It's interesting to see how tall people are. I think of some posters as being really tall, like Tanya, and Janet, but in actuality, I have no idea. I'm 5'3."

I'm 5'6". I used to be 5'7".

I have heard before that I seem taller in photos than I am. I find that odd. I also thought Dianthus was at least 5' 8" if not taller. funny how that is.
Maybe if everyone took a pic near a doorknob or kitchen counter it would level the field so to speak
Oh wait, I do have a counter pic, but I'm lounging back onto it, so it's not really as accurate.

I'm 5'5". I will go the opposite of some posts and say I used to be 5' 4.5". I "grew" from better posture due to ballroom dance!

I usually buy regular pants but actually bought a pair in tall once because the rise fit better. I wish more brands did this...often the only difference btw regular and tall is the inseam length. I'm going to hem anyway, I would definitely buy tall and just hem more if it meant a better fit in the rise.

OK, I know I am tall but after reading this I am feeling especially tall. I am 5'10" maybe a smidgen over. I am pretty proportional, of course I have long legs and arms but nothing crazy for my height. I usually need somewhere between a 33-34" inseam depending on the pant and shoe. Sleeves are short for me. I have issues with dresses not having the waist and hips in the right place. Sports bra catch me under the arm. I have a somewhat shorter raise so some talls are too long for me. Joys.

Suz, made the comment about her daughter being boarder through the shoulders than her even though they are about the same in shoulder width. I can see something similar in my kids. My oldest is ALL legs and arms, no torso. She is tall but not as tall as her little sister who is more proportional. People are always amazed that my youngest is considerably taller than her older sister was at her age. It is the long limbs of my oldest that make her appear taller, although she is just a smidgen taller than her peers. My youngest is a head taller than her peers. Funny how proportions trick the eye.

I'm just shy of 5'8" so 5'7.5" is probably more accurate.

All torso. Short legs. Ugh. I sometimes order tall camis to get some length. Bomber style jackets never work on this torso...

Mo - for some reason I always thought we were about the same height, but guess a wee bit different.

To Suz's point, people always assume I'm taller than I am. I think it's partly because no one thinks anyone's as short as I am, but partly because I'm short-waisted, so I read a little taller.

And it's funny to read about misconceptions about peoples' heights! In particular, I always kinda thought Janet was on the shorter side. Probably because she's nearby geographically, has similar coloring and a similar curvy (although slimmer and fitter) shape, and wears a lot of the same colors as me. Therefore, I assumed she somehow must be on the petite side too. Which really makes no sense at all, now that I think about it.

I am 5''1" with a short torso. Sometimes I can wear regular length pants without having to hem them....because they are meant to be ankle length

Wow,this is FASCINATING. No one is taller than I thought but many are shorter!

As for proportions, I am still stumped by mine. Some things that should be superlong on me (like the hooded cardi) are shown on a 5'11" model in heels looking the same. Pants are often too long, but petites are too short in the rise.

Fun thread! I am 5' 2" and short waisted. I have to have petite tops 99% of the time, like Shiny. That's why I've just basically stopped shopping in the misses' depts. for tops. I also do quite well with petite bottoms, although I can occasionally squeak by with a regular bottom. But I will have to hem a regular bottom. I also often have problems with the rise in the regular bottom being too long, so I have to be very discerning about buying regular pants. That's why I normally try to stick to petites' in bottoms too, because it's just easier.

I am 5'10" and long-waisted. I don't always need "tall" pants, but I do usually wear pants with a mid-rise or a bit higher in order to cover my midsection.

5'10" with longish legs, long arms and regular torso, although I feel it is long when I buy shirts...seems like no one makes them long enough! I used to feel quite tall, but for some reason I feel average now. Reading everyone's stats makes me realize I am on the tall side!

