short waisted with a long rise and 5'9" here - I buy up a size sometimes in a petite - take them in if they're too curvy - and try to get them to stick near my hip bones - at my waist (or lack thereof!!) is always a disaster!! PS I love that skirt on you- try again!!!

Thanks for the idea, Dustt. I'll try sizing up in a petite. I love the look of skirts...so frustrating that they're so problematic for some of us.

Thanks, kellygirl! I keep trying. I suppose some are bound to be less successful than others. Glad my issues weren't as obvious in pictures as they were to me.

Carter, You gave me a good chuckle just now. Get your act together girl! But seriously, I know what you mean about the skirt going up--That is exactly why I wear dresses instead of skirts. They just are too fussy sometimes. And then the zipper always moves 90 degrees left or right too...

I always have to pull my pants up when I stand, otherwise I have no butt definition at all. Kind of like when I wear my BFs. Which is why my husband hates me in BFs!....

LOL, story of my life. It sometimes helps if I actually buy skirts a little big so they sit lower on my hips than at my waist. Pencil skirts are the worst offenders, which is a shame because I like them. But this is part of the reason most of my skirts have orphan status.

That said, I still think you look great in both outfits!

Having the waistband altered to fit your waist perfectly often prevents skirts from riding up.

You look gorgeous in #2. I love the length and fit of those pants. 11 out of 10 Carter. xo

Karen, I ordered a couple new dresses yesterday. hopefully they'll work. I do prefer the versatility of a skirt that I can wear with different tops, but I may be out of luck there.

Thanks, Janet. I'll definitely try a size up. All my skirts are orphans as well, and a I have a couple I really love...at least on the hangers.

Thanks, Angie. I'll try altering the waist. My alterations lady loves me since I'm in the process of shortening all my dress pants to wear with flats and shortening and tapering all my crops for PPL. These are just back from the tailor. So pleased I got it right!

Really love that mix on you in the second pic. so fab!
I have the same trouble with skirts and like others have said I usually size up and have them ride low on my hip which I find more comfortable anyway but then I have to take the sides in on the hip. Maybe I'll try having the waist altered some day like Angie said. I have never been about to find a denim skirt that works so maybe I give it a try on a denim skirt.

As a short-waisted petite, this happens to me all the time! I always end up tugging them down all day. I think I've phased out nearly all my skirts in favor of dresses at this point for exactly that reason.

But I think the pants here look just as nice as the skirt too!

Wear the skirt at your natural waist. That's the real trick. Angie has a blog post about it someplace. You can check the archive. It might mean some alterations to the skirt. Or it might mean searching until you find a really good fit. The Halogen seamed pencil skirt has worked for many here (although not all). But I suspect it WOULD work for your body type. Talk to Mary K about this. She is the Halogen seamed skirt QUEEN.

Another suggestion...some pencil skirts need tapering on me. I look better in a tube skirt that narrows considerably toward the bottom (like pants) because I lack substantial curves. A pencil can work, but it needs to be the perfect length and sometimes I need to get it narrowed a bit on the bottom.

Oh, tracina! I want to wear a denim skirt too. I have one. It looks really cute as long as I stand still. Maybe I'll try altering the waist on that one.

Oh Suz, I'll have to buy a midi to end up with a knee-length pencil if I wear it at my natural waist! When this one rides up, it's about 5" above my knees...not the best look for me;-) I'll try the Halogen next time I'm at Nordstrom's. They look great on MaryK.

I have a denim pencil skirt that rides up. I notice it riding up more when I have gained weight. It doesn't sit right on my thicker waist and wants to ride up to my smaller rib cage.

Here's my weird trick. I bought the Halogen pencil skirts in petite and then let down the hem as much as possible! The regular sizes are cut too wide for my frame. But the petite just barely works -- but is too short. Not too short for decency but too short for actual flattery on my proportions.

The Halogen seamed seems to work well for not-too-exaggerated hourglasses, pears, apples, and rectangles who are not TOO straight. It doesn't work as well for ITs or super exaggerated hourglasses (I think).

I actually LOVE a midi pencil (or rather, tube) skirt. It's my favourite silhouette for my own shape.

I like both these looks! I ditto the wearing skirts lower, under my belly button, to keep them in place. I'd also end up with my skirt way too high it if went to my natural waist. Hmmm, perhaps this is why 17" skirts aren't mini on me - I'm wearing them low to start with.
