This is out of my comfort zone but I would be inclined to say a fabulous knee length dress, cheeky jacket, bling and heels.

There are several variables which need to be taken into account
Location; hip and trendy gallery or traditional powerhouse
You; body type, age and fashion persona
Attendees; how are the other guests likely to dress

I would dress to the hilt! Probably not like the oscars or anything, but I would certainly take full advantage of my role as "wife of the star" and glam it up! I'm thinking classy black dress (since you love black), sophisticated jewelry, beautiful shoes. It sounds like you tend more toward classic dressing than artsy/trendy(?)

Hmmm, then how do you feel about a classic LBD, pumps and a tad of bling? Or do you think that would be too dressed up compared to your hubby?

I would start with an LBD, knee length, either elbow-sleeve length or sleeveless. Add:

1. Microfishnets
2. Strappy high heels (metallic?)
3. A clutch (better for juggling drink and handshakes) in a bright pop of color
4. A statement necklace - something artsy
5. Bring a cheeky jacket in case you get chilly... leather, denim, BF jacket, all could work.

You could also be more daring and pick a dress in a color other than black. There will probably be a sea of women in LBDs, so why not stand out?

I would not dress up as formal as you would for a wedding. You want to hit a note a touch more casual than that, and more fun.

I like Shiny's idea of a jacket which adds both edge and a smart casual element to your look, especially if your hubby is wearing jeans. Laura 65 used the same principle a couple of months ago, she wore a knee length dress with a cropped military jacket!

I am an artist and I know from experience- anything goes. I would mostly stay in your comfort zone with the artsy look. It is really very hard to pull off without looking forced if that is not part of your style. Your husband sounds like he is fairly classic. I think great proportion and an current silhouette is the key. Sack dress and booties with gloves sounds fun. I do not know why that just came to mind. Jewelry is always helpful- I love wide cuff bracelet and a metallic clutch. Vintage is also a great way to be unique, depending on the fit and condition. I have to be careful not to look like an art school student with ill-fiitting or less than pristine vintage clothes.I have seen so many styles of dress at all kinds of openings. Some artists are surprisingly conservative. Have a great time- black is always appropriate and artistic!!
