WIW: It's a cognac party!

Right now one of my favourite colour combinations is cognac and black. I have a few outfits in that combination on my Pinterest page. I find it a rich and cozy colour combo.

So today's outfit started with my black ponte knit sheath dress which I belted with one of my men's vintage belts. Then I added black tights and my cognac faux leather jacket. Deciding to go all out and make this a cognac party, I then added my cognac riding boots and my Fossil handbag which has brown and....you guessed it....more cognac!

For jewelry, I'm wearing my oversized gold watch and a gold chunky ring.

What do you think? Does it work? Too much cognac? As always, all comments/suggestions welcome.

Very nice! Thanks for being a brown and black supporter and squelching any doubt in my mind. If I'm not mistaken, your looks these days are getting more streamlined and less and less about a bunch of different things going on at once, and I like it a lot!

(I did initially picture you having friends over for cognac....)

The only thing I would change is the boots -- I think they fight a little bit with the shape of the dress. But it could just be I am used to seeing your great legs in booties with dresses

Have I already seen that jacket? Probably but it looks so perfect here! This forum has completely turned my head around about faux leather jackets. (Now I have two.) I also love black and cognac and also how the color of the belt sort of reflects the gold watch. You are just fab!

Wooo, this is really nice, too, Shannon! What a lovely rich combo. I just LOVE a good sheath dress with a jacket. It's always a winner look, and here is no exception. I love how this highlights the rich textures of the leather.

I love the cognac and black color combination. The jacket and boots look great, the only item I'm not sure about is the belt. I'm not a belt person so I could be way off base on that one.

Mochi - I do seem to be heading in a different style direction. Not sure where it's going to lead but I'm just gonna go with it!

Ceit - I think you're on to something with the boots. Although the colour works, I think the wider shaft and the height does compete with the hem of the dress a bit. But I felt like a change from booties today so what's a gal to do?

Shevia - I've had this jacket now for about two years and like you, it really changed my mind about faux leather. I think some faux versions are very well done and feel this is one of those.

Suz - I've really discovered that a black sheath dress is an absolute essential wardrobe item for me. The BR one I ordered is apparently being delivered today so I hope it fits as this one is getting a bit raggedy. If not, I might check out Jones New York Petite.

NPM - this is kind of "matchy-matchy" heaven isn't it?

Sara - is it the colour of the belt or just wearing a belt with this in general?

This looks great Shannon! I think cognac goes fab with black because its a lighter shade of brown then say, chocolate brown, which might look too close to black. Love it, you should wear this at least once a week!

This is one of my all-time favorite color combinations! I love it.

Like Ceit I wondered about the boots. How would it look with bare legs or non-black tights? To my eye black skirt/dress + black tights + non-black high boots always looks weird, although black high boots + black tights + non-black skirt/dress looks right.

The bag is VERY retro. The belt and boots become retro when paired with the bag. Hope that makes sense.

Ahhhhhhhh....I get it now....I knew the bag was retro but didn't realize it made the other elements look that way. Thanks for the explanation!

I suspect I'll never truly get rid of retro in my style

I really enjoy the way the asymmetrical opening of your jacket is showcased against the black sheath dress. Combined with the horizontal accent of your great belt just where you've buckled it, your figure is just gorgeous in this outfit. I've been lurking here for awhile, and I'm always intrigued to see what great combinations you come up with, but this is my new favorite!

Ooh, when it gets warm enough for my cognac leather jacket (I can't do them as indoor wear, so they are outerwear only) I am going to copy this!

I love cognac and black. What I'm not as crazy about is darker browns and black.

Shannon I think "retro" is a very inherent part of your style so I would be surprised if it ever disappeared completely from your outfits. For me modern classic just seems to happen, it's part of who I am and I see the same in terms "retro" for you. Of course this doesn't exclude us from other styling influences too.

Anyway this outfit is just gorgeous. There is something very attractive about the pairing of black and cognac. It's so rich and luxurious and creates a very warm and inviting vibe. I wouldn't add a thing, but if I did it would have to be a dash of red:)

Rae - that is indeed quite the compliment from you! Thanks I always tie this belt this way because it's actually much too large for me (it's a men's belt), but I like it like that.

Robinesque - my goodness, thank you so much!

Diana - I totally agree. I'm not as crazy about black with dark brown but the cognac has enough light and reddish tone to it and I think that's what makes it work.

Deborah - I suspect you're quite right and that retro will never truly leave my style. Does it count that I wore my red lipstick today?

Anna - normally I agree that a shorter jacket would be better but I actually quite like the length of this one and how it skims over my hips. Sometimes I don't want all of "that area" to be completely visible, you know? And as Mochi pointed out - shorter is harder to find for petites.
