Thanks everyone! I appreciate your enthusiasm!
Gingko, to give a long answer to your question: I thought a lot about possible cuts, gathered a bunch of photos on Pinterest of styles that I thought would work with my hair and face shape. I actually went back through my YLF posts to review the changes in my hair over the past several years. I was thinking I would just go in for a shorter version of the cut I was wearing, i.e., go for a chin-length layered bob instead of shoulder-grazing layers. But then I realized I wasn't really excited about that change. And I noticed that I liked the photos where I was wearing my hair up, showing my face and neck. So I went back to the web and pulled more short haircuts that I liked (again, looking for ones that I could envision with my hair and face). I winnowed out some, and I showed the best ones to my stylist, pointing out aspects I especially liked or didn't. She listened, and she said, "I know something that will work," and so she didn't exactly copy any of the cuts, but she was able to translate what i was asking for into an actual haircut.
So the moral is: I think it helps not just to show a picture or two of what you are after, but to be able to say what you do and don't like about those pictures, or how those pictures are relevant to you and your hair.
