The most fashion forward pieces I own were all bought when I was on a trip, some in NYC and some in Los Angeles. Where I live tends to have such boring clothing and shoes…Sneakers and one pair of boots below!

1. Louboutin sneakers bought in Los Angeles- I love these!

2. Dior Sneakers black and white on sale in NYC

3. &4. Same trip, Alexander MacQueen sneakers on sale

5&6. Also same trip, Alaia boots.

I had so much pent up “shopping” to do after Covid lockdown that I went crazy, but all of these get worn quite a lot! And make me feel so much more chic even if the rest of my outfit is boring…

Theodora, those are all awesome! I’m coming to steal them all.

I don't comment as frequently as you lovelies, and I **adore** your fashion-forward pieces! (And, I'd really like to see Bijou in her boots!). I've been on the hunt for cargos, but the ones I've found that fit, didn't do me any favors. Boo. I've attached a recent photo of pants I found while on my cargo hunt. I'm still getting used them, but they've been fun to wear. The more fitted hip area helps. I'm 5'9" and still need to wear heals--when I tied the ankles tighter, I didn't care for the look.

I suppose my cargo/parachute pants are the trendiest/most fashion forward items in my wardrobe. Maybe the burgundy pleather pants would also count.

I'd like a pair of wide leg (A-shape) jeans or cargo jeans with top stitching.

Theodora I LOVE your collection.

Love your shoes too, Theodora! Especially the boots!

I can't really think of anything fashion forward I own. I tend to be a late adopter.

FUN, FUN, FUN THREAD!!

Everyone's items are KILLER AMAZING, and so perfectly suited to the wearer. Love seeing these personal stamps

*happy dance*

Whoa, Theodora -- FAB footwear!

Kim, those are fun pants! They look like they have staying power, too.

When I wear any of the items in Finds below, I feel ‘current’. The silouhette of the long wool coat feels modern - especially layered over cropped pants. The pleather pants pull their weight for fashion forwardness, but you never know when influencers may declare them over. I suspect anything leather/faux leather has the potential to become classic - if the style of the individual garment isn’t too over the top.

The thrifted MMM sandals aren’t from a recent collection, but have the squared off front that is on-trend, and are one of the few ‘designer’ things I have. I feel the same way about the +J Uniqlo collaboration shirt.

The fisherman’s hat is the oldest thing I own - almost 20 yo - but I feel saucy when I wear it! The soft Uniqlo pouch bag seems to be this season’s fad - and my daily dose of ‘cool kid’ feels. I’m sure absolutely no one really notices it, LOL!

I have very few immediate needs on my shopping list at the moment - a couple of summer dresses, shorts, and jeans. I’m trying to source jeans that are both practical and current and maybe some sort of new look accessory (a hat?) I’m also looking for styling tricks where I use what I have, but combine them in ways that are more of the moment, IYKWIM.

These red shoes are dancing me forward

I love this thread! And I love ogling your fabulous finds (special appreciation for my fellow TRR fan Jonesy because I recognize the mannequin for several of her shots - why hadn't I thought of saving my finds that way!). So I am a bit stuck about my own picks - some of the most avant garde pieces I own are quite old but I like to think would fit right into a what's trending list right now. Unfortunately this is a very busy week for us - we are having lots of guests, because it would be fun to match the trends from my closet - maybe next week!

Well I don’t have any fashion forward items at all to be honest!
I am participating in some mainstream trends; and that’s about it. Wide leg pants, raw hem jeans, cropped jackets, chore jackets and shirts, an oversized blazer. Flatform sneakers.
Though I like my clothing to be playful and colourful, it’s all within the limits of what’s available at mass retail, in fairly conventional silhouettes. It takes my eye a while to adjust to new trends, so it’s probably unlikely I would go for something ahead of the zeitgeist!

It's obviously these thrifted boots I just got that are in that touted sick lavender lilac color that is supposed to be internet lilac. I wanted to get a bit of craft paint to touch up a tiny spot or two and looked at hundreds of bottles and several brands, including a hundred shades of tarrego leather polish and found nothing. If that's not in the future or the past, I don't know what is.

Vildy, i would call that colour puce. Have you tried looking for a nail polish for the touch-up? Not that it will have a meaningful name of course

Puce, now there's an old fashioned name. I had looked both online and in person and thought of nail polish and also crayon - maybe the huge box. There used to be an internet resource of precise color names you didn't know and couldn't picture.

