What's up, Maxi Skirt!?

After blog posts and other forum posts about maxi dresses and skirts, it is quite clear that they are not forum favorites. In any case, I decided to give one a whirl. I have feelings of steel and would much appreciate honest feedback on this ensemble. If you are in style shock, you may close this post ASAP. ;D

Belt: Anthro
Sandals: Yep, they are flat (gasp!) and gold (I like) Merona
Jewelry: MK, DY, JCrew, BR, AE, vintage

I'm not really a fan of maxi anythings, but I do like the way that you've styled the outfit. It's a great combination.

I have much love for maxis! But I think this has a lot going on with the print, belt, and shirt with pockets, buttons, and tab sleeves. Perhaps a plain, boatneck top tucked into the belt instead? Of couse, that's just my personal taste talking here so you may be quite at ease with lots of details playing together!

I may prefer a midi or knee-length myself, but the western-ish bohemian styling works with the maxi length as well, sort of recalling traditional regalia.

I love the way you styled this, Heather! I'm not a maxi-nista but I can appreciate it on others. Your combination of western and maxi with your trademark arm-candy is fab. It's a fun and different look and I love it on you. Seriously, I don't think there is anything you can't wear well. Go, Maxi, go!

I love the pattern of the skirt but I'm not sure it's flattering on you (as someone stated - you have a great figure) and it looks a bit woodstock themey with the chambray and belt. I like the idea of a more fitted modern top with this as I do like maxis for their ease of wear in the summer. I really enjoyed maxi dresses (in flowy knits) when I was 8 months pregnant in August and could not see my legs to shave them.

OK, I LOVE that top, belt and your bracelets. But the silhouette (with the ruffle pleats) and fabric pattern of the skirt is looking a little too "prairie pioneer" to me. But you are very fashion-forward and I am fashion-frumpy so take my opinion with a bucket of salt!

i love maxis and i love this look! it's pretty and relaxed and easy, great for a weekend barbeque or glass of wine on the deck type of thing, even running errands (flats!). i wish we'd looked this great wearing maxis in the '70's

just a couple of 'try it to see if you like it's - i think turning up the blouse collar would make it look a bit more sporty and modern and tie the watch in to the look as a whole. and this next one could very well just be one of my own personal bugaboos! but i'd prefer to see the shirt underneath the belt in front, under the buckle, rather than the skirt waistband....you could wear the shirt out and belt it, or untuck the shirt & fold it under to the proper length where you can 'catch it' under the belt (sounds like more of a fuss than it is).

but these are 1% type micro-quibbles, of interest to the fanatic only. Great look and thank you for posting it here!!!! steph

I love the way you styled it and have no problems with maxis but... would like to see a little bit of fullness on the bottom of the skirt, just a tinny little bit.

I'm with those who advise a simpler, fitted top. Let the skirt be the focal point. There was a time when I liked to wear maxi skirts--the ease on a hot summer day when pants are too hot. I'd like to see you make other outfits with the skirt.

You have great style and can wear many outfits that wouldn't seem to work on others.
When I first looked at the picture, my only response was, if you are fine with all of that fabric than go for it because you look great. After reading the other responses my thoughts are swayed a bit towards having a skimpier top so there isn't so much volume on volume.
I am getting a prairy vibe from the outfit but there is nothing wrong with that if that's what you are going for. I can see you sitting on a deck of a log home in Wyoming looking beautiful.

Honestly, wearing flats makes me tired by the end of the day. I only wear trainers, flops at the beach/pool, with certain jeans (maybe and when I do wear denim) or with a maxi. Team Flats is a foreign and unflattering team for me.

Celia: I found that locating the "right" maxi skirt for me was a challenge! Finding that balance of fullness is very tricky.

I neither love nor hate maxi skirts on others - that just for context. I really like the way you styled the outfit, and I personally think the shirt is the perfect top for it. The one thing I'm not fond of are the pleats in the skirt. They just add bulk and width and make the skirt pouf out. I think it would be much more flattering without the pleats. Not that I'm against pleats in general, but I think they are very tricky on a maxi skirt - it's just a lot of fabric altogether.

It is very Sundance catalog. I think I would prefer statement necklace over statement bracelets.

I agree with Antje regarding the pleats. Too much fabric can add to the hips. I do like the 'Country Mom' look on you though I haven't seen you in anything else yet. Keep stylin'!
