Are colored skinnies age inappropriate?

I saw this article on the internet about Khris Jenner (picture #1). The article criticizes Khris for dressing age inappropriately, trying to look like her daughters. It's pretty mean, but maybe Khris doesn't care, because to quote an old Hollywood publicist's adage, "no ink is bad ink."

I have been buying and wearing this trend since last spring because I wear jeans every day. I live on a ranch after all. And I like to embrace new denim trends. The way I style colored denim is more toned down than Khris's approach. Which is my approach to integrating trends at my age. Go minimal and/or add classic pieces. (Pictures #2 - 6)

But am I fooling myself? Maybe my efforts to make it somewhat age appropriate don't matter and people see colored denim and automatically think, young women only.

What do you think? Feel free to be frank.

I think you look lovely in colored skinnies. They don't look spray painted on you and you look quite refined in them. I actually think Khris looks pretty good in them although hers are a little tight and the leopard booties make it a little vampy. Also she wears a lot of makeup and looks very done up. You look natural and very subtle compared to her. However it irritates me that someone would write this about her anyway. She should be able to wear what she wants.

Hmm I don't find your outfits age inappropriate at all Denise. As you said, your looks are more minimalistic (no giant flashy earrings, crazy make-up etc), which honestly make your outfits feel much more sophisticated to me.

Um, I hope not. I didn't read the article (because I'm sick of all things Kardashian) but I don't see colored denim as age inappropriate at all. I love the toned down way you style them. I wear my cobalt skinnies and feel fine and I'm 40 plus.

I've never heard of Khris Jenner, but I don't think her outfit looks *bad*. What I don't like as much about her outfit, compared to yours, is that her skinnies are a little tighter (she's also curvier through the hips and thighs) and it's worn with a shorter top in a high-contrast color to the shade of the skinny jeans, which really puts a lot of emphasis on the hip/rear end. That's the part that I find a bit questionable. To me it doesn't scream "mutton dressed as lamb" the way a miniskirt worn with the same combination would; it's just a little bit over-exposed for my taste. I feel like I'd like the outfit a lot better if the top under the jacket was more of a tunic length, like your black henley op in #4. She's also wearing a lot of trendy elements at once in the outfit, but that doesn't irk me - I don't find moto jackets and animal print shoes and skinnies automatically age-inappropriate.
The bottom line is that I really like you in your colored skinnies!

Uh well I still wear them. Admittedly I've only worn my pastel ones this spring. Trying to figure out how I'm going to bust out my hot pink and electric blue ones.
I think the tone of the article was more about her in general than that specific outfit. For example her posting a nearly nude photo of herself on her son's birthday. I'm personally sick of the whole clan and hope they go away.

Speaking as a fan of colored jeans and someone of "a certain age," I may be biased, but I agree with the women here and echo bj1111's powerful words. You wear your colored skinnies much better than Khris and you are living by your creed that you "like to embrace new denim trends." Love the cream booties with the yellow skinnies.

@Kari - Khris is married to the former Olympic athlete Bruce Jenner and the mother of the kardashian (spelling?) girls who have a reality show ( a mighty terrible one, I think)

Granted, the jeans are straight legs (not super skinny) and the outfits are sophisticated. Well cut tops and jackets and impeccable shoes and handbag. Whimsical accessories on the 74 year old client! These ladies - my 70+ clients ROCK my style world.

Denise, you look killer in your coloured skinny jeans, and you know I take age appropriate dressing seriously. The devil is in the detail. You have aced that detail. (So have Vicki and Mary).

It is all in the fit and execution, and in her case, both are a tad iffy. Too tight, plus leather, plus animal print, plus oversize earrings and more trendy accessories, etc., is too much so she looks like she is trying way too hard. A pair of great fitting jeans of any color with a classic top and complementary footwear is great for any age. You are a good example of how to do it right!

How old are you? I'm early 30's and I think I'm too old for most of the trends out there (including colored skinnies), but the majority of people on this board totally disagree with me (an am admittedly NOT an adventurous dresser). It seems to me that sticking to the less-bright colors (greens and blues) could be age appropriate, but I'd be more wary about colors like pink, red, or neons. Then again, stores like LOFT and Ann Taylor sell colored pants, and they're not directed toward the teen set, so who knows.

I agree with BJ. If there's anybody here who should be cited by the Age Police for Colored Jeans Violation, it's me, not you. You look chic and sophisticated and fab in all your colored denim looks!

I agree with the others who say the problem with Kris's outfit isn't the fact that she's wearing colored jeans per se, but that she's wearing VERY TIGHT colored jeans in a light color with a very short jacket. And there is very definitely A LOT going on in that outfit, most notably all the bling on the jacket.

