Well, my favorite color is orange--- and yet as an adult I struggle the most with "what am I gonna wear this with?" to avoid looking like a pumpkin on Halloween or a Broncos fan.
My favorite color palette is all neutral --- black, navy, charcoal, warm brown, and occasionally some cream all worn together. Basically a Two Grey Hills rug!
Seriously, I've become my mother. My mom teaches elementary school and began later in life than most. When she started most of her wardrobe was black or black and white (b&w is her favorite color palette) and her students used to rave about how pretty she was when she was forced to wear the school color shirts (purple). Now she has a closet full of colorful plaids and prints. I work with a handful of women and I always get complements on the days I wear brighter colors-- personally I feel it is because they are both extremely colorful lasses with light eyes and they see me in black a lot. The BF likes me in blue, but also complements me in black and navy (he has dusty olive eyes but dark hair like me-- just a little warmer).
I like columns of black as well, and want to try a column of black with a contrasting sweater once I find the right bright chunky cardi this fall.
I have an olive coat I love, and olive shoes (another psuedo-neutral) and don't look bad in camel.
Beyond that, I find I'm happiest in the colors of SW jewelry -- turquoise and cobalt blues, peridot and malachite greens, coral and garnet reds, spiny oyster shell orange, and purple oyster shell. Generally I pair those colors with denim or black or grey, but I also don't mind mixing 2-3 darks with a light (navy, deep green, black, with turquoise).
