Denim skirt "styled"

Remember when I bought nine denim skirts? This is the one I liked best, with several different tops, more or less how I would wear it. Hopefully, it would be just slightly dressier than cropped pants. A few of you had concerns about its being an a-line. What do you think?

Hi J'Aileen. I totally remember the 9 skirts! And the choosing of this one. It looks a great fit. I like these tops the way you have tucked them at the side. For some reason I like the grey stripey one the least, can't articulate why really. Sits a bit too loosely at the back? I like the first white one the best. Glad you found a skirt you like after all that!

Jenni, thanks! It's funny that you should mention the grey top because I've never worn it in public. I bought it at a consignment shop, then promptly gained weight and couldn't fit into it. The neckline is a little odd, too. Anyway, I'm glad you approve of the skirt styling.

That looks really good! Indeed, a just slightly dressier version of cropped pants. I like the front detailing, and the fit is excellent. Great pairing with the tops, and how you vary up the tucking.

Ginger, thank you! You definitely "get" what I'm looking for. In fact, we're going to be visiting Texas in April, and (assuming I got the okay from YLF) I would take this skirt and wear it styled this way, with sandals, whereas at home, I'd still be wearing jeans, boots and sweaters.

I like the skirt and all the ways you've styled it - except I do think the collared button down is a lot of shirt for the skirt!

Btw, these outfits are very Native Wear to me... they just have a certain je ne sais quoi.

Rachy, thanks for your observation! I grabbed a bunch of tops that I wore with cropped pants last summer, except for the first one, which was too tight. I can definitely skip the long sleeve shirt. It's almost seasonally confused - short skirt with long sleeves.

Native Wear.. I'm not sure what to think about that. I did grow up by the bay, so maybe that makes sense. The other thought is even though I don't live in California, some people (my mother) consider this a California suburb.

The skirt looks like it could be a warm weather workhorse. It looks more like a pencil skirt than an a-line but will have room to move easily. I like 1 best of your styling photos.

I have to speak up in favor of the gray striped shirt! I think it looks fantastic with the skirt, and would be my first pick of the choices! I also like the white top in number one, and I think the button down has potential, but needs "something" more to tie the outfit together. I'm not a fan of the red shirt with it due to the length in the front. Skirt is great!

Joy, thanks! I searched on a-line and this came up. I think fabbers liked it because it wasn't very a-line.

Laurel, thank you! The grey top is actually very nice. It's EF linen. I probably stretched it when it was too tight. If I wash it, it'll probably be fine. Also, I should tuck or semi tuck the red one. Thanks for your observations.

You bet, JAileen! You'll fit right in in April. Though make sure to have a jacket - or coat - if you're going to be outside for a long time after nightfall. April tends to be very pleasant during the day, but surprisingly chilly at night (for us), and always blustery. I have vivid teenage memories of non-stop shivering in the wind at my brothers' night baseball games. My family just started leaving our winter coats in the Suburban each spring, when it got too warm to need them for any other activity.

I'm glad this worked out for you, JAileen, and I think A-line is perfect for a denim skirt.
I like the outfits with semi-tucked tops best, but you have plenty of options here. I hope it becomes a workhorse for you.

Oh, gosh, I'm weighing in on this so late I doubt I have anything to add to the perspectives you have already gotten.
I do love that it is a slight A-line - enough to provide ease of movement, but still look a bit pencil-y.
I like the sleeveless tops best, too, though I can't articulate why.
The long sleeve button front looks a little too buttoned-up to my eye. I wonder how it would look with the sleeves rolled and possibly another button undone if that wouldn't expose too much?
Agree that the skirt will be excellent for an April trip to Texas. Who knows which of the tops might be weather-appropriate on any given day, but isn't that true of an awful lot of the US in April?

Ryce, thanks! I was thinking that about the long sleeve white shirt. If I had rolled up the sleeves it probably would have looked better. I didn't really style it. It's funny, I specifically picked an a-line because a pencil skirt doesn't work for me. I hate having a waist that's too big. I'm pear shaped, but maybe I want to be called a-line instead! The fact that this skirt is only "sort of" an a-line was why people liked it in the first place. And the waist fits. Win-win. Yeah!

I love this kind of skirt for travelling in warm climates. It's fun and sporting and flattering and practical. It goes anywhere: daytime with a tee, evening with a blouse and shawl. Looking at your pictures makes me want to go on holiday. Bah.

Those sandals are perfect with it. I like it most with the fitted blouse in #1. I'm not sure about the button-down shirt, which seems rather formal. Maybe that one would work better with a slightly dressier shoe?

Approprio, thanks! The sandals are Vionic Bolinas, new for this year. I'm hoping they will become my new go to casual sandals.

I'd like to be on vacation right now. It's going back and forth between rain and snow today.

I like the skirt, especially with the white sleeveless tee and the red one. Less so the button down and sleeveless blouse. Try pushing up the sleeves on the grey shirt. Do you wear sneakers? When I had a denim skirt sneaks were my favourite footwear - the skirt was basically a casual shorts sub for me. I think your skirt is leaning pretty casual with the fading. Perfect with the tees and sandals or sneakers. If you do want to dress it up I'd pick something a little less plain than the white dress shirt /blouse and maybe dressier shoes so you have more contrast going on.

Jules, that's a good idea! I have some Stan Smiths that I bought in NAS. Re the long sleeve white shirt: I think I thought it looked casual because it was so wrinkled! I'm going to play around with it some more. Thanks for your suggestions.

I guess it does look casual - to be honest I think it's just too plain with the skirt. Maybe tucked in more, sleeves rolled, and with pearls or another necklace? But to be honest I just like the white sleeveless tee outfit a whole lot more The pieces look right together and the proportions are very flattering.
