I need a new phone: 6s or 6sPlus

I know I should probably ask this on a tech website, but I don't know any, and I probably wouldn't understand the answers. My phone (iphone) is nearly five years old. I'm planning to get a new one, either the 6s or 6s Plus. Do any of you have either of these? I'm trying to decide which would be better for me. I occasionally make calls, text a little, email and web surf a little, take pictures, make appointments. Mostly I use my ipad at home. I really don't know why I should prefer one over the other. The price difference isn't much, especially amortized over the next five years. Any suggestions? Please don't suggest a non Apple. My husband wants everyone on the same page, so to speak.

(Disclaimer: I don't have either of these. I have a 5s.)

Personally, I'd choose the 6s in a heartbeat because I like my phone to be small enough to use with one hand. I have small hands, but I think a 6splus would be pretty hard for anyone to use one-handed. It's a phone, I need to be able to hold/use it and do something else with my other hand, like hang on to the bar on the subway or hold a coffee cup or whatever. I also like to be able to put it in my pocket.

The flip side, I guess, would be that the plus would be easier to use as a computer/tablet alternative with the bigger screen. Like you, I have an ipad also (as well as a pretty portable laptop), so that's not a big issue for me.

ETA: The phone I own (the 5s) is actually smaller than both the 6s models. To be honest, I feel like even the 6s regular is a little bit too big for my small hands, and I really wish they'd make a narrower version again. But maybe that's just me.

6 Plus ALL THE WAY. (And I have very delicate hands). I have the 6 Plus and Greg has the 6s - and my phone is better! Better screen, camera, size - and the list goes on.

Oh wow. You guys aren't making it any easier. My current phone is a 4s. It is really dinky by comparison with the 6 and even with the 5. I have long fingers but my hands themselves aren't big. I guess I was thinking the plus might be good when I'm out and about for seeing anything on the screen since I need reading glasses. On the other hand, the 6s would be easier to fit in my purse.

Hmmm. I have the 6s and I love the new camera. I debated getting the plus size but was worried it wouldn't go In a pocket when I go for a walk. Also I have an iPad that I use for web surfing and books. If I didn't, I might have gone with the plus size.

6S Plus! I had the iPhone 6 and recently upgraded to the Plus and I love it. I like the bigger screen.

Are you near an apple store at all? I would highly recommend going in and playing with them. We have tried putting them in our pockets (we asked first so they wouldn't think we were trying to steal them!) and there was no way the plus was fitting in my jeans pocket. It only barely fit in my husband's much larger pocket.

Yes, there's one in town. I've been checking the reservations for a 6s Plus with 128 memory and they're not available here. They probably have the 6 Plus that I could hold. If I get the 6s I could get it immediately.

This summer my 91 YO mother went from a buy-minutes-at CVS phone to a 6 Plus. I know, strange... She lives in a retirement home and doesn't use a regular purse much. She wanted a little knitted bag that her new phone would fit in. I looked up the measurements and made a 3D mock up out of cardboard to see if the bag I was knitting for her was big enough. The 6 Plus IS pretty big!

My husband thinks the Plus is too big. He went from keeping his phone in his pants pocket to his shirt pocket, when he got the 6. He asked if I would be putting my phone in my back pocket. No, probably not. In fact, when I'm walking the dogs I often leave my phone at home. I checked jacket pockets and I think either would fit.

I just upgraded from a 4s to a 5s. One of my DDs has the 6. I like what I have and didn't pay too much for it.

The 6+. It's practically replaced all my tablets AND laptop... Hehe. But I'll say my bro got a 6s because it fits pockets better...

Not particularly... But I always use a wired headset because I have probs generally talking into cell phones. I accidentally punch buttons *like* with my ear... Haha!

I do that too, Rachy. Today I was speaking with a client and inadvertently used my ear to switch from a voice call to FaceTime on mute and had to hang up and start again. That was on my old iPhone 5, demoted to be my work line.

