Chalk it up to global warming, but winter these days doesn’t seem to be the same, and outfitting myself for cold weather requires a strategic rethink!

When I first joined YLF a dozen years ago, I did live in a place where winter was a Big Deal, and during the coldest 2-3 weeks in January/February -40degC was not unusual. Usual daytime highs for months would be in the -20’sC/below 0F.

Winters these days (after a move/relocation) are more moderate - and getting warmer. The coldest weeks are -20degF, but most of the time daytime temps are -5 to -10. There isn’t much snow until well after Christmas, with most of it arriving in March, and gone by April. There’s no need for heavy cloth coats, monster parkas, and clompy boots.

I own some items with cold weather ratings a factor - however, my warmest puffer is rated for -17C/0F, and though they are lined, cloth (wool) coats are thinner. I can wear unlined boots (and even sneakers!) with good wool socks - and have warm feet. I do own a pair of boots rated to -25degC, but they are super lightweight, and more important with our warm winters - waterproof! Hats, gloves/mitts, and scarves still factor. I own ‘puffy pants’ but never even wore them last winter.

Does winter weather impact your wardrobe? Are you having to re-think how you dress for your cold weather season? Are you expanding or contracting your collection of outerwear? Is retail keeping up with the climate that affects your geographical area?
