As you know, my MIL lives with us and we've had an ongoing battle over smoking in the house (http://youlookfab.com/welookfab/topic/mil-issues).
Well today things were put into a different perspective. Remember when I had to take my MIL to the Emergency Department back in August when we all came down with strep? Based on that visit and some concerns the ER physician had with respect to her breathing, she had a CT scan done two weeks ago. Today her family physician called and asked to see her at 6:45 p.m. (her last appointment of the day). I knew immediately it wasn't good news.
The CT scan results are in and she has two very distinct tumours in her remaining lung. She had 2/3 of one of her lungs removed about 10 years ago due to lung cancer. It's now back.
We're waiting for an appointment now with the oncologist and will take it from there. Further testing will determine the true extent of the disease and different options will be discussed as a result. But it doesn't look good and I suspect life is about to become hectic. I'm glad we went with her to her appointment - she needed the support.
And the first thing she did when we stepped out of the doctor's office? Lit a cigarette.