I have the plus and love it. I don't have big hands either. I got used to the width and size of the plus in about a day . Yes, you have to be more careful with not carrying it plus your coffee, your sunglasses, two bags of groceries, your purse, and your keys all in one hand. I pop it into coat pockets easily . No, it doesn't fit in my jeans pocket - but that wasn't a deal breaker for me. It also fits in my wallet, which is what I care most about. Camera is great - plus you can read everything on it ! I'm old though, and stuff like this all of a sudden matters

If you already have an iPad, I'm not sure I'd get the Plus - it's bigger and it's a little awkward as a phone, but if you do a lot of reading/browsing when you're on the go it's nice. A friend has the plus and she doesn't mind the fact that it's too big to fit in her pockets, because she always carries a big purse/tote. I like to have the option to just throw my phone and my keys and my small wallet in my pocket on occasion, or carry a very small bag.

If you want to save a little money, you could go for the 6 or 6 plus rather than the 6s - there's not a ton of difference unless you're a real techhead and now that the 6s's are out the 6 should be cheaper.

Lisa, what kind of phone wallet do you have? I was looking at Coach's website and I'm not sure there are any that fit the Plus. I really need to revamp my wallet. It's so fat it takes up all the room in my bag.

Laura, I do have an ipad but never take it anywhere except when we go on vacation. So the Plus might be handy when I'm out and about.

I have a 6, so I am behind! But my husband works in tech, and the guys he works with usually have all the latest gear. He says a lot of them have broken the Plus, because they drop it more - doesn't fit in a pocket, and its not as easy to handle. In his dept they have had more broken screens this year than in the past 5 years.

I recently bought a Samsung tablet - the biggest one - and I still reach for my iPhone 5s most of the time. It's just so handy. I bought new Otterbox cover (our family always uses these) at Amazon for only $20, so it's well protected.

Lucy, that's definitely food for thought. As I said, I have the 4s, so even the 6s is much much bigger. Here's a pic of my phone and my husband's side by side. I dropped my ipad and it wasn't covered by applecare anymore and it was $$$ to fix.

Have to say a few more things:

The 6 Plus is really not awkward as a phone. You get used to the bigger size in two ticks.
It's very easy to use.
It does not replace a tablet by any stretch of the imagination. I have an iPad and a desk top too. I use them all.
It's best in a bag - NOT a pocket.
Must get rubber case for the big phone.

My 6 Plus is the BEST bit of technology in my life. I never want a small phone again.

Angie, thank you for popping back in. Handling the Plus as a phone was one of my concerns. My hands are probably bigger than yours, though. I definitely don't put my phone in my jeans back pocket. Right now my bag is completely hogged by my wallet. I need to do something about that. I was looking into phone wallets, but I don't know if that's really practical. A protective case is probably a better idea.

Ok, now I'll be cheeky and argue, Angie! Hehe. My tablets are all occasional use tvs and a tiny bit of magazine reading now. My laptop only when I have enough energy to lift up the top and clear my email inboxes of junk mail and feel a real need to italicize.

Oh, work purposes... Like spreadsheets... They don't count, hehe

I was a CPA, and so I used spreadsheets A LOT. Now I only use my laptop for a couple of reports I do once a month for a nonprofit I volunteer for. Actually, when I turn it on, it takes a long time for all of the email to come in. Anyway, that's why my typing is so bad here, because it's on my iPad.

Wow, I see what you mean - your wallet really is a handbag hog. I recently changed to a slim zip clutch which is longer but much thinner and I'm really happy with it. Mine's a Burberry but Fossil also have a great range of them. Won't fit in teeny tiny handbags but then neither would a 6+

I went with the 6S -- my husband has the Plus. I did not want my phone to be any bigger. If I really need a larger screen, I'll use my iPad. I like being able to fit my phone in jacket pockets, the phone holder on my bicycle, etc.

I agree with JAileen. Go to the store and hold them. For that matter, go to the store anyway. That's what I'm going to do from now on. (See my separate post about my hellish experience with AT&T.)
