WiW: buttondown with scarf, is this an "older" look?

I have got few button down shirts recently(BR outlet) and wanted to see how I can style it. Here is one attempt with a scarf that I knoted like a tie. I am having kind of hard time with button down shirts because I don't want to look too conservative or too matronly. The shirt is actually sort of mauvy violet color(although it looks rose in the picture). And I am wearing my bootcut jeans and flats. Cardigan and scarf from Nordstroms Rack

It doesn't read matronly to me, but then I'm a matron! Actually, I think it's super cool, and looks wonderful on you, especially with jeans; with a skirt it might feel different.

I like to pop the collars and roll the sleeves of my shirts, like Angie. It will work for you, too, with your short hair.

I like your style Victoria. The way you accessorize (bracelets, watch, glasses & belt) combined with your hairstyle makes your classic style on-trend and fab! Also the tie scarf knot reads modern and current.

(And, I don't think button downs read as "old" or "matronly" at all.)

You look great in this. I agree with Mo, maybe a little more conservative, classic, preppy. I think the combo of a button down with a classic shape cardi just gives off that vibe. Your jewelry takes this more modern. And the pattern on the scarf is bold so that also keeps it fresh I think.

I never really tuck my button downs and sometimes I leave the botton button or two open on purpose to loosen it up (and it creates a flare shape that I like). But my life is so casual, I'm often wearing flats and jeans with button downs.

I'd say decidedly not. The mix of colors, the way you've tied the scarf all prevent that.

giggle, I cannot imagine anything you wear looking matronly. You have the most awesome hair and makeup, gorgeous figure and lovely youthful face. But I struggle with button downs because i don't want to be masculine (i have no idea why) and have had more success feeling fab with Angie size pearls. I was surprised how much I liked it

I feel the scarf is not quite the right solution here. Daring though!

I don't think matronly. The color of the scarf is too vivid for matronly and the color contrast with the scarf and shirt also makes it more youthful.

I definitely don't think matronly, huh but this is one of my go to outfit combos so I am happy to think of it as classic. I agree the chunky jewelry and your fab hairstyle keep it youthful and fresh! I have been tying my smaller scarves on my handbag a lot lately as a way to wear a necklace and a scarf in an outfit. (the necklace didn't work as well on the purse...)

You look terrific, Victoria. I think you have a very strong sense of personal style that is modern, youthful and ladylike. Embrace it and trust your fashion eye! It's possible your DH reads the ladylike as "uptight," but then, he'd never get invited to the Queen's house for tea, no would he? Hee.

I like it a lot! I've worn a scarf with a button front shirt like this too I wore my long pearls like your scarf the other day, against my neck inside the collar and then draped out on the outside of my shirt. You should try it with your long pearls. Do you ever skip jewelry or pile all of your bracelets on one arm? I'm still shaking my head that you can run to the ABC store for real pearls! No, you do NOT look matronly, you look fab!

Love it! The bold colors and combo, coupled with the stacks of bracelets are a great accessorizing touch to keep it more current. I think the Polyvore outfit you linked would look good too. How about a non-blue scarf with it? There's already a lot of blue in the outfit.

I think the bright colors make it modern and fresh. I really like it and am thinking about copying you if I can find the right pieces. I am up there in age though so that may not be comforting for you.

I agree with what everyone said -- this is a classic look that doesn't read as matronly to me. I also wear my button downs/scarves like this occasionally, and it's always felt age-appropriate (I'm 29).

Not matronly! It's modern with the all the colors and the cut of sweater and jeans. You could do the same thing with scarf worn as belt and the big pearls and that would be fun.
I remember you posted a link to MaiTai's blog on scarves and although all the Hermes is a bit out of my range (ahem, yes an understatment!) I think her classic style with a bit of twist is similar to this look you wore. I have also learned a lot about scarf tying from that blog!
