Q&A about individual items, ensembles, and wardrobe

Plus-size newbie bought leggings and skinny jeans, oh my!

Despite previously swearing to myself I would never wear leggings or skinny jeans, YLF motivated me to try something new. So I did it! I bought both. I also bought a dress... and a few pairs of new shoes... and a scarf... and some other stuff. :)

I modeled my new dress, leggings and skinny jeans for my mom today and she hates all three items. She says the dress is awful on me, that it makes me look bigger and so on. My mom is my biggest fashion critic so it stings a little. Alas, I want you to be the judge.

I think my mom prefers plus size people in plain clothes. She is so used to seeing me in jeans and a shirt and this is a huge deviant.

Anyway, tell me what you think?

PS: I cropped my head off because I look disheveled after a long day!

a) MK dress with leggings and new super comfy pewter flats...

b) Same dress with skinny jeans...

I need to know if the skinny jeans are long enough. I bought the regular length but also tried on the tall... both fit okay but I decided on the regular. Let me know if I should exchange.

c) Do they scrunch enough?

And I can't forget to include Gertrude (my pup):

My questions are:
- Is my mom right that I look like a fat blob and the clothes do nothing for me?
- What should I return?
- Do the skinny jeans look funny on a fatty? And are they long enough?
- Any other input is VERY much appreciated!

Thanks! :)

You are adorable. No fatty there. Are you kidding. The mod top is killer with the leggings! I love that outfit and would wear it in a minute if I was your age.

I could not disagree more with your mother and I can't believe she would say that! You (and Gertrude) look AWESOME. The dress, the leggings, and jeans (and that cute little collar on Gertrude) are all killer in my book. I want to steal it all from you.

I hope that makes you feel a bit better!

Makes me feel much better, Maya and San! :) Every time I try something different my mom hates it. I guess I need to learn to block it out a little. Gertrude thanks you as well!

Your mother said whaaaaaaaat.:(

You look adorable...you musn't return a thing!!!

That dress with the skinnies is great. And I totally covet those flats. Your mom is totally off target here.

I think Mom's eye just needs to adjust to your fab new look. The mod dress is killer. You look great in leggings and skinnies. WTG!

i LOOVE that print! And do not think twice about the leggings. The skinnies fit great too. I'm not much help on the scrunch since I dont wear skinnies (yet) but they look fine to my eye.

As for moms..i'm pretty much the same size as you and wear leggings all the time. And even my mom wants me to be covered up in loose flowy clothes with full sleeves. I just tell myself she needs to adjust her eyes.

You look fab!

I'm thrilled to hear the positive feedback! I secretly love the dress and really wanted it to look good. I want to get Angie's thoughts and if all is good I think I'll wear the dress/leggings outfit tomorrow! Thanks!

KILLER. How does that grab you?

There is no doubt. And Gertrude looks KILLER too. Well done, Marianna! I *love* your outfits. Very, VERY fab.

You were brave and I applaud your courage to try something new. You just got the next YLF award for evolving your style in less than a week! You clever little sausage :0)

The coveted killer! I'm grinning from ear to ear. :)

I think I am finally understanding that even though my body is not where I want it to be, I can still enjoy clothing.

I'm so thankful that I found YLF! Thanks, Angie!

MC - You look great. Everything is PERFECT. Big hug to you and Gertrude.

Woo hoo i love both leggings and skinnies and the dress is gorgeous and you are NOT a fat blob x

Another vote for "don't listen to your mom." :) I hope the encouragement you've received here has convinced you that those items look great on you.

I musr admit, when I initially read your post, before I looked at the first photo, I was a little nervous, hoping that there would be something positive to say about the pictures. But in reality, there is nothing negative to say! You really do look wonderful in that dress with the leggings, and the skinnies too.

