WIW: Need help with jacket

This is a j. crew hacking jacket I got with a discount.. I love it and I'm really wanting to wear more jackets and less cardis in winter. But I have no idea how to style it for work! What goes with this color? What bottoms will work? Is the length okay? I still have time to send it back.

Here I've styled it like I would have in 1984 at a Duran Duran concert. Seriously. I may actually have worn some version of this outfit back then. Underneath is a basic black t-shirt (from the grocery store) and a Mo-like fitted black ponte skirt. Is this a hot mess? What can be done to repair it?

At the risk of sticking myself right back in 1984 at the same concert, this looks fabulous!

Love those rolled back white cuffs with the white shoes. Love your tights. Love that colour on you! Especially with the red specs.

It's funny...on my monitor that black is almost reading navy, which makes me say that navy will work with the jacket. Red for the bold. Grey. Gold...hey, isn't purple a neutral? <grin>

I love everything except the lace tights. I would do a mini-fishnet, I think.

Yes, Suz, purple is totally a neutral in my world!! I would put this jacket with just about any other bright... red, mustard, teal, aqua, orange, you name it! It would also look fab with neutrals like camel or gray or brown. (Camel! I'm swooning!) And me being me, I'd put it with a print blouse or scarf.

Considering we have two feet of snow and it's still going, I may have to change to solid tights. Blargh.

I love the way you styled it right here! This is a KILLER outfit, Una. And you are definitely on Team Minimal these days. Dare I say that this outfit is also sliding up the Polished scale.

Jeans, layering top and boots. Keep it simple.

Try it over some of your colourful sheath dresses too.

With tweed shorts?

With your leather skirt.

Angie, *phew*! I literally put this together with WWAD (What Would Angie Do?) in my head. The white in the shoes is really forcing me to think outside the box, where my judgment is not reliable.

Yes, I am aiming for Team Minimal for sure. Easier on my brain.

I bet it would look great with a leather skirt, too.

I have a question- for you or anybody who wears jackets. Are you able to wear your winter coat over it? Obviously you're in a cold climate where you need a coat!
I've never worn a lot of jackets, partly because I thought it would be hard to wear a coat in the wintertime. Do you have a coat with wide sleeves to wear over your jackets? Do you size up on your coats to accommodate them?

Parsley, great question. I do have a long down coat that can fit a jacket like this underneath - not the most comfortable arrangement, but it works well enough. As long as I have room in the shoulders to be able to drive, I'm okay.

I'm loving that jacket! I'm trying to add some color and some structured pieces to my wardrobe, and 25% off is so tempting...

Love Angie's ideas and you would knock it out of the wintry park with tweed shorts...wow, would that look good on you. Of course, the best of the best is keeping it simple as she said, with the jeans and boots, too.

I like it as-is as well, my inner 80s bias is not even affected.

For remixing, I can see it with heather gray, camel, tan/nude, denim.

I think the outfits looks really great. I would also pair the purple jacket with a medium to dark olive green and with navy or bright deep blues.

Parsley, I used the flattery line too when I first joined. Still do at times.

I would have worn this (rips in tights of course) with my 32 eye purple velvet Docs or high top Converse to a Depeche Mode concert. I like all the suggestions so far, so utlimately KEEP the jacket.

Una you can wear with jacket with ANYTHING! It ROCKS! I literally chose my college because of the purple (it was between Maize and Blue and Wildcat Purple) ... it's my absolute favorite color. I love this and it looks great on you!

I just love these simple silhouettes on you. You have a strong style and it shines through beautifully this way. I agree that the styling here is spot on...and I like the textured tights. Those, along with the shoes and bold color, add that special Una edge.

Marley, I don't know - it's what it's called on the j. crew site. Maybe it's for hacking around? Or maybe because you start hacking and coughing at the price?
