Carla: Oh yes! Like you said, whippets have very fine, short hair + no undercoat and virtually no body fat, so they get cold quickly. Felix absolutely needs a thicker coat in Winter, and lighter weight ones (or a sweater) in Fall and Spring.
It's fun though, there are so many fab options out there. Not cheap though (whippets have a very deep chest, and most of the coats in brick-and-mortar pet stores don't fit properly). Now that he is fully grown, my plan is to slowly build a small capsule of coats and sweaters for him And I will enjoy it every step of the way (I know you get it;-)
LOL about Lilypup and Ranger :-)) I know several dogs who hate wearing coats/accessories. Fortunately Felix usually doesn't mind outerwear*, but I do have to take everything off the second we get back inside, then he wants to go 'au naturel' again
* the one exception is the yellow fleece sweater shown below. It has very little stretch, and the turtleneck is quite narrow. He panics when I try to pull it over his head, so that sweater has been going unworn. Will probably donate it.
I'm smiling at your description of the red tartan and puffer. Adorable!
In case you want to see Felix in his attire:
1. Yellow raincoat for milder temps
2. Felix on the left in his new olive quilted Winter coat
3. Puppy Felix in tiny red sweater that was still too big on him:-)
4. The dreaded yellow sweater that will be donated
5. Felix last year in his first Winter coat. That one's too small now, so will also be donated
