K/R: Pregnant skeleton Halloween hoodie--cute or inappropriate?

I am scrambling to find something to wear for Halloween and of course nothing fits. For Halloween evening DH wants to do an underwater theme--he is going as a scuba diver with a fake tank that he is making out of papier mache and a bubble machine. DD will be a mermaid and DS will be a shark or a Nemo fish. We tried to do this last year, but DH got sick so we didn't end up doing it. I had bought a mermaid costume last year but now of course it doesn't fit. I actually cut it up along the sides and am just going to wear it over some leggings and make do. It may rain though so we may not get to go out trick-or-treating after all.

During the day DS and DD have Halloween events at both schools in the morning and we are going to split up and each take one of them. I don't think I want to wear a torn costume to school, so I ordered this cheap sweatshirt from eBay which just arrived. It's a "pregnant skeleton" hoodie sweatshirt with a ribcage, heart, and smiling baby skeleton in my tummy. I was going to wear this sweatshirt for Halloween, but when DH saw it, he didn't like it and said it was morbid. What do you think? Of course, I wouldn't wear it around my friend who had a stillbirth. But do you think it's cute or inappropriate in general?

Well... it's no more morbid than dressing as a skeleton in the first place or allowing a child to dress as a skeleton. On the other hand, if DH feels this way it is possible that other parents will as well. :T

Instead of thinking that it's morbid, tell DH that it's an X-ray.

Yes Rae/Parsley/Deborah, I was a little surprised DH didn't like it. Because we dress the kids in matching skeleton pajamas all the time, and he's a radiologist so it's definitely like an X-ray. And the baby is smiling, so it's obviously alive. I thought it was pretty cute! But I don't want to wear it if it's offensive or upsetting to others.

Adorable. Funny and cute. I have to disagree with your husband. Morbid means "suggesting the horror of death and decay". How is a living foetal skeleton morbid?

I can see it both ways. I actually think it's funny, but the whole topic is so loaded that I think you can expect it may affect someone badly.

I think it's kind of cute. The baby is smiling, which takes away some of the morbidity.

It might be just a tiny bit morbid, especially since the eye is drawn to the baby skeleton...I don;t find it offensive though.

OT, I worked as a vet tech as a teenager and saw many x-rays of pregnant animals (common practice for some small dog breeds when there is concern that the puppies are huge). So it's oddly reminiscent of that for me! That might be skewing it for me

Why do you think it would offend your friend? Or would she think it's funny?
If you think it's inappropriate to wear around your friend who had a stillbirth, then it's inappropriate to wear in public. There is a 100% chance you will be around someone who has lost a baby during pregnancy or birth.

Fern, good point. I actually think my friend would think it's kind of funny. She definitely has a sense of humor. I didn't even think it would be offensive until DH said it was morbid. But since she just had a stillbirth, I just feel a little sensitive about wearing anything around her that emphasizes the fact that I'm still pregnant. I'm planning to bring her lunch on Wednesday and give her a gift (Etsy necklace with all her children's names and an angel wing with the baby's name) so I wouldn't want to wear anything like that when I see her (esp since her due date was Halloween). I would be wearing this to DS's preschool, which is a totally different school.

You're a good friend & now I see why a baby/pregnancy Halloween costume would be especially hard for her.
I think it's funny but I can also see that it could cause hurt.

I think it's meant to look like an X-ray of you and the baby so it's funny. If it showed a dead skeleton baby, that would be different. I lost a baby before I had my 2 children, and for what it's worth, I wouldn't be offended by it.

I was a pregnant Catholic school girl a few years ago. Now that was VERY inapropriate! But funny! There was also a pregnant nun at the party.

If that is morbid, then isn't most of Halloween morbid? It's funny and cute and if you are going to celebrate Halloween in the first place, it's completely appropriate.

Hmmm. I thought about this one. I have an incredibly twisted sense of humor. I am just finding this particular image a bit creepy. I could explain why but feel like this isn't the place. I don't think it's the most offensive thing ever so you could probably get away with it, but even for Halloween, this hoodie is kind of creepy and tacky to me.

It sounds really cute to me, but if you're worried, maybe you could wear something else around it to make it look like an X-ray instead of a skeleton? Like, a dark sheet with a hold cut out around your tummy and chest. Then when you put your arms straight out, it would look like an X-ray. That might be kind of cool since you're a doctor.

It sounds cute to me - particularly with the smile - but Scarlet has a point.

Speaking of mermaids and underwater, I saw a cute fish costume over the weekend that didn't look terribly complicated. She cut out iridescent fabric in the shape of a fin and attached it to the side seam of her leggings below the knee, and the lower part of her arms. She also made a little mini skirt.

Also saw a creepy baby costume that kind of puts your smiling skeleton to shame. It is probaby all over pinterest, but she is pregnant too and somehow attached doll arms to her shirt so it looked as if the baby was busting out.

Ana has a great idea! I have a very morbid sense of humor and think the shirt is cute, but I don't think it's worth the risk of unintentionally offending or hurting someone.

I think it's okay - Halloween IS morbid, after all.... My friend dressed herself and her newborn as undead and a couple of people complained but I thought it was funny.

Edited: Duh. I thought both pics were nature pics and didn't click on them; didn't realize you were in the first one. Now that I actually see the top, it makes me giggle and still somehow squicks me out. Still not helpful. LOL.

I think that is very cute. No issues wearing it whatsoever. It's not remotely graphic or disturbing at all.
