How do we feel about Lace monogram necklaces?

So this is going to be a long winding tale. Last year I was searching for a necklace to celebrate passing the bar and finishing up school forever ;-). If you remember last fall it seemed that nameplate necklaces were in as were necklaces declaring, "hope", "happy", etc. I fell in love with lace monogram necklaces. I think it's feminine and a little romantic. I've often said my jewelry preferences have 2 extremes. I love dramatic statement pieces as well as romantic sentimental pieces. I did a search on Pinterest and found several variations in a multitude of colors and sizes. I'm a fan of lace motifs so, yeah I was completely sucked in. I realize this isn't something that would appeal to those of the UPW persuasion, or androgynous persuasions but if you have an opinion I'd love to hear it. Part of me feels it's a little old fashioned, tacky and possibly dowdy more than half of me is completely enchanted.

I love mine! Rose gold given to me by my children for Mother's Day last year. I am a pretty minimal dresser, so I find it adds some interest to my plain background. I actually find the juxtaposition of androgynous/ ladylike very appealing and sport this look often. Plus, it reminds me about my kids, just as yours for your big achievement!

I like it! I don't have one quite like this, but I have a necklace with my name (which is short enough to work well). I wear it all the time with casual outfits for some interest when I don't want anything long or dramatic.

I really like it and I would wear one myself, although I've never seen them before - I think with your clean classic style, there is very little danger of tacky or dowdy - it's a very graceful compliment imo.

NDMom- I LOVE rose gold. It's so warm and rich. I agree the swoops and swirls of the monogram adds a feminine touch to an otherwise androgynous outfit (I'm thinking plain khakis and a button down shirt) without looking fussy or out of place.
Sara L.- I have another one I got that was supposed to be my name but I didn't want strange people calling me by my first name and me trying to figure out just how they knew my name (oh yeah, I'm wearing my name around my neck! lol). So I got Esq instead and I love that necklace too. It's more of a fancy script rather than a monogram.
Torontogirl - I think you have the right of it. Clean lines help the design of the necklace standout, which would not necessarily be the case if I added a really busy print in bright/bold colors and lots of sparkly jewelry.

Not dowdy at all. Yes feminine, but that is not a bad a thing!

It looks terrific on you. I like the swoops and swirls (and that it is not made out of real lace. You don't want to know what I was foolishly imagining).

Lol, I was expecting a piece of white lace. Cloth. This is lovely. Not that cloth wouldn't be also, but it would be funky.

Oh, it's beautiful and an elegant classic piece. Unfortunately, not for me. I have memories of my mom's friend "gifting" me a heap of clothes when I was 13 or so, and the items were 70's polyester. Yup, stretch pants with elastic waists, shapeless polyester tops and there was a necklace in the collection as well; gold plated with the exact style of your lovely lace pendant. I never wore any of the clothes and the necklace just didn't work for me. Enjoy your piece, it does suit you.

I have a monogram locket that I received on my 10th birthday. A student recently asked if it was an "antique." How to answer....hmmmmmm. I like to wear it mixed with other elements, or sometimes on its own.

I think, if you wear it like an heirloom, rather than a trend, it can absolutely work. Sometimes we find something when it's trending, and then enjoy it forever. Angie's recommendation last season that we buy color now, before things revert to monochrome is an example of this kind of buying opportunity.

I love it! I have a gold one with my first initial on it. Initial and name necklaces always remind me of Carrie Bradshaw's "Carrie" necklace from "Sex and the City" (my favorite show) - it's something that's always in style.

So it seems that this does not read as dowdy or tacky. I imagine it could get that way. Thank you ladies for your thoughts on the matter.

Peri- Mine is sterling silver and I got it from onecklace.com I had the same issue where I'd find lovely ones for $100 and $200 sight unseen. This one is the small size and was only $31.95 USD. I have been very happy with it for the past 4 months.

Infinitea- I think we had similar traumatic experiences with 70's cast-offs sans the necklace. I got a heap of 70's hand-me-downs when I was in 6th grade in the mid-eighties. I was not at all happy about the scratchy wool plaid midi skirts that were looked "Catholic school" to me at age 11 -- this was NOT the plaid that every one else was wearing with fun neon colors. I also received a pair of low-rise flares with a faded crease down the exact center of each leg (shoot me now!) this was at a time when all I wanted to wear to was an over-sized shaker sweater and fitted high-waist black jeans (preferably acid washed ;-))

I really like it. And it doesn't read as dowdy or tacky at all. Indeed, I've seen people wearing name necklaces or monogram necklaces since the SATC episode, and that has been 10 years now. If they still translate well after this long, I doubt you need to worry about your beautiful necklace becoming dated or tacky anytime soon! YLF!

Love this! I've never seen anything like it. I do have a simple initial on a chain, and it makes me feel special when I wear it. I would never consider it tacky or old fashioned.
