My first WIW (Yikes) and some K/Rs

After lurking for about 6 months, I finally decided to sign up and start posting. This forum has been wonderful and has helped me so much, even from the shadows! Here are a couple of outfits I've worn the past week.

1. NY and Company dress - worn to see the Lion King Musical with my whole family (parents, siblings, nieces, nephews, and my 2 girls and DH). So much fun!

2. New Halogen blouse from NAS and old Loft skirt - proportions seem a bit off to me. What do you think?

My keep/returns from NAS:

3/4: Kenneth Cole New York Single Breasted Walker
I love the color and the cut. It's just a little snug at the waist band, but I'm able to wear a sweater underneath. The petite medium is sold outline.

5/6: Halogen Seamed Leather Jacket
This is Angie's pick and the same one that Kari, Amy and a few others have. Fits really well (I think!) and I love the color. Just not sure how to style it.

Hi! It gets easier, I promise Love the color of that blue coat! Wow. I couldn't get all thumbnails to open (my computer connection is s l o w) but the dress looks fab in the thumbnail.

Cathy, welcome! Posting WIWs is a little nerve-wracking for me too, but it can be extremely helpful And you are off to a great start!

I love the leather jacket on you and am waiting for mine to arrive with bated breath. I think your instinct about the proportions in #2 is right - maybe that top would work better with pants? Or with a shorter topper over it?

Congrats on your first WIW post! Trust me - it gets easier each time.

You look positively stunning in the NY & Co dress. Beautiful fit and pattern on you. As for #2, the top may be a wee bit long for the skirt - it would look gorgeous with trousers or a midi length pencil skirt though. Love the colours and drape for you.

The cobalt coat is gorgeous but I'm afraid it does look a wee bit snug. Any chance of sizing up?

The leather jacket is fabulous - I definitely vote keep on that one.

Great first post! I love the leather jacket on you and the blue top looks great. As mentioned above, it might work better with jeans or trousers. I am torn about the coat - the color is stunning but it looks a bit small buttoned. But it is a terrific looking coat - you have great taste!

The blue coat is fabulous - what a great color with your dark hair. As others have said, it looks like it's pulling across the last button in #3, but I am just wondering if that's the angle of the photo? Because it looks like it fits you in every other aspect. What a great piece for your wardrobe for fall. Same as the leather jacket. Wow!

Great WIWs, Kathy! The dress is wonderful on you! I am such a fan of strong black & white prints, and that style is very flattering

I like both the NAS top and skirt, but I'm in agreement that the top might be a tadlong for skirts -- unless you eanted to try a skinny belt to bring it up a little -- although that might infer with its lovely drape. Oh, the stylish complications

Coat is absolutely gorgeous color and adorable style. I'd like to see you in a size larger and know it's OOS, but hang onto yours for exchanging power as returns come dribbling in after NAS.

Great leather jacket with great fit! You'll have to play with it. I'm a leather collector more than a leather wearer, so I'll be watching here for ideas too!

Hi Kathy. I love that blue coat on you! If it fits well, keep it. I personally would want to be able to wear a blazer under it. The dress is also marvellous. I think you're right about #2, these two pieces don't quite click together. I'm sorry I can't say why exactly. Having said that, you don't look awful in them, just not marvellous.

The leather jacket is a cutie.

You look amazing, Kathy! Such a beautiful sense of color and proportion! The dress is a hit! I'd suggest maybe a belt to define the waist in #2 and bring the top just a tad shorter, but it's great as is. As for the gorgeous coat, do you think moving the buttons over slightly would give you the ease you need? Is the fit in the upper back and armhole area good? It is a stunning coat, absolutely! In #5 and 6 you look like Kirti!

BTW --- your black shoes bookend your hair really well, but I can also see some cognac or medium brown shoes with the final look!

KathyL, congratulations on posting your first WIW! I love the dress on you, very flattering. I actually don't mind #2, do you wear heels? I would try pulling up the bottom of the shirt and adding a bit of a heel, just a suggestion.
On the walker, I like the fit and wonder if sizing up would result in too long sleeves. I'm with the others, try getting the PM and see if it's better.
The leather jacket is a hit. Treat it as a neutral and wear with just about everything. I got a similar one several years ago and wear it a lot.

I will try the blouse with pants next time. With the drape of the front, I think it would be hard to belt but I might try that next time too.

As for the blue coat, I will stalk for a medium petite. It is pretty snug at the waist band but I love the color so much. Fall weather won't hit here till October at the earliest, so I have time.