Thanks for the kind words ladies! I admit to being that kind of co-dependant person who *still* cares what everyone thinks. This made me insecure when I was young. I don't feel insecure any more but I would say I'm still a people-pleasing, wants everyone to like me kind of person.

... And to think my own mother is 180 degrees away from this. Sometimes the apple does fall far from the tree.

As for Khris, I thinks she pulls off this look even though it is too overdone to my taste -- too much make up, too much footwear, too much jacket, it all competes. However I would think of this regardless of age! But when someone is younger, they are allowed indiscretion. Whereas when they are older, you expect wisdom rather than indiscretion.

As for the Kardashians, they are intensely media hungry and Khris is the ultimate stage mother. However, I feel a little defensive about her. I'm admitting here I have my "trash Tuesdays" -- my day off when I watch bad reality tv the Kardashians included. So I know she has been dealing with body image issues, feels unattractive. It looks like she got into shape in this outfit. Why shouldn't she feel good about herself?

And Mary, you are NEVER age inappropriate to my eyes. Never, ever.

Denise, you have an TERRIFIC sense of style and every outfit here is absolutely appropriate! I saw this article and it got me thinking too...this photo of Khris Jenner does not make me think women of a certain age (and who are the fashion police to determine what age that should be?!) shouldn't wear skinnies - but it did make me think that she's just got too much going on in this outfit. And that has nothing to do with her age. These same jeans styled with a longer top, different shoes and toned down jewelry could have a more sophisticated vibe that would communicate an intent to keep up and have fun with the current trends without being a slave to them.

I'm nowhere near an expert like Angie but I have my own theory about the dread Age Appropriate: I think anyone can wear anything so long as they are seen to be busy or attending to life. (being dressed to be photographed for the tabloids because you need to generate p.r. doesn't count for this category of "busy.")

IOW, let's say the 80 year old is wearing a mini and working on her motorcycle. Are you gonna interrupt her to criticize her outfit?

I like that theory, Vildy. It's similar to my theory that says as long as I am decently covered and dressed appropriately for whatever activity I am engaged in (work, Date Night with Hubby, housework, gym class, lunching with the ladies, etc,), I will necessarily be dressed appropriately for my age as well.

i love skinny jeans, its just a matter of fi ding the right lenght of blouse, long, and not too tight, im 55 i wear them in colors with matching long tunic, and a nice pair if heels or flats, i have skinny legs, but i feel they should be covered by the hips, kris looks to me trashy, the way she dresses, not my cup of tea, and for the photos from 2 to 6 ladies you lok great!!!!!!!!,

Just had to chime in to say how STUNNING you look in #6! I had not seen that outfit before and you look totally gorgeous.

WRT the other lady, I don't like her look because it feels like it is all too, too much for my tastes. But I don't think it is age inappropriate. I think there is a tendency in our culture to expect women to fade into the background once they reach a certain age and those who wear attention-getting clothing violate that expectation. An MDAL label can be an easy way of forcing us to fade back into the background.

Exactly what Kyle said. I haven't seen anyone here styling their colored skinnies in an age-inappropriate way. Least of all you, Denise! Your looks are perfectly simple and restrained while still being interesting.

I don't think Kris Jenner looks bad in that picture, exactly, but yeah, the combination of shoes, jeans, earrings, accessories does read a bit "trying too hard."

I just want to chime in and say that I find you so fab in those colour skinnies. You wear them well, they fit you perfectly, they integrate your style. You give off a vibe that makes me want to know who you are, what you are all about. Don't toss your wonderful style because some journalist didn't know what to write about one boring afternoon. Yes bad mouths will always criticize, especially when jealous.

Kris Jenner has ALGO in the shot they used (which as we all know from trying to take photos of outfits - it's easy to pick a bad one if you want) and does work a certain diva kind of look. But she is what she is and seems to be thriving with the attention her choices garner. That's her thing. I wouldn't pick out the colored denim as a reason to think she is dressing age appropriate or not.

You look great in all of your denim looks ( I love your tuxedo jeans) and mix and match in your own distinct, slightly edgy funky style. It's you and I hope you keep evolving to find whatever makes you happy. It's hard to make trends and styles your "own" and not just copycat but you do it:)

I saw the article before and thought it was mean-spirited. Why all the effort to push women into age categories? The only change I'd make in Khris's outfit is the earrings--they should be toned down so as not to compete with the jacket. I'd like to see her rear view--that could be very unflattering because of her curvy hips. But I'd have to see it--she might look great.

I agree that colored jeans can be worn at any age. Just like other items of clothing, they have to fit right and be styled in a flattering way.
