First I have to preface this: on one of the other recent threads I listed out my purchases for the summer season, and a few hours later, realized I'd forgotten a couple of items. (That bugged me -- how could I forget? Shopping amnesia? I have been wearing this outfit, so it's not like it's languishing forgotten with tags still on). This outfit features the two items I forgot, both from AT. I have been having a love affair with AT lately -- love the fresh colors.

The blouse is a replacement piece for me. I have a very similar top from BR that is same shape (including skirt length) but in a fine gauge knit. That top is probably about 10 years old. I have treated it with tender-loving care because it is one of my favorites and has been a true wardrobe workhorse, as I have found ways to dress it up and down. But it's showing its age and as soon as I saw this AT blouse, I knew I had not only found a replacement, but an upgrade. I much prefer the silk to the knit, as it's in keeping with my style goal to aim towards Team Dressy. What's more, silk is much cooler to wear than knit -- helps keep me well ventilated when I get the hot flashes, and I can wear this on the hottest of days too. So this purchase was a no-brainer for me.

As for the skirt, I am not sure how to explain that purchase -- considering that I have a huge allergy to pink. Pink is too much associated with "cute" for me. But something about this skirt just called -- yelled -- my name. I would never wear this color in a top, but as a skirt, I figured it was worth a try. Also, I have been wanting a skirt in a bold color: all my skirts are neutral. I was on the hunt for a classic red skirt, for last couple of years. (Skirts, for me, are the most difficult item to fit).

Two pictures to show "day to night" conversion:

1) For day (in-office meeting, errand running) I wore it with the black crackled leather bag. But not with these heels. Sorry, I was in a hurry here. I actually wore with my Stuart Weitzman Giveable flats so I could run around:

2) For going straight from office and out to theater, I swapped out the ballet flats for the nude heels, and switched to the cork clutch.

QUESTION for the forum:

How else can I style this skirt? That's where I am stumped. I need some ideas, other than black or white top, or black-and-white top? If I can't get hot pink skirt to work with other wardrobe items, then I am not going to bother continuing to look for classic red. Help!

First, let me say that you look absolutely stunning. I am not sure I would be brave enough to wear such a bold color on bottom. So I applaud you! I was thinking that a navy top could work with the hot pink skirt.

Can you tuck into the skirt? It would look so fresh and pretty with a cream/white top. And you could also add your denim jacket.

Did you know that I have those SW ballet flats too? And I wore them yesterday. They are my favourite ballet flats of all time.

Angie, absolutely I can tuck the top into the skirt -- that was a requirement for purchasing so I tried it that way in the store. It does look nice that way too. But so far I've only worn it untucked because I guess to my eye that's more casual and breezy (and it's been hot here).

You have these same flats??? I LOVE these flats!! I mentioned this elsewhere but I tried them on when they first came out last fall, in emerald green velvet. Fell in love with those but at full price, and velvet, I couldn't justify it... no matter how comfortable they were. But I kept watching for sales and I never saw them go on sale. Then when they came out with this Chanel-like style in the Spring, I knew that I had to bite the bullet and pay the price, and this color combo will be far more versatile so the price will be worth it over time.

Kimlee, love your suggestion of navy! I have a long sleeve polka dot navy blouse that would work!! And also a peasant style silk blouse (long sleeve) with a paisley type cream and navy/purple top. Thanks for the inspiration! But what shoes? Hmm.... will have to experiment.

You are looking fabulous Shiny, truly. As a fellow pink skinned blond I would try the skirt with silver grey, turquoise and coral.

As a side note I would love to know how you dry your hair to achieve the volume? Are hair is similar right now but mine is lying quite flat and does not look so fab.

RoseandJean, I will try the silver grey... dubious about turquoise -- would that be too much color? And I steer clear of coral.

My hair: I'm flattered you asked, because I am not happy with my current cut. There's just something not working for me with it. I have been growing it out all summer so that I can get a different cut next time.

