I had picked two potential outfits to wear to my boyfriend's daughter's play. The Pirates of Penzance Jr., done by 7th and 8th graders. At times I thought I was watching Waiting for Guffman Jr.

My bf's ex was there, very awkward. I didn't want to go too trendy, but I also wanted a touch of allure so no boyfriend/pajama/Mom/distressed jeans.

I wore the first one, we both felt it was more flattering. The second one features my Peter Som digital print upscale tee from last Spring, a prized purchase that is now officially an orphan, have worn it once. Maybe I need some new styling ideas. I think the length of it is less flattering than the Vince tunic in the first outfit.

I think both look great! I'm sure the occasion was a little fraught but I hope you felt super confident because you looked awesome!

Have you tried the Peter Som tee with light bottoms?

The tee in the second shot is gorgeous and I am quite surprised it is an orphan because it seems quite your style. It is hard to see the length in the picture but if you feel it is short cna you semituck it with your BF jeans and such? I also second MaryK's idea about trying it with lighter bottoms.

They both look great IMO. I like MaryK and Sveta's idea of lighter colored or denim bottoms for the t-shirt.

I love the peak of skin in #1- it looks so well-balanced with the colour-blocked sweater!
I like the idea of a fresh topper over your Tee in #2- if I were wearing I would feel a bit 'swamped' with the amount of fabric on the sleeves.
Perhaps it is also the dark and slim-fitting pants that make it seem a bit top-heavy in your pic?

Well you look beautiful! And, I am chuckling about your comment of watching Waiting for Gumman, (Jr.) - I loved that movie!

I saw that tee in person and it is so great - but in looking at the picture, I keep noticing how big the opening of the sleeves are, and would love to see the sleeves cut at more of an angle, so they don't cut off your arms so much - KWIM?

YLF & alluring. I agree with Marley there is something about the sleeves in #2 that need some adjustment imo - keep it though, it's lovely

I think the outfit you chose looked great! I remember the T-shirt from last year -it is very beautiful. I wonder if wearing a longer white shirt/tunic underneath it would change the proportions in a flattering way? I think maybe wide neck opening +wider sleeves needs a bit more length to balance it?

Coco, what you wore was super appropriate and chic. And I might know why you did not wear the Peter Som top! I think at the time you bought it, you LOVED that print (which i would have fallen deeply for too because I love a floral on a back ground.) But you forgot to analyze if that print would actually look good on your body. The all black recedes from the lighter and larger floral, making the floral just jump front and center.It is making you look wide. I think it is the case of 'the dress wearing the woman'. I think one way you could fix this is to wear an long open cardigan or jacket over it, which would take the print back into safer and more flattering territory. I also agree about what the others said about the sleeve openings.

If I'm wrong, just shoot me.

I've bought things that I thought would be great and useful and have gone unworn for a year. I figure it means I should move it on--but I tend to keep them anyway.

#1 looks fabulous. I think you hit just the right note with this outfit. I love the hint of skin between the boots and the hem of the pants.

#2 is fab too. I struggle to understand why the top is an orphan. It is so stunning. As per others comments I have looked at the sleeves and wonder if that if what is throwing you. I am very long sleeve or no sleeve at the moment. Would you wear it more if you have a tailor remove the sleeve? Just a thought. It's a wonderful top and looks great on you.

BTW, we had a family wedding last weekend for my neice. The parents are divorced and BIL (neice's dad) attended with his lovely new partner who met the BIL's ex for the second time. It was a little weird she said but was very thankful when someone interrupted a conversation in which the former Mrs asked for her contact number so they could keep in touch!! Not on her list of things to do I bet you handled yourself with total grace.

Denise, what you wore is slim, sleek and sexy in a very restrained way. The other top--I think it looks better on you IRL than in the picture. It moves. I remember liking it very much. It is more widening than other things you wear but you can SO afford it that it doesn't matter, at least not to me, lol. I guess I don't have anything helpful to say about it, because if you're not wearing it, you're not wearing it. I have a poor record of changing "just not wearing it" items to items that I love and reach for, no matter how good they ought to be and no matter how much other people like them.

Gorgeous looks, Denise. I think #1 was perfect and your looked subtly stunning. If that is not too much of an oxymoron.

The tee is gorgeous; I remember it from last year. I wonder if a sleeve adjustment might be all it needs to take it to super-fab.

I just thought of something. My Rodarte jersey is similarly shaped. I really like a white button down under it. Adds some much needed structure.

I agree that your outfit is #1 is both flattering and appropriate. YLF. However, don't allow the top in #2 to be an orphan because it loves you! I really like the top and I think it looks fab on you. Perhaps if you force yourself to wear it a few more times your comfort level with it will grow?

MaryK, Sveta, K -- yes, light bottoms, of course! Must try.

Lyn D., Karymk -- Topper ideas. I actually preferred this top with the moto to the other top (pictured below). But bf did not agree. I didn't think it through, but you're right, the jacket adds some structure and takes in some of the width of the top.

Marley, Caro, Suz -- Sleeves. Never thought they might be off. In fact it was the new look of the sleeve that got me hooked on this top. Maybe it just needs to be a bit shorter, scaled to fit me better?

Sharon -- I'm going to try that idea, of putting a white top or tee underneath it. Your point about the big sleeves and neckline needing balance makes sense.

MsMaven -- Good to know I'm not alone!

Deborah -- Deborah thanks for sharing the story, I had to laugh, at least my bf's ex isn't pretending to be my friend! Your idea of removing the sleeves is interesting and creative. It would give the top an entirely different look.

Adelfa -- That's good to know, that the item moves well. Hadn't thought of that. On a plus note the top does remind me of our fabulous YLF meet last September!

Anna -- Great idea, must try it with a white shirt underneath.

Echo, Shevia -- Thanks for the support. That's an interesting idea, that if I wear it more I might come to love it more. I have had things where this has occurred -- as I wore it more, I started to realize it had hidden qualities.

Rae -- A skirt, of course! Maybe I do need one of those Vince Camuto knit pencil midis after all...

I think your outfit for the show was an excellent choice. You look effortlessly stylish.
The top in the second outfit is very beautiful, without a doubt. I tried blocking the sleeves off to see how that would look and decided the sleeves are not problematic. In fact, I like the cut on you, I think it looks great. My suggestion is that the scale of the motif on the tee is too large for your dainty features. Maybe that's the reason this beautiful item has become an orphan.

I love that floral tee. You wore it when I met you so it has a special place in my heart.

I like Anna's suggestion. Have you tried semi tucking it into a pencil skirt? Or with white jeans? Great with the layered moto too.
