WIW: casual skirt option

The casual skirt I wore yesterday was wrinkly, and not the perfect shape for me, I thought.

So I tried a different casual skirt today. How does this one work? It's gray, which for some reason I find hard to pair with other colors - maybe because most of my tops are blue, and this gray plus blue looks like a police uniform to me....

It feels just fine - it's cool enough on a pretty warm day. I'm just not sure how many things I have to wear it with.

Love this skirt! It's a slate grey to my eye which can be hard to match but I would try orange, white and black?

Some greys are definitely hard to match. Is it bluish but not quite? And hm, you do have a preponderance of blue in your high summer capsule. What about your red hi-lo tank with it?

I think this cut is very flattering on you Amy. When in doubt mix in white or black. If you wear the blue with grey and add some white or another neutral that may cancel out the uniform look you are seeing.

I personally think it looks pretty darn good with the blue.

Another vote to add some white to the mix (for summer), or even a light dove gray for a tonal look. Would be particularly good with white+cognac, or very faded denim blue.

I like to mix gray with white, yellow or coral. The skirt looks great on you.

If you google something like "online colour scheme builder" or similar, you will find very helpful sites, where you can easily test which colour work together. You can take sample of the photo of your skirt, for the scheme base, and then try different colours and combinations with it.

I always find that sort of experimenting very helpful, when I'm stuck with colour combinations.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions! This skirt has maintained it's shape pretty well through a rather hot day (it's a bit wrinkled, but not enough that bothers me - it kind of keeps it from looking not casual.... you know how I love the RATE)

For what it's worth, this is a purple shirt with gray stitching, so I figured it would go well with the gray. I'd call this gray a true gray - not yellowish or pinkish nor really bluish either (but if it did skew one way it would be toward the bluish, I think).

I see my photo is pretty dark - I should have lightened it....

It looks fine. How is it comfort wise? I always find this shape skirt hard to make casual as it looks like a pencil skirt, especially in grey.

Yeah - I'm worried about it looking not casual enough too - it's a very business-y skirt - a gray woven fabric, with a full lining - well made, etc (It's banana republic). So really, making it a casual skirt might be a challenge. Hmm.

Your observation about the fabric and fabrication making the skirts difficult to "casualize" might be true. Sometimes I'll wear a difficult to style skirt, pant, top, whatever to the mall with a neutral counterpart and then just try tons of stuff on to gauge colors, etc. Do not be afraid to walk an item to the front of a store to check something against natural light. Even if you don't buy anything, you'll get ideas about colors that work, shapes that work etc. With lots of stores on deep summer sale right now (even thrift or consignment stores) there's bargains to be had.

This skirt look great on you. I often look on Pinterest for color schemes for hard-to-figure-out shades. You'll come up with a lot of decorating stuff, but you can apply it to outfits.