Obviously Gertrude agrees, so she is a clever little sausage as well. <G>

I also think that you look amazing! I have been struggling to interpret leggings in a current way and when I saw that dress with your leggings I thought "now that's what I am looking for!" And you don't look fat either. I seriously encourage you to not seek any more fashion critiques from your mom and if she gives them unsolicited politely tell her to stop. Her preconceived notions about what you "should" be wearing coupled with the fact that she is probably(and I of course don't know this for sure) not someone who cares much about fashion and current trends is not ever going to be helpful to you and will probably be hurtful. My mom would probably say I looked silly in leggings and a dress because she is all about the classic (and mostly boring) look. She would also say I am not dressing my age. Thats why I never ask her opinion LOL!

You look great in both outfits! The graphic print on the dress makes you look very modern and fashionable. I think I like the one with the jeans slightly better, but the longer line is my usual preference. The jeans look like the perfect length to me. As for your mom, sometimes you can't really appreciate a new style until you try it on. Perhaps her eye will adjust. If not, you'll just have to agree to disagee on this one!

MC - You look amazing. I love both outfits.

I would like to vote with everyone else and say you look fantastic!

Your mother's acting like a monster. I wouldn't solicit her advice anymore. It's just going to make you feel bad when you shouldn't.

Posted 7 months ago

Moms definitely like us the way we *are.* Change is unsettling to them, I've found. I think you look so adorable in your outfits. Bravo to you for seeing yourself with "new eyes!"

Love the dress especially with the leggings! Fantastic print.

The skinnies look perfect length with new flats - love.

Maybe your Mom is just used to being "your fashion critic"? Don't ask her opinion - bring it here or to a very good friend. You look great !

You look oh so fab! I don't think the dress makes you look 'fatter' at all. It skims nicely over your problematic areas (being an apple I suppose that'd be your tummy. I say "suppose" because I can't see anything - the dress is disguising it wonderfully!). I think you have been choosing your new purchases wisely. Your mom just needs some time to adjust to your fabulous new look, don't worry. :)

You look GREAT!!! I'm all with the others - please don't listen to your mum if these are the type of comments she gives! And I don't see a fatty blob anywhere in these pics; I hope you can stop saying things like that to yourself. I'm really glad you followed your instincts that liked these outfits, and had the courage to post them here!

I think you look fabulous! I love the skinny jeans + dress combo so much! and those flats!

As for mothers....mine saw me for the first time (post joining YLF) and couldn't believe i would even think about wearing a vest ('that emphasizes your chest wayy too much!') or sleeveless tanks ('why would you want to expose your arms when they're so fat??') She seems to think that only slim women ought to show any amount of skin and I've long ago stopped trying to change her mind...Its not easy to brush off her comments sometimes but I just try to bear in mind her fashion views aren't the same as mine....that said, just keep on doing what you're doing...i think you're developing a great eye for what suits you!

You look great!!! Keep listening to the supportive ladies on here and Angie the style goddess!

Oh my, you look fabulous in those photos. I love the dress with both the leggings and skinnies! Please please ignore your mom, she just hasn't adjusted to the changes in your style. Give her time and hopefully she'll come around.

Also, can I say Getrude's collar is fabulous!! I must pick up new collars for my two doggies Fred-BatDog (BatDog being his nickname from his large ears that he answers to) and Blackie (I was eleven when I named Blackie- I must confess I wasn't an original child).

WOW! I'm blown away! So much positive feedback, THANK YOU! I slept in a little late today, and logging into YLF and seeing this right away just made my morning! :)

I'm definitely wearing the leggings outfit today. I can't wait!

You look amazing! A wet noodle for your mom. :-(

Regarding all the comments about my mother -- she's really not being a monster, she simply wants me to look my best and she is not used to me in anything besides jeans and a t-shirt. I have never worn dresses in my life, and combine a dress with leggings and it's a complete change. I think her eye needs to adjust to the more contemporary and stylish look. My mom is also a plus size woman and she is rather stylish, but she sticks with pants and tops as well. The idea that heavier women look better in pants is *so* ingrained in her mind, it will be a hard idea to break. She really means well though! I told her that I'm keeping the dress because I love it and she has to get used to it!

Tassajara, Gertrude's collar IS fab! She has a pink one with heart shaped "diamonds" and this one which I alternate. She also has a cute wardrobe of cute little dresses and sweaters. She's way more fashionable than me.
