K/R kamalikture dress. Eta: back on the fence

I bit the bullet and ordered this dress I've been eyeing. I'm firmly on the fence.

My daughter have it a complete and resounding giant thumbs down. She said it's unflattering because it comes away from the body at the waist and looks like a sweater for a 600lb man. She's not normally opposed to unconventional fit, and squealed w delight at my EF harem jumpsuit. She was okay with it layered under a jacket, but I don't want that to be my only option.

The sleeves are insanely long and need altering if I keep it. That should be simple enough.

What do you think?

I don't hate it, don't love it--- I think a dress like this might need to hang off a shoulder line to really look like it was meant to. I like the sleeves worn bunchy though! I think that it might be better if it was right above the knee, and with the right shoes or boots.

It doesn't sound like you love it.

The length is nice, the neckline is flattering, and it does seem to drape well but I do see your daughter's point about it flaring out at the midsection. I feel I could go either way on it but the deciding factor may be whether it has enough versatility for you. Also, if you plan to wear it into the colder weather, would it work with tights and boots?

Kids, eh? I think Dianthus summed up the pros/cons well.

I have some super-voluminous sack tops so I'm not opposed to that look per se (though I agree they probably look better under jackets).

Were you able to try a size -- or two -- down to compare? I wonder if you'd get the same cocoon effect and comfort minus the contentious side/front volume.

[My other thought is that this dress may be designed for women with curvier hips, and you're not filling it out so the fabric is collapsing down.]

I really like this on you. The cocoon shape is nice but I want to see some sleeve scrunching for some structure. And ...... Since you are not really happy with it ...... I am not going to convince you I am sure you could find better dresses with higher happiness factor

If you don't love it, you don't -- and you should not keep it.

But I think it is pretty amazing. It might be a size big. Hard to say. But I like it as is, too.

Anyway, as Neel said -- I'd love to see the sleeves scrunched and also with a pair of booties. It just feels un-styled here, not unflattering. But we are not seeing the side view, either, and I know that can be telling.

Sack dresses are great but kind of like lotto scratchers... You can't tell if you've hit your numbers until you actually 'scratch' them by trying them on! I personally don't think this one is hitting your numbers here. (And I NEVER pay good money to alter anything that isn't already a complete winner in every other way.) Just my two cents!!

I am on the fence as well. Kinda like it actually, but wonder if you could even size down? I am sure you can rock this and it'll look fab. But if you aren't loving it off the bat then, hmmm. Ok, maybe the sleeves are skewing it for me. That's pretty ridiculous isn't it?...

I'm going on a girls' trip to Chicago in a few weeks. I'll save my return money and hopefully find a great dress while I'm there.

In sad news, I was just doing some closet clean up and noticed my EF lantern dress has gotten pretty badly pilled. I'm so disappointed! I'm considering trying to return it. I wouldn't usually after 2 months, but it's quite bad. I've probably only worn it 10 times!

Now I really really REALLY need to find a great, simple layering dress.

I'm waffling. I added 3 pics up top, one with a jacket and one to show the side view.

I'm seeing where dd's mumu comments are coming from in the side view. I'm still not hating on this dress though.

I'm also feeling a little more love with it seeing the condition of my EF lantern dress. I really like the ease in the middle of that dress. Funny, because that wasy initial hesitation about that dress. Now I love it for not having to worry about segmentation lines from hose or a clingy middle to make me self conscious.

Eta: the dolman sleeve comes almost to my elbow, then has a long thin tube attached well past my wrist. I'm considering is I altered it to have the entire extra sleeve removed, leaving just the dolman. It narrows at the arm. So there wouldn't be any modesty issues w removing the sleeve.

Here's the other dress I picked up for this winter. I got it for a song, so I'm keeping it for a while to try. I only like it layered, so I don't really want both my winter frocks to only work layered up.

Do you want both winter frocks to be black?

I personally adore this look, including scrunchy extra long sleeves. Movement is the key to this kind of style. It's hard to freeze it in a photo. And it's a look you need to own and be at ease with wearing. I think you can do it!

I like the dress too. AND I absolutely would not alter those sleeves. The dolman-tube sleeve combo are one of the things that makes it funky! Also, I wouldn't wear that jacket over it - it just really interferes with the lines and drape of the dress.

The second dress is a fairly light navy, but I wouldn't really mind if both were black. I buy alot of non black dresses because they're less boring on their own, but black just layers up in the cooler weather better for me.

I'll keep stewing.

I don't dislike the dress. I think right now it isn't styled correctly.
I would like to see it with black booties, over black legging ala deborah or with black tights. Also I would like to see a long silver chain or necklace added.
If you are absolutely looking for a layering dress this is not it.
This is a dress to be worn by itself and as alaska girl said you need to own wearing it.

Hmm, I like it from the front but find it too big from the side view. I vote try sizing down.

I think that this is the one that I tried too. I did re-order a size down and that one still had plenty of room through the middle but the sleeves were fairly tight in the smaller one. I ended up returning both.

It looks better on you than it did on me. I love the style but I am trying to avoid keeping anything I have hesitations about.

I'd prefer to see it with tights and tall boots or booties. I think a size down for sure. Topper or no I'm not in love with the side view, but know it will be in motion and seems modern and comfy.

It is the fabric that concerns me and throws the look off for me. Cocoon dresses only work to my eye if they have a fabric with just the right amount of movement and structure at the same time. While it is very hard to tell from a still photo, the fabric on this dress looks to be very soft and a little bit thin. It's almost giving me a nightgown vibe because of the fabric, not so much the shape. However, if I am reading the fabric wrong from the pictures, then I vote thumbs up. I have no issue with either the shape or the fit, just the fabric.

I like it and tend to not focus on the side view, which is my bugaboo and I never like on myself. But will you wear it? Do you want to wear it?

I don't care for the dress; I don't know that it is cut for you especially when viewed from the side. I think you could find something better. I agree with Echo that there is something about the fabric that is bothering me—I feel like the fabric looks almost limp in spots or something.

Traci... I love it! And I love how the dress folds in on itself... gorgeous. I have a similar dress and I am also a little curvy. I am very clear that my dress does not make me look as 'slender' as some of my other clothing but I am happy that it hits the JFE category. It's one of my favourite dresses and I can layer over it, wear leggings with it, go barelegged, etc.

BTW, I actually had mine slightly taper from the hip down.

I have worn a cocoon cardigan over it, a jacket and sometimes a sleeveless soft jacket (sleeves make it tricky but it works). It's a very versatile dress.

I would wear it the way Deborah does, with black tall boots to lengthen the line all the way down to the floor, or I'd wear it with a floor-length black skirt, or indeed black trousers.

You could add a small black fitted jacket cropped below the bust if you wanted to please your daughter, but personally I'm with Deborah -- I love it as is and would fully commit to the look, like in Deborah's photos.

I wouldn't shorten the arms either BTW. I'd embrace their length too.

I think if you'd try one size down it may be very practical, and edgy-but the sleeves have to be scrunched to elbow, for sure!!!!:-) I really like it on you, but can relate to the no waist definition fobia:-(. It looks quite fresh and love it unbder jackets, too!
