WIW: Flowy Midi & Narrow Ankle Boots - Does this work?

Well this is a bit of a departure for me in terms of silhouette. I thrifted this beautiful Nygard silk blend skirt about a month ago even though I wasn’t sure what I was going to wear with it (some things I buy based on pure gut reaction to it). When I bought this jacket last week I thought “ah ha” maybe this will work. I’ve paired it with a simple chocolate brown v-neck tank and a pair of Anne Klein chocolate brown leather narrow ankle boots. I have had these boots for years but they have held up extremely well and are very comfortable.

Can a petite apple wear a flowy midi (bordering on boho)? Does the colour palette work? Not including the jacket, are these pieces “keepers”?

As always, any and all comments/suggestions welcome.

Shannon, these are lovely pieces!

It is a bit hard to answer your questions because of the photo's angle. In other words, I'm not sure if there is any leg showing between the skirt and the boots (or how much) or whether I'm viewing the proportions of the top part correctly. Know what I mean? Would your lovely assistant be willing to take another pic, but this time crouch down on the floor a bit to take it (if she is your height or taller, I mean, she might need to get lower down).

It is a bit hard to judge the proportions. As I'm seeing it now, the outfit seems to shorten your legs... but that is probably the angle. It is a lovely skirt and you did a great job styling it!

Hi Suz - I do know exactly what you mean. I've added two pics - not sure if they help much though. It's the best we can do in my tiny office! There is no leg showing between the skirt and the boots if that helps to make a determination.

From what I can see, you nailed the look! But as Kim and Suz suggest, it's hard to accurately judge from the angle of the photo.

Hmmmmm...I'm noticing something about this outfit as the day goes on. I don't feel like "myself" in it. I love the jacket and the colour of it, but not with the brown tank - too colourless next to my face. And although I like the skirt as a piece of clothing, I don't think I like it on me. Feeling short and frumpy - I don't think this look is a winner in my eyes.

I like the bottom half - The boots offset any shortening effect of the skirt. I think the jacket is a bit too long and heavy for the look, though and the outfit doesn't seem like your vibrant colors overall.... Sorry you didn't love it, but thrilled to see your experiments!

From what I see, I also think you nailed it. The jacket would normally be long for skirts, IMO, BUT since you are leaving it open with a shorter, high-contrast top underneath, we still have a lengthened leg line to mitigate the midi length. I think the boots are perfect, because they have a nice, slim ankle!

I think it works as an outfit, but it's not my favorite on you. If you weren't feeling it, it might not fit in with where you see your style going.

I love the jacket. It would probably go with jeans and boots. You could even dye it yourself if you're not crazy about the color. If you tell me you thrifted it I will be SO jealous. I'd like to have something like that.

I think all the pieces are keepers but I don't like the jacket with the skirt. I agree with the others that it's too long and too heavy for the skirt. I'd say keep the skirt for the summer and play with it then.

I wouldn't give up on the skirt either. I just think that this style of jacket was wrong with the skirt for the reasons that others have mentioned. I think the skirt would work well on you with a shorter style jacket that created a waist or with a top that created or showed some waist definition.

This leather jacket is great and this skirt is very pretty!

I agree with others that the skirt might work better in the summer. The fabric is so light and flowy. But if it makes you feel frumpy, then maybe it should go.

It's not the skirt length that's the problem - it's the jacket length. It's too long for the skirt. A more cropped jacket will even out proportions.