I will likely keep the leather jacket. I've never had one before, so it'll be exciting to try it out. @Beth Ann, Thanks for the comparison to Kirti! I think she is so cute, and I love her style!

Hi Kathy, and welcome! Great WIWs! It does take a lot of bravery to post doesn't it? I think you are much braver than I was because you not only posted, you posted with questions. Since you posted with mostly questions, I'll give you my take on them, but please please please keep in mind that they are just my opinions and they reflect my biases on proportions, etc. First off, your dress in #1 is absolutely lovely and it fits you brilliantly. The graphic print is fun! I hope you wear it often because it is a great piece. In #2, the proportions of the skirt and shirt don't seem off to my eye if I'm not looking at your shoes (which are very cute by the way). The strap on the top of the shoe stops my eye short a bit, though. I'd love to see this same skirt with a flat shoe with a lower vamp or a heel or something that is close to a nude color. I think that would let your eye continue down your leg and keep the long, lean line of the skirt and top. Your coat in #3/4 is drop dead gorgeous! I love gals with dark hair in cobalt blue. It is stunning. There is a bit of pulling at the buttons in #3, but I bet you could easily take care of that by moving one or more of the buttons over a little bit. I've seen it work miracles. (I have a full chest and often have to move buttons over just a bit to get the right fit and not be swamped by the rest of the jacket.) If you live close to Nordstrom, check with them to see if they would consider it a "basic" alteration and do it for free since this was a full price purchase (NAS discounts don't count as a sale--they treat the NAS price as full price). Your Halogen jacket? Absolutely gorgeous! I love the caramel color. I actually tried it on, but it didn't work for my coloring, so I sadly had to put it back. It looks fantastic on you, though. And you didn't ask about this at all, but I have to say, your gingham shirt and skinnies are really adorable on you. I love the juxtaposition of the tough jacket and the sweet shirt. Really great looking!

ETA: I see Beth Ann beat me to the punch on moving the buttons. Seriously, try it. It is shocking what an extra half inch can do. The proportions seem so right everywhere else, I'd hate to see you size up and be swamped.

I am so short on time today but actually wanted to comment so desperately in reference to the coat. I do have a similar issue with that last button doing what yours is doing, whereas the fit is perfect anywhere else. Sometimes a size up is not too much different on top so it works, sometimes sizing up makes it too big. I still think you should try the next size up.

I know we are all on the lookout for that " button that pull" but you know what? If you have curves, things will pull, things will crease etc... hehe.. I am envious ( in a good way) of those women whose clothes just "hang". Nothing really "hangs" on me. Therefore, my best solution to date is to move that bottom button, pass on the item or just don't button it at all.

Keep on the lookout for the bigger size. The color is fantastic on you!

Beth Ann, K can shop and Zapotee, thank you for the comments and suggestions. I never thought about moving the buttons. The reason why I didn't get the medium petite was because I was worried that sizing up will make it big in the shoulders and sleeves. I'll have to look at the buttons and see if there's room to move them.

K can shop, the shoes actually have a bit of a heel, about 1 1/2 inches. I see what you mean about the strap cutting off my leg line. Shoes are my biggest challenge because I have ultra fussy feet that can't really wear heels above 2 inches and I wear closed-toe shoes to work. It's the biggest part of my wardrobe that I really need to work on.

The leather jacket is fantastic! Wow! I am sure you will get a lot of use out of it, since this shade of brown goes very well with a lot of colours

Great dress. Great top. I think the leather jacket is a keeper. Funnily enough, I was thinking the blue coat (gorgeous color) looked a little big. I feel the shoes with the strap have a lot of personality and would make them the main feature with plain tops. Really great dress!!

Kathy, I wondered if those had a heel. They just didn't look like they were flats! If you've been lurking for 6 months, you know that this forum is a goldmine for gals with fussy feet, so you are totally in the right place! Angie has fussy feet too and gives lots of great suggestions that are comfortable and stylish. Plus there are so many other very stylish gals on this forum with fussy feet who weigh in too. Such an incredible resource!

Please let us know if the button moving trick works! I really love that coat on you.

Congrats to you with the first WIW ! I love all the pieces you have here.

The black white dress is gorgeous on you and I love that print!

I think the suggestion that MNsara made about trying a skinny belt with the blue top in #2 might help to bring it up a little. It's unfortunate that tops that work best for skirts aren't always the same tops (lengthwise) that work best for pants!

I also love the caramel leather jacket on you! You will be able to wear it with so many things in the Fall.

The color of the coat in #3-4 is outstanding. Do you think you might be able to size up on the coat? It is such a beautiful style and color for you!
