I've recently read that 1940s style was all about using minimal amounts of fabric in order to save it, with the focus on perfect tailoring. That’s exactly what I love about this period, there was little to work with style wise due to wartimes, yet the women still looked lovely. To me, therefore, tweed for being very wartime fabric (hard, harsh, grey) and anything herringbone both say ‘1940s vintage’ which is why the most recent addition to my small tweedy collection, the skirt I wore the first time today, seemed perfect for the challenge.
As my style icon for today I’ve chosen Wallis Simpson. Regardless of what she wore, the fit of her clothes was so noticeably immaculate, finished with one striking piece of jewellery and her brooches particularly appealed to me.
My today’s outfit Wallis in the office, consists of white button-down with high collar which it is buttoned all the way up, my nod to the modesty at the era when one’s skin wasn’t revealed much. My tweed skirt has a thin black belt and I’m wearing black heels. I’ve also chosen a bit darker shade of lipstick than I wear recently, because I think back then make-up was rare and women must have enjoyed it immensely if they had it and therefore wanted it to be seen. To bring the outfit to today I’ve added my own patterned nude hose.
The finishing touch is the giant pearl brooch that I’ve pinned under the collar of my shirt. I absolutely love how it transformed the outfit. This is my favourite part of today’s outfit and the trick I’m definitely going to reuse soon.
Bonus photos are close-ups of the brooch plus the textures of my skirt and my fitted coat.