My hair is actually very fine -- super fine -- and thin too -- I don't have a lot of it, either. If I put it into a ponytail or bun there's not much to it at all. It curls like crazy when I allow it to air dry. It's not stick straight. If I grow it too long (shoulder length), it just droops, looks limp and thin, and has zero volume. I also can't go longer than 2 days without shampooing.

I achieve volume with the right cut -- I never go more than maybe an inch below my chin. I normally get a reverse bob (shorter in back and longer in front). What's not working for me right now is that it's more of a classic bob, without enough angle. The reverse bob gives me height at the crown -- I swear when it's done right it adds an inch to my height.

As for how I style it, I shampoo, condition, wear a turby towel for awhile, comb it out, apply a tiny bit of styling cream on the ends and NOT the roots. Then I sit around and let it air dry for about a half hour. Then I blow it dry with a large round vented brush, starting with the bottom layers and doing the top layers last. For the bottom layers I pull the hair out parallel to the floor; the top layers I pull straight up, which adds volume. I hope that makes sense -- I worked with my hairdresser over several cuts, learning how to dry it just right, because I could never quite do it right myself at home.

Then I finish up with a flat iron on the top layers to set it. I don't go too crazy with the flat iron, but I find it really helps get out the last bits of moisture, which helps control the frizz. I tend to like the tips to be straight, rather than curled towards my chin as the round brush is apt to make them, so I flat iron those too.

ETA: I also swear by highlights or color -- something about it changes the texture of my hair and makes it not-so-fine. I usually never go any lighter or darker than one or two shades... very subtle. I could easily forgo the highlights in the summer EXCEPT without any color treatment, the texture of my hair becomes impossible to work with, my hair seems more frizzy, and I do not get the same volume either.

I also have fine, very wavy hair but lots of it. I think I may need to take some weight out of my style to achieve the lift I would like.

With regards to the colour on colour, I have been addicted to colour blocking for a couple of seasons but appreciate it is not for everyone

Have I seen a picture of you? You're gorgeous!

You and I seem to have a similar body shape. I often wear black on top and bright on the bottom to balance my shoulders. I love the skirt, and can totally see it with a patterned top in a similar shape.

Alaskagirl -- yes, I had already noted we are similar shapes! That is one of my favorite features of YLF: seeing people with similar shapes and getting inspiration. I've been stalking your posts with interest. I never thought about it that way, bold color on bottom to balance out the top....

I addition to the navy, black, white and grey, there are probably a good number of prints that could work with the skirt. It is so much fun, I hope you have a ball wearing it.

Just beautiful! I haven't read the other responses, but here are some other ideas: a white button down shirt, a denim / chambray button down, a lace tee shirt. A black moto jacket. A paisley printed shirt. A flowy batwing top to de-bombshell the look. Booties to change out the footwear. Or, how about a sassy sweatshirt per Angie's suggestion today?

Love the skirt! Try it with some patterned tops, even blue or green. I don't think you have to stick to neutrals unless you want to. No doubt MaryK would have a field day with this skirt and all the color possibilities. I love Angie's idea though. So cute that you are shoe twins.

CocoLion, love your ideas!! What a great idea to wear a denim shirt with it. I can totally do that. You think I could wear this color in the fall? With denim shirt, tights and booties? Hmmm. I guess it's worth a try...or wait for spring to roll around again... this skirt will give me a nice boost on cold spring Boston days!

Paisley top: check, I've got that....cuz I adore paisley... I may try that for my next in-office day...

Flowy batwing top: LOVE this idea!! I nearly bought a super cute white and black striped batwing top at AT awhile back on sale but passed it up, not knowing what I could wear it with. Grrr. It would have been perfect with this skirt.

Jennifer, then you have a whole world of tucked tops to explore with this fab new skirt! I see this working seamlessly well into Fall with boots and fun hose. I can't remember if you still wear brown, but that will work too. As will a dark crimson red.

Everyone has given you lots of good ideas for other ways to style it. I found this inspiration picture from Atlantic-Pacific that I had saved- I thought of it when CocoLion mentioned a chambray shirt with your skirt.
