Yes, MsMary - the conditions at Amazon were exposed a few years back and it's not limited to the holiday season either. Ever since, I've tried to avoid shopping there (just like I haven't been into a Wal-Mart in 20 years). But it gets more and more impossible. Most notable example, my hubby and I both have some (OTC) pharmaceutical products our doctors want us to use, which we cannot find anywhere but on Amazon. There are a lot of products that have simply disappeared from local B&M stores and can only be found anymore on Amazon. I find it distressing.
What's more, I suspect that Amazon is not the only one; you'll notice that a lot of online retailers are actually using Amazon to warehouse and fulfill their orders. So it's difficult these days to know who you're really supporting when you place an online order.
I get especially frustrated because more and more petite clothes are offered "online only." Shoes are similar... it's harder and harder to shop for shoes in B&M stores. Near my house (i.e., not requiring a special trip downtown) I have exactly ONE place to buy shoes and that's bloomingdale's. There used to be more but the online trend recently helped closed down an entire shopping center. As much as I appreciate Zappo's, I worry about the impact of shipping on the environment, and they've pretty much decimated the local options, along with the help of places like DSW (and maybe it's me but I dislike the shoes there).
