Lately I've been thinking of outfits I wore long ago. These were outfits that I felt fabulous in, long before I knew a thing about color or proportion. By and large I can now explain why they worked so well, based on my current understanding of my style. I love seeing how my eye and my style intuition were forming even then.

I'm dying to know items/outfits in your personal HoF. These outfits should be a minimum of 10 years in your past, should predate an understanding of style, and should have made you feel fabulous!

I'll start us off:

1. Age 7, palest blue smocked party dress. I now know that almost-white colors are my pastels. (ETA the pic is not of me. The ylf app wouldn't let me post without a photo, so I found this one.)

2. Age 10, as recounted on Day Vies's post, a pants and long vest outfit of cobalt and emerald jacquard. I love jewel tones, and the lines of my long vest were sleek and elegant.

3. Age 13, Levi's 501s with a black leotard, gray hoodie, and taupe suede Wallabees. Here I discovered my enduring passion for narrow pant legs, neutrals, and extremely simple basic pieces.

My rainbow-striped turtleneck and horse-print denim bellbottoms, circa 10 years old. I was GROOVY. I would still wear those bellbottoms today. Dang it.

My first really grown up fashion like coat at 13(black and white gingham but military style). Yellow flat leather boots with black opaques and a black babycord DIY A line mini skirt at age 14. My DMother's double sided green&black subtle pattern silk changeant reunion dress and kimono jacket redesigned DIY to my taste and body for my first NewYear's Eve party at 16(+green kitten heeled sexy pointed sling backs). My custom made cream white chanel(esque) wool skirt suit (worn for my high school graduation and black dotted tulle dress with light pink lining promo dress. My wedding dress...and so on...Oh, those were the (good, old) times...:-) Thanx for the nostalgic thread Adelfa!

Hi! I absolutely love this thread idea!

When I was four, I had the most exquisite cerulean blue suede genie slippers with a pointy toe and gold ring ornament. They were pretty spectacular with my Lanz of Salzburg nightgown but I begged to wear them out of the house. No dice. So sad there are no pictures.

At six I developed prepster taste and adored my wool duffle coat. I loved the toggle buttons. Other coats have come and gone but that was my favorite.

At seven I was besotted with the most beautiful First Communion dress in the world---lots of lace. My Mom bought it for me but cut off the built in pearl necklace rosary because she said it looked cheap. She was right of course, but I cried one thousand tears.

Quest for magical shoes is ongoing. Still buy too many coats--even in LA. Lace is still my favorite and I am definitely still a jewelry person!

I have fond memories of a turquoise velour top that I wore in kindergarten. I still love both the texture and color.

And I don't remember wearing it (I must have been 3 ish), but one of my favorite pictures of myself is in a dark red velvet dress. Dark red is still maybe my best color (certainly among top three).

(Hmm... seems I have something for velvet textures. I wonder how I can incorporate that into my current wardrobe....)

I have two distinctly different style loves from my past. Twirly skirts and tight, black, rock n roll. No pics here, but around '76 or so I had a purple layered nightie turned princess frock given to me by a live in tenant and then a favorite maxi dress of multi colors with a tube top. Fast forward 10 years and I was in skintight (and I mean Olivia Newton John in Grease tight) black parachute pants, black fingernail polish, and concert tee. Bandanas worn as a belt (oh to have that size waist again) and as 'bracelets' twisted around the wrists.

Mm...

- Yellow parka with embroidery on the front and fur trimmed hood, brown wedge-heeled mary janes, skirt (this was my school outfit)
- Quilted, pinafore long dress with pink puff sleeve top underneath from I. Magnins (Christmas)
- Swiss dot "Heidi" dress worn with patent mary janes (worn for rock climbing, hehe)
- Full-skirted jersey faux-wrap dress in navy, worn with high-heeled, pointy, matte Joan & David pumps and black hose (mid teens)
- Black and blue, full check skirt and dad's tan cardigan (early teens)
- Yellow pleated skirt and dad's tan cardigan (late teens)
- Jeans pegged with safety pins (teens)
- New-grass green swing dress, pearls, Varas, sunglasses (college)

Had a great blue jacket in the middle school years, but I wore my pants awful baggy. And then I was always freezing and wore this burgundy RL crewneck jumper and blue coat all the time. Not that I wasn't freezing later, but I suffered for fashion.

This thread is awesome! I doubt I have pix of my faves, but these come to mind:

Age 11, ruffled neck white blouse with vest, cuffed capri jeans, and combat boots.... Yep UWP boots even in grade school!

Age 13, tomboy fab in an olive crewneck tee, low rise Levi's from the boys' department (I totally remember scoring those at mervyn's... Remember Mervyn's???), and Vans sneaks.

Okay, more than ten years old is difficult - all pictures of my early teens are at my parents' house and I only have a few from childhood here with me.

I was a tomboy and didn't care much about what I was wearing, as long as it was practical. I needed to be able to climb trees any time and most of my friends were boys. I also wore mostly hand-me-downs and dresses made by my Oma, so I didn't really have a big opportunity to chose my own stuff.

