Dressing down a red suit jacket

Today I decided to revive a great formula -- khaki's, striped tee and a jacket. This particular jacket is part of a suit (Tahari). I just liked how this outfit came off casual and polished. It was also a bit of a surprise that I'm wearing red white and blue but I don't look like a cliche.

Suggestions for other color combinations are appreciation.

Super cute! I love how the red is on the blue side which harmonizes with the blues in your outfit and looks less patriotic I think (less than scarlet).

I love the way you mixed the suit jacket with more casual pieces to creat this look. Black and white stripes are one of my favourites and I especially love it with red. It is very chic and your legs look fantastic in those trousers. I have a lot of suits and it's nice to have inspiration on how to dress them down.

I try to remember that so many flags use red, white and blue because it's so pleasing and fab! I like the crispness without formality of this look.

I LOVE this. Really, this is perfection. The jacket is so pretty! The word cliche doesn't apply to your outfit at all, but I'm curious: When *is* a red-white-blue outfit a cliche? These colors are in our flag too, so the patriotic connection is there for me too. I'm feeling a little uncertain about how to pull off such a classic combination with success, the way you do here.

Ingunn -- Great point -- I think cliche for me living in the US would be a literal interpretation of our flag: white stars on a dark blue background paired with red and white stripes. Also a flag motif would look cliche IMO.

Color combinations associated with holidays, flags or other kinds of organizations can look kitschy when the colors match exactly, but I think when you play around with the hues things get interesting. Adelfa makes a great point about this when she said that the red of my jacket has a blue tone to it because the red in our flag tends to be a brighter true red. A variation on the red white and blue theme would be dark teal, burgundy and ivory OR aqua, red-orange and cream.

We are separated at birth! I love this. I always feel a bit overexposed in red, but love it. This is a great way to tone it down and keep it classy.

Other color combinations that are fresh with red is with warmer or colors like certain beiges and tans, khaki's plus just a touch of black. That is a bluish red and might not work because a lot of those run yellowish, but you might have something in your closet.