I'll tell you what, I'll get the stuff off the top shelf for you if you don't mind grabbing that stuff from the bottom shelf for me

5'6", but long of leg and short of torso..,

Proportions are a really interesting thing as far as people's perceptions of height. Many of our friends have expressed disbelief that DH's height is what it is (6'8"). Because he is blond haired and blue eyed and has a very friendly face, he never SEEMS that tall until you are right next to him (and then you look up and say OMG!). But men who are several inches shorter than he is can seem more imposing if they are dark and have an angled face and a dark brow. DH also has a proportional torso, so he isn't a "spider" tall man with very long limbs and hands.

DS#1 is "only" about 6' tall now (he is 14), and he is wearing a tall size in jackets. He had a job this past summer because he wanted to buy a leather jacket, and when we went to buy one, he needed a size smaller, but a tall (in other words, the XL regular fit him better than the large, but once we switched to a tall, the XL was HUGE and the large tall fit much better - again, all proportions).

*sigh*

5'0" and take a petite everything. Especially in jackets/coats/outerwear which can really limit my options.

Other than the inconvenience of having to be a little more mindful while shopping, I quite like being short.

5 ft 7.5 in with short torso and long legs and arms. Usually a reg size 8-10 but struggle with inseam length or arms not always long enough. Tall ill fitting due to too long rise. 9.5 shoe.

5' 9", long waisted with shortish/average legs. No problem with sleeve lengths either, but cropped jackets just don't work on me. It makes me uncomfortable to feel that my torso is "hanging out" of the bottom of the jacket.

Not at the meetup, but I am 5'5 and 1/2". I usually wear 3" heels so it throws people off.
Just yesterday I had to ask a tall woman to please hand me an item from the top shelf in the store - I could see it, but couldn't reach it.

I am 5'5" but people tend to think I am tall. I definitely don't have long legs though - I have short legs and a long body.

5'5", but I don't really look tall because I have a slim build, and my legs are not particularly long.

5' 9" with long legs, especially from the knee down.

5'3.5, but I say 5'4. Short waisted and relatively broad shoulders.

I am similar to you Runcaria ! but with a size 9 shoe.

I am short waisted... or maybe low boobed... shorter body with long legs. No shoulders to speak of...

Always wear 2 -3" heels , no flats, I like to "feel" myself at 5'10 ".

I am the oldest of seven children... my sisters range from 5'9"- 6'1" and brothers both at 6'3".

My four children are all taller than me- even my 14 year old daughter.

It is funny how it is all relative. I look at family pictures and I feel dismay at my shortness... but IRL... I feel OK- somedays even tall ! Ha !

I find this is really hard on someone trying to find their sense of style... or reinvent one after so long. My sisters are all long line Dramatic/ Flamboyant types... they do not wear shorter jackets or tunics. I try on some of their gorgeous stuff. I am overwhelmed.

Oh wow! Not many in my league :D. I am 5'4 or may be 5'3.5. I have a short torso and longer legs. Short waisted. I have never bought anything petite, but that's only because petite is generally not a size here o_O. I buy regular inseams in most of the UK retail stores (M&S, Next etc).

Almost 5 feet 9 inches with long legs.

5'11" with long arms and legs. I definitely need tall sizes to get needed pant length and for items with full-length sleeves. Occasionally I am happily surprised when a regular size is long enough.

This is a great thread. It's helpful to realize how different everyone is, in terms of height and shape. And clearly, super models with their perfect proportions are all genetic freaks.

I am 5'3 , and wear regular pants, but sometimes could use petite jackets for arm length...
My mother's parents were 5'2 and 6'4... hence I am the smallest of my siblings.

Niki Lea, I've actually seen Heidi Klum up close, and she is not perfectly proportioned - the closer you get, the odder she looks. As you get further, she looks better. It's an optical illusion. IRL she is built like a giraffe or an alien - beautiful but in an unsettling way, all legs, no torso, super gangly. Just sayin'.

I am 5'6", so not tall at all (but thanks, Columbine). I have always wanted to be 2" taller.

I have long torso, waist and rise; and short legs. If I magically got the desired 2" and they went into my legs that would balance me out. I wear regular inseam pants, though I have to hem some of the more flared styles if I don't want to wear them with very high heels. I also wear regular tops, but tall ones fit me better. However most times the smallest size is too big for me, so I have to stick with regular sizes.
