To Pixie, or Not to Pixie?

It's that time... well, past that time. I've been holding off on a hair trim, because I cannot decide if I want to keep my hair at an above-the-chin bob length or go for the full pixie effect. I definitely like it best shorter than it is now, even though I initially thought this would be my perfect length.

I haven't found a picture of *exactly* what I'm envisioning, but it's kind of a combo of all of these. I've been calling it the Feral Fairy cut in my head... like a woodland pixie who escaped from a mental ward and cut off all her hair with a hunting knife (yeah, weird description, I know). So probably a longer, messier version of #1.

The other option is to just get the same as last time. #7 is from the day I got my hair cut.

My worry is that my features are not delicate enough for a proper pixie cut and that the shorter 'do would look too butch on me, especially with my tomboy style.

Thoughts?

I love the first one and even though it is a boy, the sixth one. I think you would totally rock the pixie and it would really add emphasis to the eyes.

I am a big fan of #3. I do think that a side swept angled bang is very flattering on you and would definitely make a statement if it were the longest part of your cut with the rest of your hair very short and "shattered" similar to #5

Well I'll be darned - I wonder if you'd decide to go full on short hair once you got used to this cut!

I think you would look fab in a pixie Rae but IMO, a slightly longer version, like #5. This would once again, allow you to adjust to a shorter length before considering going super short. I also think something wispy like #5 (can you tell I like #5?) would suit your hair's texture.

Just a word to the wise from someone with super short hair - you have to commit to a trim every 4-6 weeks or it loses its shape. When I pay my stylist after a trim, I book my next one right then and there - every 5 weeks, like clockwork.

Rae, I think you have a very pretty and feminine face so going very short to my mind is not an issue. My choice from the above is #5. I think it would suit your face shape, work well with your hair type and fits your style.

So, I have pretty tame hair right now, but I've been a wild hair gal in the past. I've done the pixie and loved the pixie. My rec? I'd go for a heavy, chunky version of the Vidal Sassoon 5-point cut first, but without the baby bang, on your way to pixie. Pixies are fun, but they are a shocking change unless you ramp up to them. The VS 5 point is a great step in that direction, especially if your stylist makes it a little rough and chunky. It is also a lovely mix if boyish and feminine.

(And I love #5 too! Isn't it just an exploded version of the 5-point?)

I have always wanted to work up the courage to get a pixi...I love them! You already know you have the face to pull off a short cut, so I say go for it! I love 3 myself.

I think you would look adorable, but it is a big commitment (I am currently growing mine out and it's a pain *g*). A "grown out" pixie definitely suits your style, though, and I don't think there's any danger of you looking butch.

DH actually likes short hair!

If I love the cut, I'm willing to commit to frequent trims... eventually I know I can learn to do in-between touch ups myself. I just have to get to know the cut.

K, I hear you. Hm, I will have to consider this. My first reaction is that the 5-point is exactly what I don't want... the whole sleek, mod thing does not feel right. Must consider whether #5 is a modified version - granted, I know very little about hair theory. I am quite monkey see monkey do about the whole thing.

Cindy, Franklin was quite possibly my favorite character in the whole show. So demented, lol. Yeah, I agree growing out the hair is irritating. That is part of the reason why I want to find "the" style I can stick with and maintain for a few years rather than waffling between cuts like this.

In my mind, there are far too few people who can really pull off short hair and look good, and you are one of them. Additionally, it is rare for someone to go shorter, love it, and want to go shorter still. Given these things, I think you absolutely have to go for a pixie! Despite your boots/steampunk style, I think your face and you overall are very feminine; there is zero chance in my mind of you looking "butch". I think a hybrid between #1 and #6 would be perfect.

I'm like Suz -- I have a pixie, and I am all for them, so I am a little biased. I say go for it. I think your features are plenty delicate, and you would not look butch. I speak as a pixie with androgynous style. Cool that your DH likes short hair -- so does mine, as he thinks I have a nicely shaped head.

The one thing I'd add to the mix is that I have a really good stylist who uses a razor to cut my hair, so I get trims once every ten weeks, which is liberating. I think the use of the razor is key as I have had plenty of good stylists in the past, but none who wielded a razor.

RunnerChick, that is super encouraging. My stylists is definitely a razor-wielder. When I researched people to try, I specifically asked for someone who razors.

I think the only way to know if it's going to work is to try it. Honestly, i had a a tough time with a pixie - my hair tended to be far more sleek and stubborn than I wanted, and it took a lot of work to rough it up. Plus, I felt I looked not just butch - which I wouldn't mind - but actually like a guy. The razor cut is definitely the way to go with our hair type.

Una, I actually considered pinning the first one a while back. I decided it is too short on the sides, though. Something about that feels too boyish for me - more of an Urban Prince look, I guess, since Angie and Suz both go short on the sides. I like your pin, though! It's rare to find these hair pics with a side view. I definitely get the feral fairy vibe from that one.

Another vote for #5. You have gorgeous features, and you might look good with a pixie, but you also have hair to die for, so it seems a shame to crop it really short. You have a hard time making your hair look messy, given its sleek shiny texture, so you're right, you might end up with something that looks a little butch. Which is fine if you're going for butch, but I don't think you are!

Also, keep in mind that thick hair is not ideal for pixie cuts. It'll want to pouf out. I've had a pixie twice, and while I enjoyed the look for a while, it was *such* a pain trying to get it to stay down. I woke up every morning with bedhead, and not the good kind. I'm talking rooster tails from hell.

I've had every length between a pixie and mid-back. Short hair is liberating. You have a beautiful face that is very feminine. So if you can't decide on going super short like a pixie just do something a bit longer. You can always go shorter in the future.....Great thing about hair- It most always grows back and from my experience if you do something you really hate you can usually tweak it a bit to something likable.

I think you can def try the pixie and I don't think it would be too "butch" on you. I vote for #3 or #6 for you. And after all, if you don't like it, you can always grow it back

I think, by these qualifications anyway, that you could pull it off. Yes, it's lots of trims. And it take a long time to grow out if it doesn't suit you. So something part-way there is probably a good starter choice - you can always keep going shorter
