My family is multi-ethnic and multi-racial and includes several close relatives who identify as gay, including my child. My friendship group is diverse and includes people of numerous nationalities, ethnicities, and races, different sexual and gender orientations, etc. And still, to a large degree, I am insulated by white privilege. I want to learn how to be a better ally.
I would not want to be a black man living in Toronto or any other major city. I would not want to be a gay man living in my small city (I have too many friends who have been beaten up to think it is safe for young gay men here.)
I think if we all, across the world, black and white, gay and straight had access to that Smythe jacket in the correct size, the world would be a a more beautiful place. Frivolous? Maybe. But fashion can also be love.
