Outfit Posts--Gory Detail???

I'm wondering what forum members' preferences are on whether we list brands of wardrobe items. I know I prefer it. However once I was listing mine and I got embarrassed by what I had paid for the items in my outfit! I wear a lot of Target and H&M. However you will also find me in Michael Kors, Stuart Weitzman, and maybe Banana Republic (since I actually spend my big bucks on accessories).

So, dear ladies, do you want all the detail? Yay or nay?

I like the detail. I also find it super cool when bloggers and such actually list the prices of the items because then I'm like, 'Wow! So fabulous without spending a ton of money!" But yeah, with where the items are from, it allows me to discover new brands or lines, or possibly buy a piece that I really liked on someone. Really, any detail is nice. I don't particularly like just seeing an outfit picture and that's it. I like a description or something, cause then it gives me something to respond to and I connect more with the post and the person!

I don't usually list sources for my items unless someone asks - if someone does; I'm all for it

my sources are usually unexciting - thrift shop, Land's End (sorry Land's End), or just too dang old I don't remember where I got them (that is slowly changing). I have been working at home for 6 years now and live in the boonies, so have not really bought anything much in the way of new clothes in that time.

Sorry, I'm venting, but I guess I don't care about labels too much, just how the items look. I do like when a comment is made on the item itself, sizing, construction, etc, so "name dropping" would be in order there for sure! I need all the help I can get!

Glad you asked this question, and I'll be interested to hear people's responses. I used to list all the brands etc. on my WIWs but recently have stopped, I suppose in sloth rather than on purpose. I like to read other people's details, to get an idea of where they shop and if I really dig a particular item I can look it up online and see if it's still available. You know what would be nice to read sometimes - how new an item is, or how long someone has had it. I think it's Kasmira on her wardrobe blog that lists how often she's worn something and how long she's had it, which is really interesting to see as far as wardrobe utilization and remixing items into outfits.

Don't you dare be ashamed of Target and H&M - then I'd have to be ashamed of Target, the thrift store and stuff I made...

Yay on the outfit details from me. Also, when I'm wearing something new, or asking about whether to keep or return, I'll include a link to that item so members can see the model, more details and price.

I appreciate reading it on others posts so I sometimes list them, but something doesn't feel right when the items I'm wearing are old and the link doesn't really help get a similar item. I used to link to similar items in my blogging days so that the viewer has a way of recreating the outfit.

Like Jyoti, I like discovering new brands. Or sometimes I will revisit a label I've marked off because someone here was rocking it. The more info the better.

I like seeing where the item is from (gives me ideas on where to find something similar). I especially like links to new items still on sale, as Denise mentioned. My shopping has become much more efficient because of the "peer review" factor on YLF.

Most of what I wear is thrifted - sometimes from well known brands but not necessarily (or even probably) on sale now. I do like finding out where other people get their clothes and especially when it is thrifted so I guess I should change my ways. Interested to see what everyone says.

I like details because if it's something new I might be interested in it (and have been known to purchase). Also helps seeing what's out there for inspiration, what types of brands fit and I love a bargain so price points and great scores make me happy.

I find it educational, because I am really ignorant about brands, designers, etc. For instance, I would never have known that the dress I saw yesterday was an Anthropologie knock-off if it weren't for YLF. I would never even bother to look at the clothes there -- I know I can't afford them and they won't even come close to fitting.

Given that most designers and decent labels are out of my price range and don't make clothes in my size, I probably wouldn't bother listing details for my own outfits unless it was something special. They would pretty much all read: Marks & Spencer via eBay or thrift store, Evans via eBay or thrift store, no-name brand via eBay or thrift store, Tesco, Asda, TKMaxx, Wal-Mart or Ross via Mom...

Yay for me. I always do it on mine and I appreciate it on others' outfit posts because then I can track down an item or brand I like.
Incidentally I used to list each item on a separate line, and now I just do a big list all on one line because it was taking up a ton of room, esp. if I had more than one WIW in a post. It seems a little less obtrusive this way too.
(i.e. I write: "wearing x top, y shoes, z pants, etc" rather than each item on a separate line)

Since I have a small clothing budget, it encourages me to see someone else sport a great look incorporating some low-end pieces or thrifted items. If I have time, I list the outfit details so that that people know which items I'm wearing are currently available in a particular store and which are oldies from my closet. If I'm feeling cheeky about a particulary good score I've made, I'll even list the prices of my items.

