Day 5 :: This Time Last Year I Wore (edition 2015)

Or -- it's all IN the head...or, wait, ON the head

The star of today's outfit is the grey beanie, just as the red messenger boy hat used to be in the previous years. I loved that red hat, but it's not been out this winter at all - as it is not covering my ears, it is not practical in harsh winter we've had and it's squashing my hair.

I've actually been on a mission to find the answer to the winter head covering problem for a while and beanie turned out to be the perfect answer. It keeps my head and ears warm, it does not ruin the hairstyle by squashing my bangs (which every other type of hat did) and I can also stack biking helmet on top of it without causing hair disasters. Win-win.

All other pieces from the outfit are old. Last year I tried BF jeans in an attempt to make them my new skinnies, but since my only pair has been abandoned due to change in weight and I haven't replaced them, skinnies remain the 'official' jeans style for Day 5 outfit because I wear them almost exclusively. Black turtleneck is my winter staple and this MEXX coat is several years old and I'm still nowhere near being tired of it.

This is the last post which compares my current with my older style preferences. It's funny, I remember being at a happy place at all previous stages, yet I personally like this year's outfits the most. That's how it should be I guess.

Ornella, I've loved looking at your "now and then" pictures. It's great that you have been in a happy place at each stage of your style journey. You certainly look lovely in all the pictures you have shown here.

I love this last look with the beanie. I think it suits you beautifully.

Oh, I love the updated 2015 look. I prefer the darker belt too instead of the red one breaking up the darker column. Beanies suit you so well.

This is a great post!
It looks like a red touch progressively withdrew from the outfit, it's interesting. Interesting to see that the red belt, such a very cute detail, had to go as soon as pants became skinnies. It's understandable. I would have made the same choice. Now that the straighter leg look is coming back, will the red belt reappear? I like the 2015 edition, but it feels like there is something missing... a cocktail ring? Gloves? Red scarf?
I agree about the beanie being a good head cover in the cold. However, where I live, imagine, it's far from enough. The best option is a lined hat with ears. Maybe for 2016?

The red hat has loads of character, it's so London 60s to me. So it should be kept as it's an outfit maker and looks great on you. But I agree, the beanie is such practical cap! When made from a lighter weight, it doesn't squash your hair the way other hats do. Plus it's a sporty kind of look.

What brand is your coat? It certainly has stood up well!

Well hello Beautiful!!! I just love this as a simple strong color statement. The focus is completely on the charcoal gray which you wear very well. The denim and black are nicely layered supporting neutrals. I like the beanie, but I do miss the cheery bright red cap. However I am drawn to the clean simple gray blue black palette. While the red cap was it's own accent I love the cohesion in the 2015 gray black and blue outfit.

I love you in the grey beanie! If only I could find something that worked like that for me! Most hats slide right off my head because they are too big! I try to find coats with hoods. If I have to shovel snow (that's not really an if, it's a given ) I wear a fleece lined hat with tie down ear flaps or a balaclava! That way nothing slides off. The same for outdoor sports. All sense of style goes out the door!

Ornella, I can undesrtand the love for your MEXX coat,it's a great style and pattern- and love this year's beanie to it (red cap was also cute!)! My black winter coat and trench were purchased in 2007, and am myself still not tired of them-but they started to show some wear of course, so I updated them both this winter but kept the originals, for not so dressy days, too:-). That's another reason for what I will probably never be a minimalist in my life.
