I'm popping out of lurkdom today because it seems such a coincidence that Angie's post today was about denim pencil skirts, including ones with patches. I just finished repurposing a denim skirt (from thrift store) this weekend.
I took this Banana Republic denim pencil skirt and distressed it by cutting little holes randomly and then washing it to fray. I found a shirt with a boho vibe (also a thrift store purchase). I cut the shirt into patches, placing some on the underside of the holes and others on top of the denim. I lined the pockets with patches and embroidered a blanket stitch on the edges. I used a running stitch on the outside patches to simulate a Japanese-style mending stitch (I think it's called boro). Finally, I added trim from the shirt to the waistband.
This is similar to a skirt I saw at Anthropologie. I spent about $10 in materials and maybe 3 hours of time. I'm wearing it today with flip flops and a t-shirt because it's hot. I looking forward to wearing it with boots, tights and a sweater once it gets colder.
