Not bad...

Ooooh, that long jacket and skinnies look is to die for! I love the name Amelia as well!! And I love her tom-boy, happy-go-lucky style.

A bomber jacket is one that is short and has knit at the waist, like the one in the photo I posted.

Here are a couple more looks - she seems to favor loose silk collared blouses with silk patterned scarves or men's ties (! love it!) and either skinny or wide pants or a suit (it was the 1930's after all). In #2 that jacket looks like it might be suede? Gorgeous!

I used to have a Bomber jacket, I'm sure of it - leather with the stretch waistband and all. The leather was old and naturally distressed into lots of different shades, but in good shape. I cut it up and made it into the cutest little baby booties. I still have a few pieces of it. *sigh*. I'll start the hunt for a new one - but what I really want now, after looking at those pics, is one like her long one, like in the pic I posted.

I'm going to really really enjoy having a style muse! Thank you!