Here are the pics I've found that fit fairly well I think. Of course I can't remember #1, but my mum said I loved to wear these rompers. I'm on the left in #2. Still love blue and green, checks and sturdy shoes!

The year was 1955 and I was 4 years old and my sister was 5. Our mom had made our pretty summer yellow dresses with bows at the shoulders. Mom had the picture colourized and I got to pick my favourite colour - wait for it - PINK! Pink still makes me happy.

Now I know how early my footwear obsession developed.

My knee high rain-boots in a pale pink that I wore rain or shine when I was 9. I cried when I grew out of them but luckily my grandmother wore them for gardening so I still got to see them

At 10 I had neon pink & neon lime green socks

Matching mother/daughter outfits. My mom's sister and my cousin on the right, my mom and me on the left. My aunt and mom made the outfits and this was about September 1954 I am guessing.

Um. I was 10 or eleven, and I had a purple and white 'bubble top' ( fabric was puckered due to elastic sewn all through it, like the back of some sundresses) which I wore with a pair of purple corduroy 'hot pants'.

I also had a bright turquoise and white herringbone tweed pair of hot pants with matching vest that I wore with a white 'poet's shirt' with ruffles down the front and at the wrist. It was the early 70's. So cool! But I'm kind of glad there aren't any pictures....

Awww, so cute!
I don't have any pictures to share right now. I remember a white lace dress over a pink shell. It had pearls for the buttons, big bow on the back and short puffer sleeves. I was maybe 4, my mom made it and I adored it.

I don't remember very many clothes memories before I was a teenager. I did have a very pink, very floofy dress when I was in young elementary school - think Easter dress - but I liked to wear it everywhere. Tres girlie, which is funny if you know me now. There were several proms and formal dances when I was in high school where we made my dresses - I remember one fabric in particular, it was a sheer iridescent purple with a check pattern in purple and green. I wonder if my mom still has those dresses stashed somewhere...

Oh, I have to add a very special memory. I was maybe three or four and I got a pair of black patent shoes and they clicked when I walked. I spent may any hour on the hearth just walking back and forth in my new shoes just to hear the 'click'.

Oh, oh, I have another. When my brother got married I made a dress from fabric that I brought back from Korea. It was men's shirting and I made the dress using this fabric instead of muslin. Everyone liked it so much I ende up wearing it to the wedding. My grandmother also mad a dress for the wedding. When I got the pictures back the I realized we both pick purple paisley for our dresses. This is one of my favorite pictures with my grandmother as I pinned her corsage. Such wonderful memories.

You'll all get a great laugh out of this one! I was 9 years old, and in a girls dress shop called Magic Mushroom with my mother, and I wandered into the pageant section. I fell madly in love with the pictured dress and BEGGED my mother for it! She said she would put it on layaway, but I had to do pageants to wear it, and I wouldn't get any presents for my 10th birthday. I agreed, and a few months later, the dress was mine

I wore the darn thing to death, and loved every minute of it!

No pictures survive, but I vividly remember my first non-used or hand made outfit..a Christmas present from a dear aunt when I was about 11. It was a soft drapy wool full skirt in a beautiful tartan of jewel tones and a blue sweater that actually fit. I wore that skirt through high-school and even took it to college.

Wow, I love reading everyone's memories of their favourite things!
Like the others, I don't have any photos to show--they're all in storage at my parents' house.

When I was quite young (less than 10), it was a dichotomy of styles--my mom dressed me in shorts and t's, and practical things. Girly colours, but clean and practical cuts. Not a lot of ruffles and lace. For my part, I LOVED ruffles and lace. She wouldn't allow me to dress in a way that didn't fit my lifestyle.

In elementary school (in the '80s), I think I wore a dress (by choice) every day until i was in 4th grade. Shorts were still not allowed, and dresses were cooler than jeans in the hot Texas climate. There was a resurgence of dresses when I discovered Little House on the Prairie and Anne of Green Gables. This was when the floral laura ashley dresses were big. In middle school my favourite shirt was one from a musical that someone brought back for me from NY. I still like and wear concert tees (but restrict my collection to concerts I actually attended).

i don't have a picture, but when i was little i used to get hand me downs from my cousin. i remember the great "party dress" i got from her when i was around 5 or 6. it was a full dress with pleating, so when you twirled, it flared out and floated. wore it with patent leather mary janes and white frilly ankle socks.

1. 8th grade graduation: Long empire-waist dress of white dotted Swiss with puffy sleeves and vertical rows of pastel colored flowers. Pink ribbon sash.

2. Going away to college - denim skirt, jeans, vest, and blazer that I wore with a fab plaid shirt and Frye boots.

3. 1984, my going-away outfit for my first wedding. This remains my all-time fave outfit ever. Princess Diana-tastic ivory wool skirt suit with slim midi skirt and long double-breasted jacket with two oversized black buttons, worn with silky ivory blouse with tiny square "polka dots," ivory and white spectator pumps with pointy toes and square cutouts, and a broad-brimmed ivory felt hat with black velvet bow. It was matchytastic! Oh, and a corsage of red roses, of course!
