WIW: A Venture Into Boho Land (Dress #4)

No matter how much I want it to be summery in Norway, temperatures dropped this week to around 15C/50-60F, and my planned dress outfit had to be modified. I came up with a very simple solution: When in doubt, wear jeans!

The dress I picked for Dress Challenge Week today is a shirt dress/tunic in linen, and I'm in fact contemplating culling it, but it has certain qualities that I like, too. It is a nice thick drapey linen, and I think the style is quite classic. It is a bit short, and also a little too boho for my regular style, but then again, maybe not? Originally I planned to wear it with brown sandals and a denim jacket. To add some punch I threw on my turquoise cuff. My messenger bag seemed very appropriate. Since the weather was too cold (cloudy&windy) for bare legs, I added my white jeans with a slight roll at the ankle. I'm working from home today and have run a few errands, too.

What do you think? Is this an outfit in line with my descriptors Playful Simple Chic Modern Classic, or is it too boho for me? How does it look with white jeans? Any and all comments you feel like sharing are very much appreciated as usual. Thanks for reading!

I hear you about the weather. It is cloudy and rainy here today and we still have heating on in the office and I had to wear my denim jacket as a topper and socks and black booties. Where is summer????
This outfit looks lovely. It has a nice Indian vibe to it.

I like this a lot! I can see what you mean by entering another style mode - this outfit is not as sharp and crisp as your usual outfits, but I like the relaxed & casual vibe and how you added turquoise for fun.

Do you have to meet all 5 of your descriptors with every look? Or can Playful and Simple work for you at times? This is unstrutured and fun.

I don't feel "qualified" to comment on whether or not this fits your style descriptor, and I suspect by the end of the day how you feel in it will help you determine that. But I can say that I love it, and think it looks great on you, both with and without the jeans. I think this would be a workhorse for someone who works at home and wants to be stylish and comfy at the same time. My fav is bare legs with the jean jacket. It would also look great with leggings.

Love it with the jeans. To play up the chic in your descriptors, perhaps a structured satchel or clutch would be fun. The cuff looks great! Your sandals don't read boho to me and "edgy" footwear would change it up also.

You are so clever to pair this with your jeans in the cold!

I like this for a casual day, Ingunn, and do think it fits your descriptor -- and without the jeans it works, too, although I can see how you are moving away from that boho look towards crisper, more classic styles. But something like this is useful in summer. Or, ugh, in what ought to be summer! (Freezing here today, too....)

I know, I can't believe it is so cold. It was 6C here last night! My poor plants don't know what to think. And then with the return of muggy next week, we are going to be roasting!

Thank you, Suz. I would probably not have worn this to work, but for a day in my home office it is quite comfortable. The dress is a couple of years old, and I can't make up my mind about it. It is convenient for Norwegian weather, which probably gives it another chance this year in my book. But the style is not a fav.

I think the problem is not how you look, which is great as usual, but that you are not really happy with the style. You certainly aren't locked into your style descriptor for every outfit but it sounds like you weren't so happy wearing this and that seems like a good reason not to!

Shevia, you are right! I am not as happy about this as with many of my usual outfits. Wearing the dress is a way to test drive it - will I keep it or not. I am surprised to learn that I like it better with the jeans than without, which I wouldn't have thought in advance. The style descriptor is a guideline, and definitely not a rule, I agree wholeheartedly.

I like this dress both ways Ingunn although it is not quite your usual style and does have a hint of boho. But I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing - sometimes it's nice to wear something a little less predictable and easy to throw on, you know? How did you feel in the outfit?

I thought I would hate it with the jeans, but surprisingly I prefer it! I guess time will tell if the dress gets a pass...

I chuckled when I read your solution concerning the modification to your dress. I adore that linen tunic/dress. I'd wear it in a heartbeat and I do like how you paired it with the lite-colored jeans. You have a good eye for these things IMO, so you know if this makes you comfortable or not. At any rate, you look superb! Always.

Thank you, Shannon! I actually feel quite good in it. I think the fact that the jeans are white makes the difference for me. I like the low contrast, and I like the texture of denim and linen together, too.

I can see why you like that dress Ingunn. The fabric looks so cool and soft (not that you needed to keep cool today, lol)! Even though it's slightly boho, I quite like it. It looks ideal for at-home wear, and before culling it, I'd consider it as a beach cover-up or even as a nightgown if you decide after today that it's not quite where you want to go with your style.

It looks great with the turquoise cuff and denim jacket, and I like it with and without the white jeans. Fab!

I actually really like this linen dress. It is a departure but not in an extreme way. I think it's hard to find good linen items that stand the test of time - and it looks great either way.

I really like this dress, and I really like it on you. As for whether you should keep it - well, that depends on whether you feel like yourself in it. But don't purge on the basis of what it _looks_ like!

I think summer is definitely the season to let a bit of boho out.

I was going to say what Mona said - this has an Indian look that totally appeals to me! In fact, it's my favorite of your combos this week, and that is saying something because all were gorgeous... I love a dress that doubles as a tunic.

I really like that dress. I see it as the classic side of boho. It looks summery enough to wear with just sandals, but the "linen" color allows you to wear it with more wintery colors as well. I think it would look great with browns or blue denim. I think it would also take well to touches of color in beads, bangles, or a vest. The green bracely looks good alone, but would also work if you invited "friends" to the color party. You could also layer a cami under it, for a touch of color at the neckline. I also envision it with neutral accessories...brown beads and bangles in various shades, maybe with some brass if you want to add metal to the mix. I also like it with the white jeans, although I'm still getting used to seeing various shades of white and cream together. It looks like a good combo to wear when the season is spring and the sun is shining, but it's not quite warm enough for too much bare skin. I can also see it with brown boots, sans tights. Maybe with an earthy colored sock scrunched a bit and peeking out the top of the boot.

In short, it's too versatile not to keep it. And it' isn't too "boho" as long as you don't add too much to it. Although there's no reason a classic dresser can't take a boho vacation every now and then.

Thank you, everyone! All your comments about the dress has made me like it more again, so it stays for this season at least. T-Rex, I'm very impressed by all your styling suggestions! Several of them really appeal to me. I think navy would be a no-brainer with it, maybe as a tank underneath and combined with dark jeans and blue Chucks. That would definitely also be a very suitable Norwegian Summer attire.

Una and Mona - a touch of India is also a very welcome addition to my wardrobe. I think I understand what you mean.

Cinnamon fern, I agree, Summer time is boho time!

Texstyle and Claire: A good quality garment is always worth taking good care of, and this one is definitely going to last. If the shape is classic enough, and I believe it is, I think I will hold on to it as long as I can renew it a little from time to time - like today, with the white jeans.

I really love this look on you, Ingunn! It's so fun. I have a few longer tunic-type dresses that I wear as tops over pants just like this. It's a chic look, IMO.