What constitutes "fashion forward" is obviously different for all of us. I've always used it and understood it to mean something that pushes the boundaries or moves a look forward. (as opposed to something currently trending).

I no longer have clothing or accessories in that category, which I'm fine with

LJP, you've clarified what I feel as well about "fashion forward" vs trending:
"What constitutes "fashion forward" is obviously different for all of us. I've always used it and understood it to mean something that pushes the boundaries or moves a look forward. (as opposed to something currently trending)."

I enjoy pushing the boundaries. Though I've been enjoying baggier pants for a few years now, I've just purchased a pair of VERY voluminous cotton pants which feels quite forward for me. When I saw them online there was this feeling inside, "Ohh....that's what I've been looking for!". And when I put them on, it was a lot of "I love these!" and a little tiny bit of that feeling, "Can I really wear these??" Yes, I will! I think those inside feelings are what connect me to a "forward" creative sense.

I find forward is more about stretching, entering into new territory...new shapes or colors or textures...where as trendy is more following or thinking it has to adhere to a certain rule or something. Though of course it's "trending", though perhaps fringe, otherwise it wouldn't even be for sale. right? After all, I'm not sewing my own clothes .

I think of it as being style that is somehow prescient (having or showing knowledge of events before they take place), but that's hard to know, exactly, unless you have a crystal ball! For example, maybe a year ago, I was looking at street style during the RTW shows, and lots of fashion-y young people were wearing giant pants, sort of reminiscent of '90s skate fashion. I remember thinking "that's an interesting look--I cannot wear giant skater pants myself, but I'll bet these will be trending soon!" And sure enough, they are trendy and here I am wearing big pants and enjoying it. So I think those looks were technically "fashion forward." But that quite narrow definition is hard to apply to one's own self, I think? Since I cannot know if what I'm wearing that's sort of fringe-y now will become trendy soon?

LJP, I agree with you on “pushing boundaries v trendy”, this is probably why I’m confused and having difficulty identifying any fashion forward garments in my closet. In this thread I see mostly trendy items, some of mine included.

I just bought a bunch of stuff that's very on trend as 90s fashion makes my heart happy (likely because given my age that was my prime teenage years and I didn't have the $ or coolness to pull lots of it off then so want all of it now). Aside from cargo and wideleg all the things this cropped top and coordinating skirt feel very fashion forward for me. I'm accepting that I may never get back to the weight I was prior to two kids and yet for the first time ever since being a teenager am feeling fine with some exposed skin.

As far as things I'm considering these boots keep calling my name https://charlotte-stone.com/co.....rta-python

Oh Lisa those shoes are stunning . That brand has been on my radar for a few years . Doubt I’ll own any but I love it for inspiration .

I have been thinking about this and decided my pants are fashionable but not truly fashion forward. I think like Bijou I wear statements and modern pieces but I don’t think my looks are at all fashion with a capital F.

I suspect by the time I adopt a trend it’s mainstream.

Sal yes you nailed it - that's my feeling too - if I'm wearing it, it's not fashion forward haha! By my definition of course as Lisa notes may well not be others'!

Vildy, aren’t your boots what we used to call mauve? (One of the first synthetic dyes, I seem to recall)

Seller said they're mauve and they're pictured that way but a bit more
lavender/lilac in real life.

I also think that fashion forward is not just about the individual items but how you wear them/style them. I think it’s possible to wear a classic item in a fashion forward (aka original) way.

I'm echoing Rachy here.

I have things that are unusual (my Issey Miyake pleated top; my asymmedtrical Gaultier coat) and things that fashion-y and fun (my KL fingerless gloves) but I'm not sure they're "fashion forward". They're more... what would I say... unexpected.

If defining Fashion Forward can mean trendy I think my last three purchases are, at least for me. They work for my casual style. I've taken to wearing my new sling bag daily, I think I want to add the gray color, too. The sneakers and jeans add a new look to my usual tops and jackets.

I like what Brooklyn said. It is how you wear an item.
My wide-legged jeans and palazzo pants are current. I don't think of them as fashion-forward. When I bought the Jesse Kamm sailor pants in 2017, I saw them as outside trends.

My fashion pick for the trend is the 'Fringe' accent.'

It is tricky to say about 'fashion-forward'
but it's all about adding texture and details
to simple and minimalistic silhouettes in my POV.

I recently ordered a tweed skirt with fringes.
(I can't wait for my shipping!)
Every time I wear Fringe, I feel like a trendsetter.
