What on earth are these?!

Are these really culottes? O_O. They look like really long (and baggy) shorts to me.

I didn't get to try them yesterday in the store (3 yr old had to go... O_O). Not styled. Just threw them over my lounge tee. And gasped in horror. Bwahahahaha. Or is this the case of adjustment of eyes?

ETA: Found something that looks similar in Mango.

They do look too long and not voluminous enough to me. I like culottes when they fit similar to the ones I had - around knee length and looking more like a full skirt than a pencil.

I definitely like that length better, if they would look similar on you. How tall are you? They might end up looking similar to the other ones if you're petite, looking at the stock picture. Or can you just shorten the other pair?

Thanks Astrid. I am 5'4. And I think its a tad long on me (hits me mid calf) But I could wear it higher up my waist. The photo angle might be a tad skewed as well. Do you think styling this might help?

Of course, styling them might be helpful. I always try to do that before I decide whether I should keep something or not, as long as the pieces have no fit (or other) issues

I am not loving these on you, Neel. They are not flattering you like they should. They look too baggy up top and are wide and straight rather than flared.

Meek, I have a pair of winter weight culottes and the do read different to these. Tho I see a lot on line that are called culottes that look like what you have shown. I think I would refer to these as long shorts:). I am not sure about them for you. If I was going to wear them, I would want to create an edgy look, otherwise they could look a bit frumpy dumpy:). I bet you could make them work tho.

I agree with fuzzy. These look too wide at the top and straight, plus a bit too long. It sounds like these are starting to pop up in retailers lately, so I would keep looking if I were you.

I'm on the fence about the whole culotte trend. I wore them last time they were big, and loved the ease. But I'm not sure they're a good look on my hip-endowed self. Perhaps someday i'll give them a try.

I have been wondering what distinguishes long, full shorts too. I do think it is somehow that they look skirt like when you are not in motion. I like the Mango pair!

Here are mine that I wore last week. They are flowy and move as I walk. I do not think they would work as well if they were in a stiff fabric.

I'm slow to adopt, so take that FWIW, but in general I don't think these do many people any favors. So yeah, they could be a trend, but not one I'm drawn to.
With my conventional "eye" I expect culottes to have more of an A-line look. With fluid :dressy" shorts I like a shorter length--top of knee or mid-knee, something like a straight skirt.
So to me these are along the lines of "wide crops" .

Another vote to simply shorten. The actual length for your culotte sweet spot is going to be different per person. I like it best proportional to the Mango image you showed, where it ends just as your calf starts to curve back inwards to the knee.
