Tanstaafl, I read a book by that name back in the 70s.
I adopted the name online since my favorite book is The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Heinlein. It was published in 1966. Is that the book you are thinking of?
No, the title was “Tanstaafl”. Amazon has a reprint. I read it for an ecology related class.

I might have to check that out. The Heinlein book did have rather strong libertarian themes, though I just enjoyed it for the story.
Jaileen - yes those are the hats! After the broadcast I googled and found that is their traditional culture/style - and they've used it as part of their team outfits before. I love hats (and all winter wear) but in SoCal, have a very limited window of wearability!
Tanstaafl, when I read it I knew nothing about politics. I probably wouldn’t have known a political idea if it had hit me on the head. My public library has your book. I’m going to check it out.
Binkle, here are a couple Turkish felt hats, and the one I bought there.
