WIW: Housecleaning in 90s inspired grunge

I graduated high school in 95. While I was a senior, Seventeen magazine came to my school and did a feature on it. I wasn't among those featured, but I thought I'd post some pics from it anyway. This is what kids in my neck of the woods dressed like in the 90s.

A lot of these looks still seem wearable to me today, which, I think is why I identify 90s grunge as a part of my style.

In fact, I'm wearing it today to clean the house and pack for moving. It's not a whole lot more casual than my normal, to be honest (maybe that should change?), but I'm super comfortable in it!

I totally remember those Seventeen high school spreads! And it's really fun to look at the pictures. The baggy jeans! The poet blouses! The overalls!

You look great! I agree, grunge is surprisingly current right now. I guess it's close enough to normcore. Although, oddly, the only comments I got IRL last week were on Grunge Day, but that might have been because it was WAY more casual than my normal.

And I totally had that poet blouse. Purchased from Miller's Outpost. Anyone remember that store?

Thanks Diana! We had a Miller & Paine in our town back then, (it might have been gone by then, not sure), but I don't remember a Miller's outpost.

Wow, that's when Seventeen still had real kids.
Great look. I did that too in the 90's, but add a wool felt cloche, just um, because.

Wow - just realized that my prom date from some year or another is on there! Gal - on the bottom right of photo #5. He was really smart, and we got along pretty well as acquaintances, but really were hardly even friends. I can't for the life of me remember why he asked me to prom, nor which prom is was. I do think I remember what I wore (peach).

But is that really what the '90s looked like, as featured in Seventeen? Is that different from the late '80s?

Rachy - I'm guessing that here in Nebraska the nineties were a lot like the late 80s. We're not especially fashion forward But yes, this is what everyone dressed like at my high school in 94-95.

This was fascinating. You nailed the look. You are about the age of my sons but they had school uniforms. I didn't see much grunge in this part of Kansas, at least not in the 90's.

We're moving to the place we've been renovating for the past six years Shevia - just a month or two from being actually really done! (We have lots of trim left to do, and two bathrooms to install, and two stairwells left to carpet and rail, then we can move.... It feels so close yet so far).

Me too BethAnn! I have to keep reminding myself that it's okay to not look better than I every have in my life - my efforts are going elsewhere, and that's what it takes at this point in life.

I'm class of 96 here. I loved grunge so much I made a point to move to Seattle for Grad school. I didn't stay there after graduating but I loved how relaxed the style was there. You look great in plaid and boyfriend jeans.
