I've always loved Vanessa Redgrave's check shirt and scarf outfit in Blowup, so today I took out my check shirt and tried to put together an "ode to Blowup" outfit. The shirt and bird print scarf have a little tension that I liked--another baby step in pattern mixing. I tried on several scarves and even made my DH weigh in. He picked the one I'm wearing, which was my first choice too. He also astutely observed that the fact they don't match perfectly keeps it from being too flight attendanty. I also pulled out my vintage Coach purse, which was the first expensive purse I bought. I was 20 at the time and it was a huge splurge, but over 20 years later, it is still going strong. I was so happy to see it reincarnated recently for Coach's summer line.
Two other WIWs are a dress that I wore on Monday and a peplum skirt outfit that I wore on Tuesday. The dress has a black on grey pattern and is a wrap dress. I like it, but I think that when I had it shortened, the gal shortened it too much. Back to alterations.... I wore it with red coral and a dark teal tote. The colors didn't come through very well!
The peplum shirt was an impulse try on. It was in the room at JCrew when I went in to try another shirt. I tried it on and loved it. I originally hoped that I could wear it with my grey Dianna skinny jeans from the NAS, combining ladylike and tough. That didn't work very well, but I liked the top with the pencil skirt and dark wash jeans, so it made the cut for something fun for the late summer.
What do you think? Does the pattern mixing in the first outfit work?
