Testing yay or nay feature

Just for fun. Might as well try out the new feature! I spotted this Pucci dress and if money were no object it would be mine RIGHT NOW. My question is: Would you spend 3 month's clothing budget on one frivolous, wear once a year type item??

(I am not there yet personally - I can't even spend one month's budget on a single item yet!)

No.. I'm a very practical type of person I invest more on the pieces I wear more (wintercoats, bags, a good pair of shoes)!

Rute, I am practical with my spending, too. But sometimes I wonder if I just went ahead and bought something expensive because I really, truly love it - despite the price - if I might have that elusive smaller wardrobe full of stuff I only love . . .

I might have been willing to that much on my wedding dress. I never did find one I truly loved, so I can't say for sure. As for a once-a-year dress, no. Because the same events come about every year, and I'd end up in the same dress for the same event every year.

Not a wear once type of item, although I have in the past with dresses I needed for an occasion that I had to go to that never looked right again. My formal and semi-formal occasions (with the exception of weddings) tend to be spaced so far apart that dresses date or no longer fit by the time I have another occasion.

That dress isn't a wear-once type item though, not at all. Heck-- you live in Florida, you could wear that baby everyday and no one would bat an eye!

I just couldn't spend 3 months salary on something I'd hardly wear. A workhorse? If I loved it, you bet! But I agree with Elly. Even if you didn't wear that all the time, more than once per year fo' sho'.

Oh no, ladies, 3 months of clothing budget - not salary!! I alotted $125 a month this year for clothing. I could NEVER spend 3 months of salary on anything!

I suppose if I wore it 3 times a year for 3 years it would be $37 cost per wear . . .

Oh , i am a Yay. This is a Pucci Print, and i think i'd make it a casual dressy staple. The kind of brunch dress. But yet again, i have tons of dresses, they are my "jeans" so i'd invest in an outstanding dress. Plus, if the occasion arises, i like to stand out in a sea of LBDs

I voted and then changed my vote to YAY, three months clothing budget is still a small amount of money in reality and every wardrobe needs a frivolous piece or four

I really want this dress which is slightly out of budget and totally impractical for my lifestyle BUT it is soooo me

I would spend $375 for a Pucci dress. You will have it for years, so it is not as frivolous as you think. I have designer things from 15 years ago that I still treasure. My velvet Ann Sui jacket comes to mind.

I voted nay mainly because you said you would only wear it once a year. It's a gorgeous dress, but I would suggest that expensive pieces should be something you expect to wear often. Unless you love it and can't live without it, in which case go for it.

I was all ready to vote YAY ( hear ye, hear ye ) , then I read the to wear once a year part. I would have to wear it more than once a year, or it would need to be less memorable so that I could wear after year and not look the same.

With that said...it is soooo you ! Would you be willing to wear it more often and not treat it in such a precious manner ?

I would be flabbergasted with myself if I actually *did* buy it! I think me saying once a year was another way of saying not necessary or frivolous. I might actually wear it more than once but you get the point It does not fill any wardrobe hole, I just really really like it!

Not for something worn once a year - and for a once in a lifetime event (like if I ever get to go to the Academy Awards again!), I think I would rent an outrageous gown!

Great dress! I voted "nay." I would spend that much on a wardrobe workhorse, but not on something that would rarely be worn. I would feel to guilty everytime I saw it in my closet.

I probably would. I am thinking of maybe a really dressy evening coat or a holiday dress.If you think about it, a formal dress is often worn less than once a year but for the right occasion if it was to die for and I knew that I would not see it again, I would.
BUT... it would have to be killer to the power of killer, not a duplicate, get unanimous YLF approval and Angie's praise. It would need to be arty, not a trend and made for my body type and coloring. That is a tall order but still a yay.

I am torn when I stop to think about it. Workhorses don't generally elicit a joyous feeling; they are more a necessity. This would bring me joy and rainbows from ear to ear LOL. But I do tend to 'save' clothes for something (I don't know what!) instead of wear them and enjoy them. Would I joyously 'save' this? Part of me really wants to buy those special things I'll treasure and the other part still says I can find a similar poly blend for $29.99. Sheesh. The BF just plunked down my entire year's clothing budget in New Orleans on a beautiful Canali suit and sportcoat. He likely won't spend more than another $100 or $200 before year's end and he will be content. Why can't I take a cue from his shopping?!?

I am one of the few, the proud, the voters of "yay"! I did recently seriously consider spending $300 on an Hermes pendant, after all. (And then again, I chickened out. But only because I think I found a decent workaround.) But in your case I voted this way because I am willing to bet you'd wear this dress much more often than once a year. It has you written all over it, and as everyone else has pointed out, you are in Florida, after all!

I am voting yea given YOUR particular situation, others enabled on a case-by-case basis.

* Although you say it's frivolous I bet you'd wear it more than once (out of guilt and/or desire!)

* You have a casual lifestyle and don't see the same people everyday. Why not make do with your existing workhorses (aka suck up the boredom of repeat wears) to have something you're really excited about wearing WHEN you wear it?

[But I hear ya. I once spent that plus a bit more on a whole "look" for a fancy wedding -- dress/shoes/accessories...on top of plane/hotel -- and went without anything new for about half the year. But I felt great and have no regrets about going with something more "wow" vs a more practical/needed LBD or something.]

Mo, the right workhorses usually elicit a joyous feeling for me because I spend FOREVER searching for them. When I finally find the right piece I am SO happy to be done with that quest! And if I can get them for a discount, that joy increases exponentially.

(But part of that is because when I make a significant financial investment in a workhorse I end up becoming paranoid that I'm going to somehow ruin the item one of the first 10 times I wear it. I still can't relax completely when wearing my AT blazer...)

I voted yay, but for me it would depend on the item. Sometimes you just need a really great dress, and they can get expensive! But I wouldn't spend that much on a top or skirt, no matter how awesome it was. A pair of shoes....definitely!

Well, I ended up getting a possible workhorse instead. Cognac boots. I wasn't even looking for them, I was browsing for a red jacket. Up popped some red boots, and then that link showed the same boots in cognac and - ta da! - they ended up in my cart.
Maybe the dream dress will not sell and be relisted. Then I can use up April, May, and June's budget on it lol!!
