WIW: a 'safe' combo, and leggins, try 2

#1: Dark wash jeans (Land's End) that muffin top me really badly, so I'm wearing un-buttoned with a belt. Olive top, jean jacket with a cognac belt and my brown beat up booties that I love and wear all the time. I should take the time to polish them.... The scarf is my favorite right now - it's a painted silk that I bought in Paris about this time last year.

#2-4: Another attempt at trying the 'long-over-leggins' formula. These are brown leggins, My top is white with orange leaves, but looks more pink in the photos. The boots are new-to-me (free!) And I'm considering polishing them with brown polish in an attempt to make them less yellow. Do you think it would work? (Yes, they're muddy too - I'm planning to wash them up today)

I love suggestions for improvement - help me learn this dressing-well thing!

I really love the brown leggings on you. You have very slim, long legs. I like outfit 4.

I agree with RunnerRae- those brown leggings combined with a brown top as a "column of color" (in #2 and #4) is a super flattering look for you. And the fit of the leggings is spot-on- you have great legs!

I find it tough to combine a jean jacket with jeans in a modern way (tends to veer towards the "Texas tuxedo") but I'm a newb to jean jackets so I'll let those with more jean jacket experience weigh in.

For the boots, I think the color looks fine, but color can be tough to interpret in pictures!

I absolutely LOVE #3 and #4 - the way that scarf bookends the lighter toned boots is positively brilliant and gorgeous!

Thanks for the positive feedback on the leggins - what sorts of tops work with leggins? I find this pair insanely comfy, but I don't have the top-to-bottom proportions worked out in my mind.

Tunic tops work best with leggings - something not too tight/clingy that covers your behind and crotch point. Probably something that comes to mid thigh? But I'm not expert so let's see what others say.

And now you have me thinking about jeans on jeans - In my mind it worked because the jacket was light and the jeans dark. I remember seeing the light chambray shirt with dark jeans, and thinking that it worked. Maybe that doesn't translate to a denim jacket with dark jeans.... hmmm..

Once again, thank you all so much for your input and helping me learn how to dress. You can't imagine how glad my husband is that I'm not always pestering him on what looks good anymore!

Yes, I would say a longer tunic would be better. I like mid thigh, around fingertip length if I have my hands extended. That gives sitting room

Okay, looked through my closet for things that were fingertip or mid-thigh length, and I found only this sundress. It's too cold to wear alone, so I put the brown jacket over it. In the mirror, it looked really long to me. But in the pic, I think it looks fine (I should cut off the ruffle probably). Do the proportions of this work better?

(Oh, and I'm making a face at my 4 year old, who is taking the picture)

Yes! I like this! I would probably cut off the ruffle too, but I like it with the jacket over top!

Thank you! Ruffle will be gone over my kids' nap-time today, and a new hem put in place. Unless I decide that I need a nap too.

Ooh, and I just read that you can dye leather boots with RIT dye. I could have these be any color I want! I may turn them to burgundy!

Love the pink tunic and boots! And find that pic #2 in the first post lacks what pic #4 has - bookending for the boots. There needs to be a reason for the eye to travel up and take in the whole, and that does it.

Is the bookending missing with the pink tunic, or does the lightness of the pink perform that function there?

The pink performs that function. Not tan like the boots, but it is light like the boots. So the eye goes from boots tunic and vice versa. It also "uplights" your face and hair IMO, so attention is also where it should be - your face.

Your scarf bookends with your boots because it has the boots' tone in them. If you wore brown boots they would bookend with your hair.

You have long legs with slender thighs, so you don't have to worry about a tunic being long enough to cover chunky thighs. This means you have a bit of space to play around with, and you may have a number of sweet spots. I would say tunic length for adults is the length at which teen girls like to wear their dresses. . .

You all make me smile - I've considered my 'chicken legs' a figure flaw that I should hide at all costs until joining this forum a few weeks ago. (I wore these leggings to keep warm in winter under skirts). It's fun knowing that skinny legs are 'in' now, and that I actually look okay in skinny jeans too (from a different post).

(And I realized this morning that last time skinnies were in, I was in high school. And I was already 5'8", but weighed 50 lbs. less than now. So of course I was too skinny for leggings back then. I just didn't realize that this time around, my figure actually allows it.)