Big yay from me! I love seeing where everything comes from. Especially if it's still available--sometimes if I love an item I'll try to track it down myself so it helps to know as much detail as possible (links would be great too). I post all the outfit details for mine in case it helps others. Also I try to be descriptive about the color and style of the items because one of our forum members Michelle is blind and she can't see the pictures. And then I can't resist some commentary about how I felt in the outfit or how it fits (or doesn't fit) with my usual style, or how I put the outfit together, etc. It makes for a very long-winded post but I figure some people really like that (I know I love it when others do the same because it really helps me learn). And if you don't like all that description, just ignore it and skip to the pictures.

And I wouldn't worry about where the item comes from. I shop at H&M and Target sometimes too! I don't think clothes have to be expensive! In fact I feel the opposite, I am always so jealous when people (yes like you Claire!) post their screaming finds from thrift stores or sale items from Ross/Marshalls/TJ Maxx and listed how little they paid--I wish I could be a better bargain hunter myself!

Interesting...I started a thread about this maybe a year ago, because I was wondering the same thing. I used to post all of my outfit details on my WIWs, then I stopped...maybe I will go back to it...

I usually don't post the details just for the sake of time, but I'm happy to share info when asked. I really like when people include the deets as a separate comment so that I can read their original post without having to wade through the details but it is there for easy reference if I want the information. (does that make sense?)
But as always, everyone has different preferences and a different system for posting, and you're never going to please everybody so go with what feels right to you.

Ditto Queen Mum and Nakidra. Especially if there are 3 or more outfits in a post. I'm not one for poring through 4 or 5 paragraphs just to see what someone wore for a day or two! I like it short and sweet. Maybe a blurb about why they are wearing it, or where, and how they feel about it, but I lose interest fast as it goes on.

I like the details! Partly because I like to shamelessly copy everybody- seriously, it saves so much time wading through all the stuff in stores! I consider you all my personal stylists!

Also, it shows that really cool things can be found at places that I wouldn't usually think to look, like Kelly's great orange blazer from F21, for example.
I think the very best ones are when people can put together a fabulous outfit from H&M, Target, etc. It's proof that you don't have to spend a fortune to look great.

I also love hearing when things are thrifted, because it gives me hope that someday I'll find something cool, too, even though it has never happened yet!

Good idea, though, to put the details separately, and not in the body of the description.

Hi, everyone, thanks for the great answers. I may have given the wrong impression as it's not the Target and H&M I'm ashamed of, it's the expensive accessories!

I too love to see blog posts where bloggers create outfits for almost nothing. This is a skill that is still in development for me, but I am very encouraged to see that it's possible.

The common thread seems to be that everybody likes finding out about a great piece that's currently widely available that doesn't cost a lot. So maybe I'll make sure to highlight those and make the rest "available on request" which I think is a great idea.

I can see the value in listing items that are still available. I guess I have so many eBay and past season things that rarely are my items still on the market. But I have been super happy to point anyone in the direction of finding what is still available!

I have to admit to not always listing when I wear a designer item, though. Not trying to show off...

I like details! All kinds, designer, thrifted, salvaged from a dumpster......

I love to see how people put an outfit together and then I can picture it more completely.

Also, I am a shameless copier!

It is work, so I appreciate the extra time it take to write it out!

Well, I still read Lucky magazine, even tho I think it's gone downhill, because it does list all the shopping info. On the other hand, it can be a lot to type... So I say, only if you have the time and energy to type! ;>

I like to read the details and especially admire the way many members mix designer and Target. Sometimes I'm embarassed because an item, like the camel colored jeans I posted today, come from Chicos, which is generally thought of as frump city here.

Chico's is funny. My sixty-something year old boss dresses almost exclusively in complete outfits from Chico's, and she looks a lot more stylish than I do!

I really like knowing the details of each piece, and I always post details myself. I've discovered some new brands and gotten some good ideas of where to shop from the details in others' photos.

That said, I don't think anyone should worry about the source of their items and whether they're discount or designer brands. It's all good.

I really appreciate reading the details - and it doesn't matter to me if it's an expensive or inexpensive item. In fact, I particularly enjoy those outfits that mix it all up. Further...even if an item isn't available anymore (past season, from ebay or what have you) I *still* like knowing what brand the item is, because if something appeals - perhaps other items from that same brand will too. A good example is the Willow & Clay jackets I've been seeing around here - I'd never heard of the brand, and will now look for them next time I'm shopping at Nordstrom.
